Why is my hair resisting haircolor???

Now that I have achieved/maintained phenomenal length (btw: thanks everyone, for 2 years of advice), I would love to accent it with a lighter shade. In the last 2 months, I've tried 2xs to lighten my naturally dark brown hair to an auburn, with no success. I'll get that shine & silkiness, but literally no color. I'm unwilling to leave the color mixture on longer than the recommended 20 minutes for my relaxed hair (African Pride/no lye). Is it possible that my hair is resistant to coloring?? I'd appreciate advice from the color experts on the board. Thanks so much!

OMG, the same thing happened to me when I dyed my hair Sunday. I used the new one from Cream Of Nature (I forgot the exact name) and it just looks like I have a red rinse in my hair. No, it doesn't even look like that because you can only tell it has some color in it when I'm in the light. It looks like a red glow, like an alien or something.

Dark hair is hard to lighten.

First, you should be choosing a color in the same color family as the shade you want but one or two shades LIGHTER than you want it when your hair resists color.

Second, you need to be using a permanent color to lighten. African Pride doesn't have a permanent color to my knowledge, but if they do and I'm wrong you let me know. I'm also confused because you mentioned no lye...which pertains to relaxers not color...

Third - it is possible that your hair is resistant. Dark hair is harder to lighten and if your hair is healthy and strong the cuticle may resist opening (which for all other purposes is a good thing

) and letting the color inside the cortex... When you hair is resistant you have two options...

1. you could use a booster - but these ordinarily only come with blonds and if you don't want blond I wouldn't use it because it basically makes the hair FLY past the normal shades of red it'd go through on it's way up the scale of shades. I also have no idea how you approximate a booster when it doesn't come in the box of color. Karonica might know by now....

2. You could apply some heat. Apply the color to everywhere BUT THE ROOTS and cover it with a plastic cap and sit under a warm dryer for most of the processing time (15 of 20 minutes let's say?) and then apply the color to your roots for the last five minutes. Why? The heat from your scalp will cause the color to process at lightening speed and you may not want color there while you're under a dryer. Then you get what Shamboosie calls "hot roots" - roots that are WAY lighter than your hair. Not cute...

Rayne - did you use the permie CON color? They have a permie and a semi if I'm not mistaken.

Tracy, thanks for answering!! Your haircolor is my inspiration (not to be too fanatical, but your album is saved on my desktop, love your results!!) Actually, the relaxer that I have is African Pride/no-lye, sorry for the confusion. And your right, blonde is a bit lighter than I'd like to go. And agaub, you are right, maybe I should try in a couple of weeks with heat. Now that I think about it, I've seen on tv where they use aluminum foil, do you think that alone would generate enough heat for "my" hair?? Also, thats an excellent point, about my hair being "too" healthy, I never would have considered that. Man, just my luck, to win and lose at the same time.

No problem Kymelle - I have a few of our members' lovely albums and inpirations saved in my favorites too!

I'm flattered actually.

Just wanted to add- wait a while on the retry, even though you can't see it, your hair did process even if it didn't lift...

Condition it well with protein and moisture and wait at least until 4 or so weeks after your next touch up to try again...

also - I don't think foil alone will generate enough heat. I think if you're going to add heat you should add it. You can put the foil on first though - that's how I FINALLY got my hair to lift when I first colored it in '02.

I used the Cream of Nature Colors permanent hair color in Bronzed Copper or something like that.

My hair was already dark-medium brown from previous dye jobs. So it should have come out a lot lighter. I've been dying my hair (myself) since I was a teen and this is only the second time that the color didn't take. The first time was right after I had my baby. Lawd knows that is not the case now!!! At first I thought it was because my hair wasn't taking to chemicals. But after being underprocessed for a year, I did a successful corrective relaxer so I don't think that's it. I also thought about the cuticles not opening, but although my hair is healthy it's not THAT healthy, at least I don't think it is.

I'm going to wait a few weeks and try again with a different brand.

If that doesn't work, get yourself a bottle of mix Clairol, take it to the salon, and have them add a booster with the mix.

(And then ask them what's a booster, what are the ingredients, and where do they sell it)

LOL @ Karonica. I thought you only needed a booster if you were using a very light color, like blonde. Can you use them for browns and reds?

Sorry. I meant "Miss Clairol." Dag, how did I butcher that sentence like that?

If your hair won't lift without them, most likely so.

I have a high brown/auburnish color, sorta between #27 and #30. But, you have to watch the hair carefully with the booster, because it gets light pretty quickly, and you don't want to go pass your desired color.

This is getting a little too deep for me. I think I'll wait and treat myself to a professional coloring. I don't want to undo my progress!!
