This has happened on a number of occasions. The most prominent incident happened around November when I had to go to the hospital and an Ethiopian nurse asked me as I was wheeled back to my room if I was an indian (from india). I said no and asked her why-she said because of my features- eyebrows:spinning:, shape of my eyes (which are really prominent), and my hair (taken down from a rollerwrap like in my siggy & combed out.

She then asked if I was from Ethiopia or Somalia- I told her yeah just so she would get the hell out my face, but she just wouldn't stop, asking what tribe, what my name was, etc.-I was sedated so I probably started making up **** by then :lachen:but I don't remember. I often get mistaken from being from this region or west indian, north african/arab mix (even my mom says I look it, especially when I wear headwraps :rolleyes:) and sometimes indian (the weirdest incident being when this woman comes up to me speaking hindi or punjabi, like I knew what the hell she was saying). I just think I look like a regular brown/dark skinneded black girl :grin:

Mostly West Indian/Caribbean but some mixed with Indian when my hair is straightened and has jet black coloring. I also think the cheekbones and eyes have something to do with it. I hate to see the response(s) once it gets longer.

With that said, the longer my hair has become, the more black men are convinced that I'm mixed with something and its a total turnoff because its an ignorant assumption that makes my blood boil. And boy do they try their best to figure out what you're mixed with.:perplexed This might be a compliment to some ladies but not to me!:nono:

Now that I'm in OK, where there are alot of indians (Native American) people swear up and down that I have indian in my family because I'm light with ''long hair'' :rolleyes:

I went to school at the University of Miami. At the time I had golden red highlights and wore my full SL hair in a wash and go a lot. For the first two months of school I got asked by so many people what island I was from. I'm from the southside of Chicago so I would tell them "Stony Island.":lachen: (That's a big street here)
 
When I was wearing my hair curly I suddenly had a lot of people asking if I was from Egypt or Ethiopia. I met more Ethiopians than I ever had before. It's like they came from out of the woodworks. People also asked if I was Native American. I got a lot of people asking me if I was from California-- but to this day I have no idea what that meant. I've never even been to the west coast before. It was interesting, tho- because you meet and talk to more people than usual. It's kinda funny because people usually assume I am whatever nationality they are. (except white- that one was funny!)

OT: Whip Effectz- Your hair is growing out beautifully! It looks amazing!!

With my braidouts..Them Ethiopians be trying Hard to claim me. Every single day. Its gotten to the point here I stop them b4 they open they mouth.

Them:Where are u from..
me:No I'm not Ethiopian..sorry
Them: U sure
Me: umm yes I'm sure:look:
them: Maybe your father??
Me: umm sorry no, no one in my family is from Ethiopia
Them: u probably don't know

People have thought I was Nigerian several times, Indian(Indian from India), and mixed. It all depends on what style I wear.

I can't believe that. I don't know what I would do if a policemen pulled me over, because they thought I was illegal. That's crazy.

The IMO funniest were Aborigine and Samoan(both with a braidout)
In Ca I got blasian or philippina alot,here in Wy ppl think I'm Carribean or Mexican.
Some argue with me about it... you can't be German... you don't sound like Arnie:rolleyes:

Let's see... I've got spoken to in Spanish at the Dom salon a couple times & one time these two chicks were arguing about where I'm from while they were washing my hair. I think one of them thought I was Puerto Rican. Finally they asked & kept insisting I was mixed with something. My mom has told me I look Hispanic when my hair is down, plus my dad gets mistaken for one of them a LOT.

I also have gotten the usual run-of-the-mill "what's your background", "you look mixed," "is that hair all yours?" type comments. They are hilarious to me but also annoying cuz I work so hard on my hair for people to just dismiss it as a weave. This NEVER happens when I'm in a bun.

Do you have high/prominent cheekbones? It's a fairly common trait among people of West African descent (especially Nigerians and Ghanaians). Pulling your hair back emphasizes them even more I think.

I think this is an American thing. People here seem confused about other cultures. I know a latina with dark skin and hair as kinky as mine. When she tells people she's latina they look confused and say things like, "but you're dark skinned". Apparently all Latinas are supposed to look like Shakira. :rolleyes:
 
well i am biracial so that confuses ppl to begin with,, but lately i enjoy wearing my hair big and puffy and enjoy ppls curiosity .. i have literally gotten everything from,, Dominican Puerto Rican Colombian,,Brazilian to Egyptian, Moroccan, Greek, Italian, Sicilian, Iranian,Saudi Arabian simply Arab, Hungarian, Indian, Filipino, LOL, INSANE i tell you,,, although its usually Hispanic so lately Ill say "im not spanish" b4 they even ask it
 
Actually, I've been asked that most of my life, not sure why. Perhaps it's my bone structure... :look:

Anyway, when I wear braided updos (like in my fotki), braided buns and braidouts, I get a lot of questions from blacks and whites what my ethnicity is. It's something about wearing my hair in braids/plaits (I've never worn braid extentions) :scratchch. As my hair grows longer, I continue to get more of these questions, including from Asians now. I've never worn my hair straight so I don't know if that would spark any more ethnicity questions or not.

How can you tell I look Hispanic from the back of my head? I don't think I've posted face pics on here :lachen:. Nope, no hablo español which seems to piss them off even more cuz they think you're denying the culture :rolleyes:.

To be honest I think the reason why people are obssessed with this in the US is because when you don't know what somebody is (for most people not all) it makes you uncomfortable. Especially white people.

The funniest one I got was Samoan. I was like what? :lachen:
