No matter what your curl pattern is, I think most of us have had trail and error when it comes to styling. My hair is 3c in the front and 4a in the back and a casual, willy-nilly wash-n-go does't work well without some effort, the right products and technique. You can watch videos, etc, but the only way to learn is practice. Learn your hair texture, density, and porosity for the right products to use which will make styling easier. HTH

Your twist-outs, braid-outs come out wack? What is your technique? I feel like twist -outs and braid -outs look lovely on ANY texture of hair, from type 1 through type 4. Actual twists and actual braids worn as a style are a different story though. I have a friend who has a looser and finer texture than mine (4b), and her twists and 'fro'-styles look a hot mess (she knows this ). This girl is in envy of my hair texture, gushes about it, so i can definitely understand why you may be in envy of it too if you like to do certain styles.

I agree with you that finding someone with your hair texture to get advice/inspiration from is the best bet.

We are >>>here<<<<. I can tell you that I completely understand your story. And my hair looked a lot like yours at that length. My WnGs are a big fail - no curls, only frizzy waves. Twists don't stay in my hair but I've learned to do twist n curls (ala Curly Nikki) and the key is the roller/straw at the end with some kind of holding product to keep my twists from unraveling. And I can't do TnC overnight. Mine looks best if done fresh in the morning, allowed to airdry during my commute, and taken out while kind of damp.

Unfortunately, I'm not a hair guru by any stretch of the imagination and with my 2 little girls, I have little time for fancy hairdos. I've survived off of buns and updos and an occasional blow out for fun. That said, feel free to PM me if you need to talk about products and/or techniques.

Imo there is somewhat of a need to know your hair type. It helps when your in search of products and styling advice from people who say they have a similar hair texture. Not everyone on here has a picture for you to go by, just a siggy that says their hair type.

My mum used to henna my hair, and brush it out. And she didn't really care about blunt cuts Throughout my teens I ruined my hair with relaxers, too many splits-ends, and damaged it with heat.

@jennboo - I don't have a technique, and perhaps that's what I'm lacking. Thanks for pointing that out to me. YES... I SO BADLY WANT A HOT TWIST-OUT. I see so many hot styles I want to do and my hair isn't holding it well. But I think you may be right about the technique thing, and will defo look into that.

As someone mentioned earlier, in addition to knowing hair type it's good to know your porosity and density. Your hair looks a lot thicker than mine but I'm with you on the WnGs. I can only do those, buns and straight styles. I even revisited my Caruso's this morning and me and DH were cracking up! Caruso's frizz my hair because of the steam! I am royally screwed when it comes to styles! I know when my hair gets longer, my WnGs will look really good because I don't have a lot of shrinkage. Feel free to PM me as well with questions about products. I'm finally learning what my fine, thin, low porosity, 3abc hair needs and loves

Have you tried using a different browser? When I use IE, there are a ton of features I can't see or use on various websites. When I switched to Google Chrome, everything works like it should.

I tried twist outs the other day and wanted to cry.

I know some people get inspired by watching hair gurus even if they are not a similar hairtype but I get frustrated when I see someone do something I can't do. That's why I want to figure out my hairtype and start watching those tutorials. I'm getting tired of wash and gos. Surely there must be other styles for us

I totally understand this feeling! Although I have even had that happen with people who have similar hair types. For example one popular YT lady has hair the same hair type as mine but not the same density so her styles would never come out right on me. Now I usually look for those that have similar curl pattern and density. This helps me out greatly because there is so much ambiguity and discrepancies over the hair typing that you can go around in circles on that at times.

Just type in hair type 3 and you should be able to find some ladies with similar hair on YT.

I think it's difficult to type our hair based on childhood pictures. My childhood hair was alway in Afro puffs. Because it was the 70-80s we didn't care about curl definition. When I look at my childhood pictures my hair was brushed smooth into bushy ponytails. I didn't know I had curls until I found gel and activator on high school. And then I didn't want anyone to think I had a curl.

The picture of your hair when you were younger looks like your hair was combed out. It's probably still 3B. I bet if your mom had washed your hair and let it shrink up, it would look like the pictures in your initial post.

I don't see why you're making it a point to make your hair "nappier" than it really is. 3B... 3B/C... same thing really. Does adding the "C" on there make you feel some kinda way of trying to belong to the "nappy heads" or something? I don't know, I just don't get why you even asked if you have you're mind set on what you want your hair to be. erplexed

^Agreed. at people being so shocked that someone with type 3 hair could possibly want hair that's a bit kinkier. Perish the thought. Because for all the pontificating about why this thread was created in the first place, that mentality is what's really underlying some of the posts in this thread.

Anyway, I agree that it's 3B and that it's loverly.

For what it's worth, although I think that the hair typing system is fundamentally flawed, I'm in the camp that says that it's nonetheless useful to have some way of placing yourself on the hair type spectrum. I'm one of the people that learns the most about different hair styles, techniques, and what-not by looking up the routines of those whose hair is most similar to mine in appearance, so I can understand the OP's rationale behind this thread.
