For those of you who do relaxers yourself, what do you use to base the scalp? Vaseline? Hair oil?

I do my own relaxers. I refuse to go to salons for various reasons--one being I don't like waiting when I have an appointment.

When I relax I use a product made specially as relaxer base. I know it has petrolatum and menthol and made sure I cover my ENTIRE scalp, ears and hairline.

I do my own relaxers. I use Affirm Control Formula, which is made for slower stylist. It is perfect for me, since I am not as fast as professional stylists. Since I switched to Affirm Control Formula and changed my application process, I get literally no breakage during the relaxing process. At first I thought that something was wrong, because i am so accustomed to seeing hair in the sink. I thought that maybe I wasn't washing it out correctely or something but that wasn't the case and I am definately not complaining. I am still perfecting my application process, however, through tips from you ladies!!! Thanx for all of your great posts:D!!!!!

I do my own, it started to get too expensive to get my 2 daughters and my hair done. Well, my stylist would only do the 10yr old 2x a year. Anyway for years I've either done it myself or went to the salon and out of the two I've self relaxed myself more.
Southie20, I gotta find that Affirm Control.I've never heard of it. I use Affirm Mild w/lye. Where you find yours?

I've Done It Myself Before,But I Let My Sister Do It Now.She Does A Really Great Job And All,But I've Gotten Lazy And Really Need To Start Doing It Again Myself :lol:Salons Are Too Expensive And Too Risky And I Haven't Been To One To Get A Relaxer Done In A Looooong Time

I do my own, although I need to get better and find the best relaxer for my hair :)

My momma has done the best job ever though, even better than the stylists I used to go to

I usually do it my self, sometimes I'll get my friend to help me out. It does add a nice pampered feeling with extra help :)

I do my own relaxers, I have been since I graduated from beauty school in '95. Yes I am a licensed cosmotologist, but I have been out of practice for about 7 years. I worked in a salon for about 3 months and said "this is not for me", walked out and never looked back. I don't trust alot of sytlist just because of what I experienced in beauty school. The students would mess up clients hair for no reason at all and at that point I decided I wouldn't go back to a beauty salon/stylist.

This is my 2nd time being a relaxed head, and I've been doing my own since the virgin relaxer. It'd feel weird to have someone doing it for me. Too much anxiety, so I haven't yet. But I am thinking of letting an LHCF stylist do it once it gets longer...

I do my own texturizer. When I was relaxed my stylist would do my hair biweekly. I bc'd so I could learn about my natural hair and give up my addiction to my rip off hella stylist.

Im am to chicken sh#t to do it myself:lol: I only let one lady style my hair and I have to fly to get to her. Oh well. She is gentle and takes her time. One of these days I might learn.

I relaxed my hair for almost 10 years but I went to a salon for the last 2 0 3 touch ups. I think I can do it again but I am just too lazy:)

I go to a salon because I'm too scared of over/underprocessing and being too slow with the application.

I have considered practicing with conditioner and purchasing the 360 degree mirror mentioned in the other thread. :scratchch

I quit self relaxing because I am too slow and inevitably overprocessed the back and underprocessed the front and middle. The $70 spent every six months at the salon is well worth it for me because my stylist is wonderful and I am worry free in her shop. ;)

I go to the salon. Always have except for when I was at college and had a friend do it.
