Wow, Girl! How'd you break your hair off so fast?

I rememeber when i was in highschool using a curling iron on my hair
and even on high my hair didn't curl. I never thought uhoh I have damaged my hair, oh no what I thought was oh ok I just gotta hold the iron on longer.
So I would insanely repeat this process on the same strand of hair over and over and over and over, until finally the end bumped under a little bit.

Lawd I am lucky all my hair didn't just set on fire and run out the room

Here's my claim to fame in the broken hair department:
* hot combing every time I sweated my hair out in the summer-which was every day!
* using jam gel every time I wore my hair up
* sponge rollers overnite without end papers
* never ever tying my hair up at nite
*shampooing infrequently
...and on and on. Now that I think about it, I'm surprised I had any hair left to work with. :ohwell:
THANK GOD I FOUND YOU, LHCF!

For me I never DC’d. I conditioned 15 minutes max.

Also, never applying a moisturizer. Especially when wearing my hair in a wrap because I was afraid of it being weighed down.

going too long w/o combing my hair and then using a small tooth comb and yanking at my head lik I was a nappy headed black barbie

getting those blond highlights thinkin I was being cute:wallbash: to this day my mom is lik "i told yo *** not to get them damn highlights but NOOOOOO u jus had to have ur way" LOL I was middle school wat do u want from me lady

:lachen: You are hilarious. Adolescence :nono:

ME TOO!! UGH i forgot thesse!!

oh the heeeeeeeeat.

For a while I would roll my ends on rollers everynight with a scarf, but then I discovered flat irons and all h*ll broke loose. :nono:

When I re-relaxed a few years ago I had just turned 21 so I started going out. I would restraighten/bump my hair 2 or 3 times a day - I used heat protectant or "straightening mist" and I would spray then clamp my hair in the flat iron immediately b/c I wanted to hear it "sizzle"

I would get hair caught in the flat iron or curling iron edges and by the time I finished styling there would be long broken off strands tangled around the hinges and stuck beneath the plates.

I also contantly used conditioners made for 'dry, damaged' hair. Never realizing that they were full of protein, and the dryness/breakage in my hair wasn't being helped with protein overload.

never really moisturizing, sleeping w/ it out and while. dry detangling sessions and yanking the comb through. not using a wide tooth comb. i was a mess.

I did a lot wrong before the knowledge...
Relaxing every 4 weeks
Lots and lots of heat
combing and brushing dry throughout the length of my hair
No deep conditioning
washing once every 2 weeks
being rough with my hair
only moisturizing maybe 2 a week
lathering up my hair with shampoo and scratching my scalp as I washed then rubbing aggresively with a towel afterwards
i'm sure I could go on and on but i'm sure you get the idea, lol

GURL ME TOO!!!:wallbash: NOW WE KNOW BETTER:grin:

Where to begin?

  • Getting relaxers every 6-8 weeks.
  • Only DCing on relaxer day and sometimes not even then (I probably DC'd on 2 out of 3 relaxer days).
  • Allowing my hair to be bonelaxed. Not bc I wanted it to be that straight, but bc I wouldn't protest when the hairdresser would insist on leaving it on extra long. When I would tell her it was burning/tingling, she would spray something on my hair.:perplexed
  • Not paying attention to my hair's protein/moisture balance.
  • Never moisturizing. - I wouldn't let the hairdresser put moisturizer on my hair, lest it interfere with my swang. The only product that I put on my hair on a regular basis was Chi Silk Infusion or Biosilk.
  • Using the flat iron/curling iron almost every day, often without heat protectant.
  • Not covering my hair at night.
  • Handling my hair too roughly - i.e. excessive combing with a fine tooth comb everyday. I would comb my hair up to 8x a day at work.
  • When I did my own wash n sets - not washing my hair properly, not detangling properly, and overusing heat - rollersetting, then blow drying, then flat ironing, then curling.

I could go on, but I think you get the idea. Basically abusing my hair and not putting in the research, time and care that I afford other things in my life.

My hair was so thick, long (SL) and beautiful from wearing braids for a year while I was pregnant.
So when I finally took them out,
I washed and blowdried and ironed my hair every day. (To keep my swang)
At the same time I was relaxing every 4 weeks and highlighting my hair with bleach.

It only took 3 months and it was over for my hair. That's when I found the forums, trying to get it back.

- Washing hair loose along with improper detangling and removal of shed hair :nono:
- Not moisturizing :nono:

I have had knots from washing and going.....i would always detangle, but a day or so later I had fat knots galore. I have heard that is an indication that my ends need to be trimmed. Combing under the pressure of the water from my shower head has helped tons with this.

I am guilty of overlapping when relaxing too

But the award for my biggest amount of breakage goes to .......*drum roll* ....Wearing heavy braids, feeling the pain/burn on my scalp from the weight of the braid weave, and doing nothing about it beacuse I thought the sensation would go away sooner rather than later.....I went from having thick hair to having thin see through hair in all of ONE month. It has been maybe six years. I have cut it all off to start from scratch more than once since. However, I have had zero luck in regaining my thickness. So everytime a hair breaks it causes great anxiety because I know I don't have much to spare.

