It's easy for those that don't and won't produce videos to pass judgement on those that do. And the dichotomy is not false....just may not be applicable to you.

I'd like to make some annotations Kimmaytube style.

Now as I'm sure you've read the definition of dichotomy centers around something being MUTUALLY exclusive meaning you MUST be in one group or ONE other group. Now I'm sure you understand why your reasoning behind THIS point is faulty. Surely you know that the ONLY options aren't LOVING Kimmaytube ( a knowledgeable natural advocate) or supporting Atteya (a relaxed head who's expertise is questionable) ? (Rhetorical question don't feel the need to answer just thought I'd point that out)
Another point of faulty logic. "If you don't produce videos you can't pass judgement" (I'm paraphrasing what I got out of what you were saying, correct me if I'm wrong)
By this logic we can't have a critical, not negative, but critical opinion of anything. Oh you think Bush was a horrible President? Well YOU have never been President so you can't say that....unless of course you think he was a good President. Oh you think The Coldest Winter was a bad book? Well you can't say that....unless of course you mean bad MEANING good! You get my drift. I can and WILL express any opinion I choose about Kimmaytube or another YT'er.

I love, love, love Kimmay!! As long as she's doing YT videos, I'll be watching. I'm sort of bias cause she's pretty much the updated version of myself when it comes to her ambition and goals in life.

She's into Graphic Design and is artistic...so am I. she loves to travel and has travelled around the globe already....I love travelling and I hope to be able to travel around the globe! She speaks in an educated, professional manner - so do I. She makes her own music and directs her own videos and web projects...so do I. She's married with a lovely home, owns her own business and enjoys what she does I'm engaged, planning on getting a home and enjoy what I do in live. Moreover she's a natural and has grown her hair to great lengths...I'm transitioning and slowly growing to great lengths.

We're also short ladies and Saggitarius signs. Now the only thing that I don't have is that beutiful small waist and MBL hair that Kimmay has! (but I'm working on that as well). She's an educated sister who takes a no nonsense approach to the things she wants and knows who she is and where she's going. In order to become the best person you can be, you need to "be about it".

I'm so thoroughly confused about what we are arguing about. Rather she is "too educated" for some tastes? That assumption is based around the EXACT SAME racial normative that you claim to attack!! I'm not even going to give that accusation a response, it doesn't deserve one in my opinion. Furthermore I haven't read any posts that BLATANTLY said disparaging remarks about Kimmay. Just OPINIONS. Criticism and disparaging remarks are VERY different. Shoot you can criticize someone you love! As I stated earlier I have been subscribed to her channel from the beginning! We go wayyyyyy back.
Also I believe someone said "the guilty will always put themselves on front street" (forgive me I can't remember your username but I know I quoted you). IMO I feel you need to please stop drawing conclusions out of thin air. I can only speak for myself but I have NEVER left a disparaging or negative comment on any of her videos. I don't even feel the need to argue with her points that I don't agree with because it's just an OPINION! She and I are entitled to them and I don't feel the need to bicker or BELITTLE her for holding a different opinion from my own. What is the point?? That tactic doesn't convert the other person to your view, in fact it turns them off, so why bother?

Maybe you don't like the fact that I don't like her tone, so I'll point out another flaw. Kimmay said "the natural hair scene [on the internet] hasn't gon anywhere for 10 years!" I COMPLETELY disagree with this and I think this points to her arrogance. You mean to tell me that natural hair has gone NOWHERE since the days of Chicoro, Nappturality, early LHCF, etc.? I think women who went natural 10 years ago would have to disagree with you. Information on natural hair care has spread like wildfire, helped in major part by "THOSE hair care forums". Maybe YOUR hair didn't thrive in those 10 years Kimmay, but others did. Sorry to tell you. (And let the cynic in me take a second to point out that Kimmay didn't start complaining about the direction of the natural hair industry UNTIL she wanted to pursue it as an ENTERPRISE. Just saying...) Furthermore the information that she presents in her channel has been around FOREVER. I suggest you do some research yourself before you go blindly following what she says. But I won't attack her for that, because she does a fantastic job a COMPILING the research of OTHERS and presenting it in a viewer friendly video for those of us who don't want to compile the research ourselves. Once again this is JUST MY OPINON and I won't attack your intellect if you don't agree with me.

