dcing not necessary? Can someone bring some clarity

I read the article b4 on the beautybrains website and personally I don't care about it says. I feel a difference when I deep conditioned my hair then when I just use a rinse out conditioner. To each their own and I will keep on my wishful thinking.:yep:

thanks op for this post. i dont care what nobody say, i know my hair feels softer when i DC for more then 2hours, I DC for 4 hours for the fun of it, and for my peace of mind.

not to me:rolleyes: I only "deep condition" with evco and evoo because I know they penetrate...commercial products...not so much..for ME...when I used to "DC", my hair would feel amazing...for like a day....which I can get from Suave...so some would say I have't found the right DC for me...but I'm not going to try hundreds of products to get to the right one. My hair is just fine.

I know people who don't dc and their hair is fine. for ME however, its necessary. you gotta do what works for you

Dc'ing is not necessary unless you personal feel like it is. Only you know what your hair needs and the rules are not going to apply to everybody.

I co-wash quite frequently (2-4 days a week) depending on my mood/style. If I were to DC weekly, my hair would become way too soft and mushy.

I have a perfect balance that took me a looooong time to figure out. Again its what your hair needs.

The only time I do DC and find it absolutely necessary is when I do my monthly aphogee 2-step or if I were to put a color in my hair....thats its for me

I haven't DC'd in forever and my hair is fine.
It is not intentional..just lazy.
It depends on the DC i think, if you're using one that isn't really doing anything for your hair then it's probably just a waste. Like if you co-wash frequently, then I don't think a DC is that necessary, especially if the DC is meant to moisturize.
IMO, DC-ing is only beneficial to my hair if it contains protein..otherwise I don't notice a difference.

I cowash often and hadn't DCed in a while (using that article among other things to justify my laziness) and I DCed again and my hair felt so much softer and more moisturised. I know science says it's not necessary but I still do it and enjoy it.

Truthfully, we could come up with a list of 50-11 things that technically "Aren't Necessary" but oh so Beneficial.:yep:

Therefore, if it works for you (whatever those practices are, be they 'unnecessary' or not) and your hair is thriving from it.........and you are seeing fantastic results from it.....

KIM:yep:

Great comments but you ladies brought me to another question.
I know no one can tell me what to do with my hair but I'm curious I have medium thickness of hair and a sensitive scalp as a kid I NEVER had dcs and my hair did fine but do I need to dc? My hair gets dry every few days and it does feel better after I dc sometimes but sometimes I don't know. If you were me what would you do? dc or not to dc?

I Would:yep: But I love DC'ing. I love how my hair feels afterwards. And I love DC'ers. Period.:look:

I would incorporate DC'ing once a week to see how my hair feels and if it alleviates the 'dryness' you said you are experiencing.

If you are using something that could possibly create 'build up' you may want to use a clarifier to remove product build up, so you can make the most of your products and your DC'ing Session.

I tried substituting co-washing for dc'ing a while back (because I love the moisture I get from co-washing)...and after two weeks without dc'ing, my hair was furious! DC'ing is so necessary for my 4b/a thick strands :yep:

Interesting article. I'm not much of a DCer-- I do so occasionally in the steam room. But I prepoo twice a week with coconut/olive oil (and brahmi) and I believe these oil treatments are more effective and necessary than deep conditioners.

Proceeding to jack ur prepooing ritual lol but really thanks
I already prepoo with evco but I'll add my burdock & nettle oil tea blend to it and some castor oil.

DC'ing weekly has worked for me. It has given my hair moisture which helps me retain length. Regardless of what the article asserts, what is does for my hair is all that matters. ;)

I remember reading an article on the beauty brains that while not every ingredient penetrates the shaft (with heat) some ingredients DO. I remember one ingredient mentioned was centronium chloride. So I don't know much, but I know for sure a DC with heat with Silicon Mix IS producing results.

Ditto on the bolded, + amla or maka.

In think the effectiveness of a DC depends on what you're using. I personally get more out of oils that penetrate (EVOO, CO, avoc) left in for 15 mins, than a conditioner off the shelf with a fraction of penetrating oils in it, left on for an hour with heat.

I don't but, I co-wash daily.

I also do oil treatments every 10-12 days.

Adding a DC doesn't make a difference for me.

If I had a different regimen, I probably would.

i dont dc..but i do however do penetrating treatments(henna, hot oil treatments) and i co wash often.

Here's the thing. This is all arbitrary because people's hair are at different places. Comparing doesn't really work. If your hair is at a healthy place to begin with, then you may find that you don't HAVE to DC because instant conditioners are designed to just keep maintaining your levels of moisture. If you have a high level of hair health, your instant conditioners will maintain that by nourishing the cuticle and maybe even offering some sort of protection from damage. That's obviously all some people need-that minimal protection and nourishment provided by instant conditioners.

But if someone's hair is not doing as well, their hair may not respond so well to just instant conditioners. There are products that are just formulated to last longer on the strands than others or penetrate the strands, and some that can do this better with heat. That is what a DC is :imo:

oh abt the blog: no, I don't think deep conditioning is a myth

I love to dc with heat. Does wonders for my hair and helps when I have breakage. I cannot live without them. My hair loved it when I dc twice a week. I am going back to this.

I have seriously been considering doing just this also. Im tired of looking for a good DC. I might try Darcy's Botanicals Deep Moisturing mask but if that doesn't make the cut... to hell with it. Im going back to my oil DC's with evoo and evco. The only thing i might add to the mixture is Jojoba oil.

I completely agree with this. My hair LOVES oils because for some reason, they moisturize my hair like no other. Im just sayn i have tried a few DC's but none of them make my hair feel like oil does.

I used to think it was absolutely necessary for my hair, but when your hair is constantly moisturized it's not necessary anymore.

That is, if you don't use heat, harsh chemicals etc etc.

I only dc once a month after I do my cassia or amla treatments. Other than that I don't find it necessary. I mix my powders with olive oil and let if sit for an hour and dc for 15 min and that's it. I get more of a benefit using ayurvedic powders mixed with some type of oil than I do dcing.

Well I guess everyone is different but I love DCing and so does my hair :yep:.

Maybe because I heat style every week idk but for me DC with a heat cap is mandatory and part of my weekly reggie.

I don't prepoo/co-wash, nor do I regularly M&S my ends (only as needed). The DC provides all the moisture I'll need for the week until my next wash day :yep:

I also use cheap rinse out conditioners in the shower after shampooing prior to DCing<<---That method yields the best results for me.

BUT....

If I'm lazy and skip the DC that week, my hair is fine....the rinse out does it's job because my hair is healthy, I keep my ends in great condition, and I'm transitioning to natural so I haven't used a harsh chemical (like relaxer or permanent color) since August.

To each their own!!!