Relaxing too often.
Not using moisturizer and just piling on the grease!
Hot Irons every day!!! It took a good brainwashing to rid myself of this habit.
Brushing hair when wet.

Using Volumizing Mousse which contained Alcohol.

Using direct heat.

Not moisturizing properly.

Allowing stylists to massacre my hair.

Improper use of hair gel (to this day, I won't put gel in my hair, not even aloe vera gel)

Using wrap foam that had alcohol in it

Perpetual bun wearer that was pulled too tight

Attempting my own relaxer once

Tying my wrap cap too tightly

Using the wrong moisturizer

Washing it (may sound disgusting, but every shampoo I have ever used when I had a relaxer caused my hair to dry out severely for several days)

Not enough DCing/Hot oil treatments.

slapping sophee hair grease & lets jam on my hair. Then Curling my hair with Golden Hot curlers until my hair sizzled.I thought the sizzle meant that the curling iron was getting the KINKS out real good..funny thing is:I didnt even have kinks..cuz i was bone laxed :/:?

Great topic, Ocolove!
- I used to rely 100% on stylists because I got lazy and didn't want to do my own hair anymore
- I would never protect my hair at night
- My hairdressers would overlap relaxers
- Using relaxers that were too strong
- Not moisturing whenever my hair felt dry and brittle
- Dying my hair without following directions LOL
- Letting some hick GLUE on a weave and then to make it worse, I bought the wrong hair and couldn't detangle it!
- Using too much heat
- "Moisturizing" with Super Gro! LOL

It's a miracle I am not bald!

My Ten Deadly Hair Sins...

  1. Way too much heat - blowdry every 2 or 3 days and flat/curling iron every day
  2. No moisture - never conceived of moisturizing...does B&B Supergro count
  3. No oils - never thought to seal my hair with oil
  4. Not enough protein -
  5. Inconsistent HOTS - maybe once a month
  6. Inconsistent DCs - maybe every six weeks
  7. Relaxed way too often - every 4 weeks like clockwork
  8. Smoothing the relaxer from root to tip for decades
  9. No heat protectant
  10. Cutting my hair too often - basically when I got bored

....oh lord, where to start.

- Relaxing root to tip.
- Only using pink oil and vaseline on my hair.
- Shampooing only once every two weeks.
- Never deep conditioning.
- Only letting regular conditioner sit for a minute before washing it out.
- Never covering my hair at night, and sleeping on cotton pillowcases.
- Curling my ends daily with a curling iron turned up to High.
- Using blue magic grease to "protect" my hair while curling it with aforementioned iron.
- Overprocessing my hair on purpose, to get it "extra straight".
- Blow drying my hair, while it was already dry.

I could go on, but I'm too ashamed. Oh, the evil things I've done..:nono:

2 inch trims every 2-3 months (not breakage, but definitely kept my hair from getting longer)

presses every 3 weeks @ the salon (included going under the dryer for 45 minutes, then using an extremely hot blow dryer to dry hair w/o a heat protectant, and then using a flat iron to straighten, and then straightening and curling the ends with a flat iron).

not wrapping my hair, or deep conditioning, no oil treatments

I dyed my hair a light light brown/orange-like color...but the process was bad..I got it done at the salon, but the first time it didn't get light enough, so about 4 weeks later she dyed it again and this time it took...but my hair broke off later. (I realli liked the color, but I am afraid to dye my hair again)

Cleaning up new growth way to much! I freeform now.

Using thick creamy conditioner. Way to much product buildup. I use rosemary tea and castor oil now.

1. I did not not how to truly moisturize my hair...I thought hair grease was all I needed.
2. Overlapping perms
3. I would wrap my hair everynight but after so many weeks after my perm this is not the best way to manage shedding for me. I still tie it up at night just without wrapping.
4. Using a polyester scarf and not silk. Silk (not satin) is best for my dry hair.
5. Using shampoo the wrong way....shampoo the scalp condition the hair.
6. Combing my hair too often. Now I barely comb at all.
7. Using a rat tail comb to comb through my wet hair on wash day

And now the BIG BIG BIG one**********
8. Hot curling everyday:nono2:

Back in high school when I was using a curling iron every single day. I used Pink Oil moisturizer as a heat protectant/moisturizer. On top of that I would go months between shampoos and deep conditioning treatments. My hair broke off soo quickly. I eventually had to cut my hair to ear/chin length.

Constant Combing & Brushing
Tight Braids
Tight Ponytails
No moisturizer, nothing.
Greasing my scalp daily.

*I used to relax every 2wks. I know...Im so ashamed to even say that! that was back in high school before I registered with LHCF
*never never never ever moisturizing my hair.
*thinking lusters pink oil was the end all be all for hair care
*when I blow dried or flat ironed my hair, I never used heat protectant. (and to think I wondered why my hair broke off)
*getting braids in my hair and keeping them in for months...and months.

thank GOD for LHCF!

- No deep conditioning
- Weave glue
- Playing with it so much that it broke at the demarcation point (still struggling with this issue every single day)
- Petrolatum based products
