When I left the salon today.

Anxiously awaiting the pics. Bumping, bumping. I like your siggy, your hair is so full and so much curls. HHJ!

Seems like she was doing the good old "compliment, wrapped in a insult trick"
By saying "you hair is really pretty" she was throwing a compliment....
then she messed up when she went on to say "that's hereditary"...as if there's NO WAY on earth your hair could be that pretty if it wasn"t alil "cherrokee" dashed in ya bloodline somewhere lol. that's jst my little two cents, though :).

Sent from my DROID PRO using Long Hair Care Forum App

I don't see why it has to be an insult. All of our physical features are genetic. Hair isn't exempt. Yes everyone can have healthy hair IF they take good care of it and are in good health - but some aspects of hair are hereditary. For example mine is exceptionally bulky. Nothing wrong with that.

Sounds fishy. I would have just told her thanks and booked it with my receipt lol. Repetition wasn't necessary if you heard her the first time so she was definitely emphasizing that it was hereditary and probably subtly hinting that pretty hair can't be achieved by your good hair practices alone. You're just "Lucky" with your genes.

Because it is a backhanded compliment

There was no need to add the statement and then emphasize it by saying it twice.

It was as if she was trying to bring her down a peg for daring to have nice hair
or
support her belief that Black women can't have nice long hair even though evidence to the contrary is standing right in her face.

It's like saying you have nice, long hair but you know...it's because you are biracial or you must have some Indian in your family.

wow. i wouldnt think the lady is being shady. Why bother complimenting if you are really trying to insult?

The first thing that came to my mind is that maybe she did not like the stylist and possibly doubted her ability.
but I agree....weird...

^ i agree .. she complimented you twice and took some of it back with a really ignorant comment...it's pretty obvious that by "hereditary" she means your hair is long because you MUST be mixed

ya'll are too much.
If someone told me I looked biracial for whatever reason.......I would take it as that. NO reading into it, no considering it an insult.

If they said my hair was pretty and it was hereditary, again I would never take it as such (maybe because I would never say that to someone else with the intention of it being insulting).

Maybe (as weird as it sounded) it is being read into a bit.

I just got home a little while ago and snapped a few shots of my hair.

Unfortunately I will not be posting any pics

I'm so sorry ya'll. But some of you may remember me posting threads about my hair thinning out. Well, I'm very happy with the job she did on my hair. She did a great job straightening it and all. But I could feel that my hair was much lighter as she was pressing it. It's thinner.

It wasn't as noticeable earlier because it was curled...but it's flatter now and after taking some shots in the mirror I actually almost cried! Sorry to sound so dramatic, but it's the truth. My hair has always always been thick and full....it's not anymore. I started shedding long strands of hair last year and I haven't figured out what the cause is. My hair is long, but I have less strands. I think it may be my blood pressure medication. Or, it could be a number of things...I don't know.

All I know is I can't look at those pics :nono: It's such a noticeable difference and I was hoping it wouldn't be that way cuz the last time I pressed it was four months ago and that was when friends noticed it was thinner. So I took four months off from pressing it and took good care of it but I don't know WHAT'S going on at the moment.

Sorry guys!

:look: :lachen:

Aw sorry to hear that dear. My hair is the same way. The first day it's pretty, then starts to look really thin. Yes, it could be your meds.

She wanted to make sure the other people in the saloon does not think there hair will be looking like yours when they leave. She new that there wasnt anyway she can make anyone hair look like yours so she said that.

What she really wanted to do was ask you if you can do hers like that but the fact that she is the hairdresser she knew better.

Girl your girl is beautiful.

If you are talking about who I think you are talking about, yeah, she's the manager. Last time I was there (about 4 months ago), her hair was always nice looking. its busted now??? Or maybe its busted by LHCF standards?

