I always though winter was the harshest on hair but I realize summer is just as bad too. I know some folks get the summer growth spurt, but for me when it gets really hot, my hair gets VERY dry, plus the salt in the sweat is drying to the hair also.

So which season is hardest on your hair?

Winter's hardest on my hair.
I get the summer growth spurt, (spring/summer) and my hair is just moisturized, naturally.

winter-with all the superheated air, and lots of times the toques and winter hats rubbing my hair... it's just a recipe for breakage....

I also get bored of my hair in the winter, and start trying new things... like more wash n gos in the middle of january...:nono: ...breakage....

Winter! I'm one of the people who gets the summer growth spurt. :yep: I also tend to stick to eating more healthfully in the summer. Additionally, while I still moisturize and protect my ends during the summer months, I don't have to worry about them accidentally touching wool collars and those types of materials like I do in the winter.

just going off this summer and this past winter...definitely winter, but that is because i didnt have LHCF to guide me. my hair was short cause i was forced to cut it in october, but i bought and wore some really cute hats more under the advice of my mother, who didnt want me to get sick, but they were not lined! this is the summer of the WNG and kinky twists for me, so my hair stays moisturized and my ends are protected. i even foresee this coming winter being difficult because i have told myself once i get past APL i will be wearing my hair straightened and down more...but at least i know to line my hats with satin now!

As far as protecting my ends, winter is definitely a tough time. But my hair gets soooo dry during the summer. I've been co-washing almost every other day this summer.

Exactly, I'm using more products in this heat than I should be because of this freaking heat, sweat and then dryness. Yes, the hair is growing but I don't like having to handle it so much

For me, winter has been the season of breakage. Wool scarves... zippers... arctic winds sucking moisture away. Heaters set on Africa... hair murder.

Something that really has helped my hair during winter may be offensive to those who frequent the Fashion Board, but it works!

I wear a silk scarf tied in a babushka style whenever I leave the house. Even if I wear a hood, I still put my babushka on. Not only do I stay way warmer than I otherwise would, my hair thanks me. When I get into a store or wherever I'm going, I just slide the scarf backwards down off my hair. Before I leave, I put it back on my hair.

People might think I look funny, but I don't care. I've gone from a TWA to APL in less than 2 years, and I don't think that's anything to laugh at.

Yes I feel like I need to wash my hair more often. But I only wash once a week because I have hard water at home, and it makes my hair very hard. Especially in this 90+ degree wether we're having.

Too bad I only get the growth spurt when I got to Florida. Something about miami makes the growth shot out my head but once I'm back in NY, it's back to 1/4 an inch a month.

This is me exactly!! In warmer months I can keep my hair in a style for at least a week. When it's winter, it seems like I want a new hairdo everyday. Also, winter wash n nos are horrible for my hair/health (i guess possibilities of sickness should stop me)

Same here. If it were winter where I'm from - Southern California - then it would be no problem. But winter in Chicago? And winter is loooooong here. Summer is humid and my hair feels great pretty much all the time with me hardly trying.

Winter, definitely. It's cold, and dry. In the summer, at least I have to humidity working for me, plus I get the summer spurt.

:lachen:

Heaters set on Africa ... now THAT is funny!

And yes, I totally agree. Hair care gets challenging during the winter for me too.

I say summer because, in the winter, I really get to care for my hair. Hiding it under hats and stuff. Whereas in the summer its like my hair ALWAYS has to be on point.

I'd say winter too. Not only because of the cold weather, but it messes up my cowashing routine (which I pretty much do almost daily)completely because it's just not feasible to go out with wet hair. Also in the summer there's lot's of rain and humidity (I'm on the east coast) it's like free steam treatments after I cowash!

Summer

humidity.... being in and out of air conditioning .... sun damage

I do my hair much more often because it doesn't last in the summer heat.

My hair loves the Winter/cooler months - something I am used to from the UK.

In the Summer, even though I get a growth spurt, I sweat more in my hair and the heat dries out my hair.

ETA: At the time I wrote the above, I was transitioning. Winter just gone found my hair extremely dry due to the vast drop in temperature.

I've come to the conclusion that my hair loves Spring and Autumn but not the extreme weather in Winter and Summer.

I said neither because I live in Floirda and almost never wear a hat in the winter. Come to think of it, I wear more hats in the summer to protect from the heat. I should have voted that summer is harder on my hair.

Great idea!!

I'm gonna go with winter. Summers are very humid in my area so summer is ok for me.

Winter is cold, dry, and just generally unkind to my hair. I have to take extra special care then.

I am new here, BTW, and I love reading what you ladies have to say!

For me, winter is the harshest. My hair gets soooooooooooo dry and it seems like I can never keep it moisturized enough. I try not to wear too many tight fitting hats or caps because I used to do that in high school and it would break my hair off everywhere!!!

It's going to sound really weird for me to say winter is harsh on my hair ('cause I live in Florida:sunshine:), but it's the truth. Even though it doesn't get super-cold down here, it gets cold and I notice that my growth rate is slower in winter than it is in the summer, and also my hair tends to be a lot drier during the winter months. It seemed like I had to co-wash practically every other day to keep my NG from matting up when it was colder. Now that it's summer I notice my hair is behaving a lot more nicely, and also it's growing a lot faster. I had a significant amount of NG just one month post relaxer as opposed to the two months it takes during the colder weather.

I haven't noticed a difference in my growth or length retention but I voted for winter. Because its so hard for me to wear my hair down in the winter because there is always something that my ends rub on like, sweaters, wool coats or scarfs. Those are really drying on my ends, so keeping my hair up is a must.
