Will cotton scarves damage my hair?

I usually buy satin durags and stuff but I accidently brought this cotton womens durag because it was really cute but I didn't realize it was cotton until i got home. Should I take it back (it's a really cute design)? Or will cotton scarves suck the moisture out of my hair?

It depends...are you leaving it on overnight? if its for a few hours I'd say nayyy, but longer...

Maybe try and put a silker scarf underneath...just an idea

I actually liked cotton scarves when I used them. Once they get a lil oily from using them everynight, they actually seemed to remoisturise my hair after using them.

I wouldn't wear it right next to my hair.

It can rub against your hair and cause traction alopecia. If you wear it while you sleep it will suck all the moisture out of your hair. I used to wear a cotton scarf for a few hours while I air-dried because it helped my hair dry faster. Until Caramela and Pebbles put the fear of the shroud into me.

Now I wear the cotton scarf on top of the satin or silk scarf and it works exactly the same.

I don't believe a cotton scarf will damage your hair as long as you keep the hair under the scarf immobile while you're wearing it. (I think satin-scarf wearers should follow the same rule)

I knew a girl who wore a cotton scarf at night but was still able to grow her hair very long (waist length)

[/ QUOTE ]I was thinking that. That's good because I don't really want to take it back. and i don't plan on wearing it at night. Just during the day time. Thanks ladies

A cotton scarf is like sleeping on a cotton pillow.

yes maam!

I would strongly advise against using a cotton scarf on the hair for protection at night. Although it might not cause friction damage, it will suck all the moisture and life out of your hair. Satin scarves are a much better option in my opinion. They are going to help your hair retain moisture as well as encourage the cuticle to lie flat and smooth the hair. To each his own, but you won't catch me trusting my length to a cotton scarf!!!

I have to agree with those that say "avoid it"...cotton can grab your hair easier than satin...

Also (I learned this next bit of advice from experience) find a silk or satin scarf to wear over your wool collar on your coat...I lost a upside down "V" shape of about 5 inches because I was determined to wear my permed hair down...and my coat...ATE IT UP!!!!

Perms and wool, cotton, ANYTHING THAT GRABS...dont mix.

Dang! that's enuff to scare me. That's alot of hair lost!

I always think my very fine hair is more susceptible to damage because it is fine and thin but I'm starting to see that my hair actually can take abuse that other folks hair can't seem to take. It seems like my hair thrives from all the bad stuff. Brushing, cotton scarves, little conditioning, maybe even a little grease. I even kept length wearing a wool peacoat every single day. I guess my point is, don't listen to me, the stuff I do seems to make other folks hair fall out

I think it will be fine if you wear it occasionally, but not overnight (cotton dries hair out, so extended use would be detrimental).