Lastly, I find it quite ironic that this thread has turned into a bit of a battle because Kimmaytube did say hair forums have too much bickering. *sigh* the all knowing kimmay sarcasm alert

(Just incase someone feels I've been to negative scroll up to my other posts where I praised her. I won't continue to do so because many peole have already praised her...many of which i agree with)

ETA: Ohhhh I have a novel idea! How about we all just state why we do or don't like her! ONLY with reasons to support our opinion. NOT with baseless conjectures about someone ELSE'S opinion! ITA I get what you're saying. There will always be posters who don't understand that sometimes debating with someone who obviously has already developed their opinion about a person's charcter will not be swayed no matter what you say. Usually when I see that someone is not willing to listen, I leave them be. It just leads to anger and frustration on my part. It's not that serious to get myself worked up about. Either you can give Kimmay's vids the side eye or you love them!

Just wanted to add that, until you make YT videos, you don't know what it's like to have people just go in on your FOR NO REASON. Asking you outrageous things about your personal life, talking badly about the way you look, asking stupid questions, asking you questions that you clearly answer in the video. Telling you how you should do things... All the opinions and judgments and nastiness on YouTube can drive you crazy if you let it.

And don't for one minute have a voice devoid of dialect (and ignorance,) then you become a condescending white person. Sigh. People just want you to be who they want you to be.

I see what you are saying. But at the end of the day it's just the internet. When i make videos, in my head, I've already told myself that I will just ignore negativity. Dumb comments can be deleted and people can be blocked. If they send it to me privately well I am the only one seeing it and it can also be deleted and then blocked. People are so dumb on the internet sometimes and say the cruelest things but at the end of the day, they aren't paying my bills, clothing me, or sexing me good, SO IT DOESN'T MATTER. Hence the reason you should ignore, block,and move on. I am saying this now, and I think I will stand by it.

I've seen quite a few YT's addressing "haters" or comments and I don't want that to be me.

Okay, MY Update on Kimmay's leave-in condish recipe:

Some have already beat me to it, but I really love the way my hair feels so soft. The roots (I'm very lighty texlaxed and 16 weeks post) still feel a little rough, but still love to touch them. I guess rough isn't really what I'm feeling, but rather HIGHLY textured (lumpy, bumpy, rolly-lol) I think in the future, I'll drop the oil to maybe 1 tsp of each and see how that goes. I can't really feel the difference between soft from moisture and soft from oil. Though, when I run my hands through my hair, they have a slight sheen, but it doesn't feel sticky or really oily. I'll keep working with it for a week or two and give a final review.

BTW, how long does the concoction keep in the fridge? I still have about 1/4 left and I wasn't timid with applying it.

No. Those two things are not even close to being substitutes for each other. That's like baking a cake with salt because you ran out of sugar.

Vinegar is very acidic and drying. Aloe Vera is moisturizing and less acidic (I believe the pH is close to that of hair ~4.) If you don't have aloe juice use aloe gel or another gel with aloe high on the ingredient list... Better yet, wait until you have everything you need.

Folks are being condescending in responding to claims of kimmay's condescension. "I guess some people just don't like that she speaks proper, clear English". Yep, that's it, cuz us black folk like'ta talk like dis and our ears be bleeding at the sound of enunciated, "standard" English. Nevermind the many reasonable explanations that have been provided to the contrary; why take those into account when you can come up with your own presumptuous reason that makes it easier to dismiss others' criticism? (h/t to the op for actually asking for people to explain further rather than automatically dismissing or assuming things)There are certainly people whose dislike of kimmay is rooted in pettiness and/or insecurity but the majority of dissent hasn't been about that.

Now, I used to be a self-professed kimmay fan. I tolerated her didactic tone (which, as others have pointed out differs from the conversational, extemporaneous tone of other YTers) because I appreciated that her videos were going for an overall sensibility that was more professional and structured and that doing voice-overs would naturally lead to such a tone. However, I can understand why that tone would be enough to turn some peopIe off.

Tone aside, I had some inklings of her condescenscion/arrogance but I filed them away as "things that make you go hmmm" - isolated tidbits that could be misconstrued. In hindsight, they were part of a larger pattern - the same pattern which others have noted. I think this pattern is part of a deliberate agenda/marketing shtick. My last straw was the baking soda video. Between the overt tone and the figurative and literal subtext of the video, I made a reasoned decision to unsubscribe. (I can go into specific examples if anyone wants)

I very much appreciate the time, effort, creativity and research that go into kimmay's videos - it's not only reflected in the production value, but also orientation around "why?" and "how?" instead of "what?". Kimmay's videos stand out as unique because of their educational slant. However, she's gone beyond being descriptive to being prescriptive, and, sometimes abrasively, proscriptive. I said in a thread that I started a while back that I appreciated her approach of teaching people how to fish (the basics of hair and hair care) instead of handing them fish on a silver platter (simply listing what products she uses with little explanation of why they work). It seems like she's now started telling people that they're fishing the wrong way - even though they have a boatload of fine fish to show for it.

I know people are enamored with the novelty of her professional, educational approach but that does not mean that she's beyond reproach. Having a uniquely high production value doesn't necessarily make her any more or less arrogant/condescending. Also, a well-produced and seemingly well-researched video does not make her the final authority on hair. So while I'm sure her videos have taught viewers a lot about fundamental aspects of hair and haircare, I really hope that viewers are ultimately convicted to be more analytical, and to include kimmay's content in the range of things which require analysis. It's one thing to tolerate a particular tone, it's another thing to tolerate inacurracy.

My decision to unsubscribe and my observation that she can be arrogant does not mean that I don't appreciate her efforts, that I'm incapable of being satisfied or anything else in the litany of accusations. I haven't completely written off the idea of buying some products from luvnaturals. I guess one could argue that we buy products from entities who very well might be more arrogant than kimmay or outright "bad". The thing is, when you choose to build a brand around yourself, it's reasonable and just that consumers will take your [perceived] personailty into account of whether or not to support facets of that brand. Moreover, when one of your products is videos - in which information along with your personality, opinions, idiosyncrasies and delivery are at the forefront- than all those things will serve as a basis for people's opinion of and decision to consume said product. If she was selling curtains through an online retail store, I should hardly think that that the criticisms in this thread would be made or would matter.

This is the first I'm hearing of the "why naturals need to grow up" video. I haven't watched it yet but based on the title and reactions, I have a feeling that viewing it would erase whatever iota of regret resulted from my decision to unsubscribe and further confirm the agenda that I've noticed. I also have a feeling that she probably hits on something that has some kernel of truth, which would only make her fans more assured in their dismissal of any criticisms.

The source I looked at says pH 2.8- 3. This is a logarithmic difference. I'm sure some would argue on the scale of 1-14, it could be worse. My bottom line is these substances are completely different chemicals. Acidity and alkalinity are not the sole determinants of chemical composition. To reuse my example it's like taking one property of a compound, ie crystaline structure, and dumping 1 cup of salt in a cake. Yes, they have something similar about them, but the chemical composition is very different. ...that's just my two cents.

Back to the topic at hand, Kimmay has beautiful hair. I don't watch her for many reasons. Mostly for the reasons stated above and I think it's odd that she finds it necessary to record herself in the shower so often. (I also have the urge to say her name like Timmy for South Park...what's up with that "A" at the end.)

That was my exact reaction to the video. Most of her other hair videos have been very professional so I was quite taken aback when I saw that. I actually thought the author of the email was very conciliatory in what she wrote. Kimmay even acknowledged that after she read it, but then ended up ranting about the attitude some naturals have towards relaxed ladies. This must have been building up for some time because there didn't seem to be anything in the email that would warrant such a response.

Fascinating video. I actually subscribe to the rss feed of Ted Talks, yet somehow I missed this one. This is what I was referring to when I mentioned her "agenda/marketing shtick". I'm not using those terms to imply something especially underhanded or conniving but it's clear that she realizes that rallying her viewers around a cause (rather than just objective information or pretty headbands) makes for a much more interesting point of differentiation and, in turn, a much more compelling brand and heightened sense of consumer loyalty/passion.

In one of the first videos of hers that I watched, I remember her saying that she "didn't have time for hair boards". I didn't take issue with her comment (since I know that it's not necessarily a slight against hair board-ers and that the extent to which one is active on a hairboard is really a function of your personal workflow and how much you view the boards as a community rather than just an information resource). The tone and context of her comment did make me go "hmmmm" because there almost seemed to be a sense of contempt. This latest video has made her feelings clear. And those feelings are part of a larger agenda on her part, as noted by her statement that the natural hair community has been stagnant for the last ten years. I do agree with some elements of her observations but I don't agree with her characterization of hair boards or the larger natural community. Seems like she's trying to create controversy or indoctrinate new naturals (who probably make up a large portion of her target market) to taking her "side", which is given her accusations.
