What do you respond to a 11 year old white boy when he asks, "Why do you have fake hair on your head?" in public. That was a recent experience (when I had braids). Now how do you respond to the crowd that's now looking at you?
Tell him for the same reason people wear earrings or scarves, or bracelets, or necklaces, or any other accessory! When you wear braids it's a fashion accesory, AND a beautiful expression of your cultural heritage........period!
Jeez. Some people can be so rude.
I remember once my friend and I were in our residence's cafeteria and a worker(white) was like why are you flipping your hair like it's yours?(She wore braids)
My friend responded well tho.She was like "It is mine.I bought it!"
That shut him up.

Wow, he's not very service oriented. I wonder why is it that people feel so entitled to be all up in your business.
I would have told him something similar to what I told the teenaged daughter of a friend who asked me, "Why did you stop putting a perm in your nappy head?"
I answered, "For the same reason you're wearing that ugly shirt. I wanted to."

Maybe if he were a toddler or a pre-schooler. This boy was 11--he was trying to embarrass her. I can't chokeslam him, so I would definitely get smart with him.
I like cocoacure's answer. You guys are forgetting its a lil boy, therefore you dont wanna add to his ignorance. Realize one he's white so he's obviously ignorant to the culture. I dont see anything wrong with the LIL BOY being inquisitive. Be intelligent with your answer, teach him a thing or 2 about culture
Nah he wanted to embarass her, whites who are ignorant wouldn't know that tit was fake hair. This little boy knew and wanted to make fun of you and be a smart ass. So I would have had a smart ass comment back.
I would have said because I want to. Then if he said something else and it sounded like he was really trying to get smart then I would say something to let him know what he's doing isn't cute.
Oh wait let me clarify. I read in an etiquette book that this was the best response to a rude or inappropriate question. If you think about it when you ask someone "why do you ask?" it kinda signals them out. Obviously the little boy was trying to be hurtful, if you had said anything mean back to him, it wouldn't have made you any better than him.
