Sulfates dry my hair out....I only really need sulfates when i neutralize shampoo after a relaxer or for clarifying....right now i'm using up ALL of my sulfate shampoos before i buy a sulfate-free one. Or low sulfate one. I like my scalp being super clean :look:

I buy it, and I think the voting in this thread is actually more dependable than what the articles written by many different doctors who say they will or won't hurt because many of the ladies here have actually tested this by switching to ayurvedic cowashing or sulfate free and they see, feel, and believe the difference. You go back to sulfates and its like "what was I thinking???" I don't think it will kill me or give me cancer but if I can go sulfate free for around the same price which is possible then I'm going to do it yanno

I don't believe the hype. I don't have a sulfate allergy. The over all formulation of a shampoo matters more than a single ingredient. I have used sulfate shampoos that were gentle (mizani botanifying, design essentials and old formula creme of nature blue label) and I have used some sulfate free shampoos that were quite harsh (aubrey organics, burts bees and giovanni shampoos). Cowashing and castile soap irritated my scalp more than a sulfate shampoo ever has.

I'm not really sure about where I stand on this issue. I'd like to think that people in the haircare industry know what they're talking about when they say that sulfates strip the hair of its natural oils, but at the same time it makes me wonder if it's just another marketing ploy because the mess about sulfates being used to clean garage floors, well that's not convincing to me because that just means that it does what it's supposed to do. It is a detergent after all...and I'm sure that they are not using the same concentration in shampoos that they would use in a degreaser. Plus, from my own experience sulfate free shampoos have stripped my hair worse than those with sulfates. But again, I'd like to think that there may be some truth to it for it to have even gotten started...I'm just not sure what that truth is.

I have non-sulfate and sulfate shampoos. My Joico K pak shampoo has sulfates in it but it doesn't strip my hair. I think sulfate use depends on the formula.

I didn't think it was a problem until I switched it up. I do agree with milkchocolateone though. I had one non-sulfate shampoo that was extremely harsh. Once I found one that works for me, my hair feels so much better.

I still use my sulfate shampoos when I need to clarify and can tell that my hair is "harder" when I use them.

Having said this, I don't think I would issue a blanket statement that sulfates are bad for everyone.

my hair gets tangled like crazy and dries up when it even LOOKS at sulfate shampoo. however, i have a stash i MUST get rid of before i go back to ACV rinsing, which i must say is great for my hair.

No, I don't buy it. I was just logging on to post another comment about the new Keracare sulfate free because 1 day post shampoo my hair is dry, my NG is crunchy, and when I was working my prepoo mix in my hair tonight, I loop of strands came out in my fingers. I will be following up the prepoo with CON in the morning, sulfates and all, because that is what leaves my hair baby smooth and tangle free. My experience with other nonsulfates has been less than satisfying too. Cristophe was okay in my book, but it just doesn't give me the result of CON, so I'm not gonna make my hair settle for less than super slip, super soft, super shine - all of which I get with CON in the mix of my prepoo or DC regimen.

I admit i've been shampooing with garnier triple nutrition which has sodium laureth sulfate( hear lauryth isn't as drying as lauryl). I just mix in 1/4 cup of olive oil and 1/4 cup of water and it gets all the gunk out while putting moisture back into my hair at the same time. i've recently found that i need to use more shampoo as I sweat buckets and I wear a stinky helmet twice a week for horseback riding so.

I don't know about it being "hype" or what not, but what i do know is when i was using sulfates shampoo every week, my hair was completely dry. After i turned to cowashing, my hair grew like a weed and it wasn't dry anymore. Hope that helps.

Yes for me sulfates definitely dry my hair out. For the past few years I've been using a moisturizing shampoo and I thought it was moisturizing until I used a sulfate free shampoo. The difference is very noticeable for me. I will say not all sulfate free hair products are the same. I love Hair One, but I really did not like Elucence.

i have a bottle of this now and use it once in a blue. it doesn't dry my hair out like some other stuff ive used.

I only use SLS shampoo once a week when I daily bun my hair with gel. Easier for me to get all that gel out. When I am not bunning I don't use shampoo.

For me personally, yes yes and yes again. Last week I used an SLS shampoo and my hair was literally dry when I finished rolling my hair (I don't normally spray water as I go along as I find I don't need to). This week I was back on SLS free shampoo and my hair was back to it's normal condition. I have to leave the SLS alone. :nono:

The only time I had a problem with sulfate shampoos is when I didn't rinse the deep conditioner in my hair with cool/cold water. I've found that if I shampoo, DC and rinse with cold water instead of warm that changed the dryness game for me. No problems with dryness at all whatsoever. Doesn't matter what shampoo I use, I never have dryness issues when I follow this routine.

But I can't speak for anyone else.

I don't really believe it, I been around the block with shampoos, think I'll just stick with my SLS Tresemme Anti breakage shampoo. Its cheeeeeap, and doesn't overly strip my hair, I only shampoo the scalp. I tried Hair one, Giovanni shampoos, other drug store shampoos, they all had something negative about them. So i gave up and just got something that should benefit my hair as I wash. I never found something that moisturize as I clean (if that is even possible), so I just found one that I thought would result in less breakage during shampoo session.. and what do you know, it works (maybe because it has protein in it). I been using sulfates since i been born everyday, I never had a bad effect from it on other parts of my body.. maybe it just depends from person to person.
