So...I straightened my hair for my graduation () and it was so crazy humid that it poofed all out of shape :perplexed I look like a giant mushroom. I'm a half-inch away from APL, lol. It looks like I'm NL. It still looks ok but it definitely looks like I just blowdried. I did it myself with my amika iron.

However, I am going to Vegas on Sunday and I wanted straight hair, not just poofed out hair... How detrimental would it be to just DC this out and then go to a stylist to get it restraightened? I only straightened it like...yesterday. Bad idea? Or should I just get kinky twists and call it a day

I'm trying to decide, and I'm wondering if anyone else has done something like that before without their hair exploding.

I'm a natural fine haired 4b by the way.

bonus!

I say check out westndnbeauty's thread on straightening hair. From my understanding the more moisturized you hair is the less likely it is to pull moisture from the air. Try to avoid using products with glycerin high on the list.

Eta: Since you just straightened I don't know how safe it would be to do it right away. I say do some loose twist outs and braid outs.

Some people swear by sabino moisture block (I've never tried it). I love your hair in your siggy, its beautiful.

Yeah I actually was looking at her thread before I straightened. I DCed with HSR overnight before starting, and used nothing else except a superlight application of my heat protectant to get swing. No such luck

I think westndnbeauty has a looser hairtype as well as a really good fhi flat iron! I'm starting to think its the flat iron...

I straighten my hair 2 months b4 I went to the dominicans and learned humidity is a natural straighten hair enemy. Can't win against it so don't fight it just put do a twist or braid out like Nayna suggested.

IS that you in your siggy? Beautiful!!

thank you :) yes that is me after I took out pixie braids

What flatiron did you use?

amika ceramic styler

and a conair ionic blowdryer using a nozzle and denman brush for tension

yeah maybe I should just not fight it :perplexed kind of depressing. Twist/braidouts look retarded on me so I guess I should just kinky twist it up. I'm guessing its a bad idea to straighten more than once in a week :ohwell: I was hoping that if I DCed it out then I could get away with it lol

Rei; I don't think you need to worry about humidity once you get to Vegas, at least not from my experience.

You don't have to worry about humidity in vegas...it's a desert. BUT the air is EXTREMELY dry... it's the exact opposite. It's also really HOT. Make sure you do a style that will lock moisture into your hair...and make sure you DC when you return home. That dry and extreme summer heat was killer to my hair a couple of years ago!

Dang you have an Amika and it still shrunk up? What protectant did you use? I find that when I use Sabino I still get a little pouf but not as much as when I don't use it.

Yea don't straighten more than once a week... I think you'll end up doing more harm thank good.

Don't waste your money. I've been fighting my hair for 4 days and so far my hair has won. Yesterday I left the house with straight hair but came home to 1980's Diana Ross hair. Today I had to do a braided ponytail. It's just pointless. Isn't it like 100 on Vegas right now? OMG don't do it LOL maybe try putting it up in a cute ponytail

haha that was me at my graduation. I got one compliment when I walked in and as the day went on it just grew larger and larger and people around me their face went from :yep: to :perplexed to :ohwell: to :nono: lol

i just checked the weather you are right. Maybe since its dry heat it wont' be that bad? damn it :wallbash: my hair is stringently against anything that looks cute. everyone compliments me on my siggy pic, the last time I wore my hair like that I got so many ssk's I had to cut almost a damn inch off, and now it won't even straighten properly

I feel like having an intervention with it 'WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO HAIR, WHAT:rolleyes:"

I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and the weather was beautiful.

Are there any Dominican Salons in your area? I recently visited a Dominican Salon for a blow out and the results were great....still straight even in the Houston climate.

have you tried getting steam treatments it has helped me tremendously with the dry heat, but im sure its not compared to the heat and dryness in Las Vegas.

^ nah I can't find a salon that does steam here in philly and I can't afford a steamer. I just wanted to know if it was ok to flatiron, DC it out, and then flat iron it again as like...a corrective, sort of. If I DCed overnight. The consensus seems to be 'not a good idea' though

OP it took me forever to learn how to keep my hair straight
in the summer. Sabino is a good product but I still think it's about trial and error. When I was in Vegas my hair didn't poof at all it did the exact oppisite, it was flat to my head. The air is so dry...have fun and congrats!

Thank you for this post, Chelz! I wanted to blowdry and curl my hair for a bday party this weekend, but was not looking forward to it due to the humidity. Well I didn't see the Weather Works, but I did see the Frizz Eaze spray, and it worked wonders. My hair didn't puff out as it normally does, even though I'm relaxed. It stayed sleek and straight. Here it is Monday, and my hair is still sleek and I'm able to pull it back. This was a great find!
