Yup. It all depends on what i'm doing to it. if there's a comb running through it then definitely. this Is why I only do that during necessary detanglings and wash days

I always wondered about people who never get breakage but since I started to up the protein in my reggie and use the right combs to groom - I comb my hair everyday - I notice almost no breakage.

The problem for me is that some of the stuff that works really well to strengthen your hair STINKS!...

If I do any styling to my hair which involves a comb or brush for anything but smoothing on dry hair and I will get some breakage.
I rarely do so that keeps it minimal

^^^ I think that there is the key. Combing completely bone dry hair is a :nono:. I try and lubricate with oils or some water + glycerin mix to give me a little moisture.

when my hair is in natural state, I only comb when wash days also but if my hair is straighten, I barely get any broken hairs when I do comb.

Since I started adding weekly protein in my reggie, I don't have as much breakage as I once did. I get so paranoid that I check EACH strand in my comb to see if it's shed hair or breakage...and 97% of the time it's shed hair. :spinning:

Ugh...I deal with this daily. I have really thick hair and it sheds a lot so I try to detangle it daily to avoid tangles. Even though most of the hair that comes out is shed hair I find myself trying to count the broken hairs. I think it makes me paranoid because it took me so long to just get to APL and I don't think I can take another set back.

I very rarely do, but I try to manipulate as little as possible. I do think it's normal. I do have shedding though. The shedding freaks me out, but they always have bulbs.

I experience some breakage if I'm combing dry hair (or if I'm playing in it :look:)

It doesn't bother me either way. When I think about the thousands of hairs on my head in comparison to these 10-20 broken pieces, the breakage doesn't really bother me.

Maybe my viewpoint is different though. If you would've seen the massive breakage I was experiencing before my hair journey you would understand why a few broken hairs 1 or 2 times a week doesn't bother me.

As long as you are doing what you need to do to maintain your hair, I really don't see the need to fret.

I try to think this way but I have to admit it still bugs me. :wallbash:

I get breakage, but its minimal. I don't sweat it, as long as my hair continues to thrive and grow to lengths never seen before.:yep:

I only get breakage when I up my heat usage during styling. I get shedded hair for the most part during normal styling.

I hardly get breakage, there are certain periods of time when I would get no breakage for a while.
^ This state is way better than what I'm used to back when I had unhealthier practices. I really think it's the adding protein that helps. :yep:

Bone combs have decreased breakage significantly for me during grooming

Breakage is a problem especially if you wear your hair straightened most of the time. Yes breakage makes me mad too. I've been doing very well with keeping it at bay, so I'm relatively pleased.

I just did a post on the subject on my blog. Basically, every time we comb our hair, we encourage the chipping away of the cuticle layer. There was a study done where researchers were able to actually measure the amount of protein lost just from combing the hair. There are ways to protect the hair from unnecessary breakage. Lubrication is key.

ITA with the bolded. For me, oiling hair first before combing (while hair is dry), combing wet hair only in the shower with conditioner in it, and using seamless combs when combing dry hair has helped minimize my breakage tremendously.

I haven't seen breakage in the last few months because: I don't use heat as often or as high as I used to, maintain my protein/moisture balance, always use leave-ins, and always use wide-toothed combs for detangling. Oh, and I bought satin pillow cases so I don't have to wrap every night (wrapping nightly also seemed to cause breakage for me). Now, I tend to only see shed hairs in the sink when I comb, brush, or run my fingers through my hair. So I voted "Absolutely not".

Typically only when I comb on wash days. I wear my hair in twists or twistouts most of the time so there is very little breakage because I don't manipulate my hair much.

After reading these hair boards and discovering that my hair has been missing protein all my life for the first time I've been able to comb my hair and see little to no breakage. Im always shocked at this. I used to think a lot of hair coming out on the comb was normal but now i'm trying to reduce breakage as much as possible