I'm going to have to agree with a previous poster. Yeah, it was a bit "extra" to repeat it twice like that. BUT, I do think sometimes people on the boards are oversensitive/read into stuff too much. Some things (strand size, density, texture, etc), really ARE hereditary. For instance, my reggie can be tight as it wants to be, my hair is never ever going to be as thick as Mdwezi's, I don't have that many hair folicles on my head and my strands are not that thick.

arent many things about us hereditary?

maybe our hairs' true potential was being suffocated by bad hair practices..... but the woaman wasnt lying our features, including hair, are hereditary.

I blame my father for my janky hairline

ooops, just saw Imanis post

I'm so sorry :( If it is your medication, could you they not switch you to something else? Have you had your thyroid levels checked?

Awwwwwwww ... it's OK, ZZ. I completely understand where you're coming from. Ironically, I'm going through the same exact dilemma right now.

I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel bad or pressure you to post pics. It sounds like it may be the meds. I'm sorry, I can only imagine how you feel.

Thanks! I'm not gonna lie; I avoided the mirror a little bit this morning because I was so down about my hair :nono: Back in Sept/Oct last time I had it pressed, I went out and saw some friends I hadn't seen in months. They were staring at my hair and touching it like, "What happened...??" That was when I knew something was wrong.

I had alot of labs done last year and everything is normal. I personally think its the medication because my hair has been through hell and back and it always remained THICK. At first I was thinking it could be me using the Denman brush too much, or tying the goody bands too tight with the buns I've been wearing almost daily, or not deep conditioning as often...

...but truth is, I've done all those things before and never seen thin hair like this. I am going to make an appointment with my PCP. I don't know if that'll help...because I don't know what is it about blood pressure medication that's making my hair thinner if that is indeed the culprit. I don't have too much hope that switching to a different one will make a difference but I do want to try.

I am actually looking back through some pics in my album here and on my fotki to see if I can pinpoint the timing of when things started to go downhill...I really do think it was around the time I started taking my BP medication but looking through the pictures may help. If it started thinning before then, I have hope maybe it's something I can do to address it quicker than changing meds.

In the meantime I think I will need to get on a new regimen to try to thicken up my hair. Maybe get back on a good multivitamin, some Omega 3's, and some products that are known to thicken strands or provide a fuller look to the hair. I may post a separate thread asking for help. But of course I welcome any input in here as well. :yep:

WoW sorry to hair uve been going through all this.

I think u made a good suggestion, upping vits and Omega (as long as you check it out with your Dr) as there may be some vits and minerals we just up and take which have the potential to conflict with meds.

your hair is yummy looking in your siggy, woudl you say it still looks the same? Sometimes we are more hard on ourselves

Thank you.

I have been wearing my hair like in my siggy alot over the past 6-9 months. So it basically looks the same when I wear it in that style. It looks full.

But that's because it's curly...when pressed you can really really see the difference. It's thin; almost see through in the bang area.

Girl it's okay...don't feel bad!

I mean, I woulda eventually taken and posted pics anyway (attempted to).

As I was leaving I was paying and the lady at the register (I think she is a manager?) complemented me and said, "Your hair is very pretty" while checking me out. I said thank you.

She proceeded to tell me about some referral program of theirs, and stopped mid sentence while staring at my hair to say "You know, hair is really REALLY pretty..."

I said thank you again.

She says, "You know that's hereditary, right?" :look:

I look up from signing my bill and just look at her and she repeats, "I'm just saying...that's hereditary."

???

Huh?

I think she was assuming you're of mixed heritage

HUGS!!!
I am sorry you are going through this. Going to your PCP or Internal Medicine Provider and having a through check up is a good idea. There are so many BP meds available, some with more side effects than others. Thyroid problems, autoimmune disorders, and other problems can cause thinning as well. An evaluation by a Dermatologist in addition may help if this is not related to other internal ailments.

ZZ, first of all, I'm sure your hair is still the bees knees. You're like a billionaire who suddenly became a millionaire. Lady, you're still rich.

Secondly, from my aunts, I know that blood pressure meds/beta blockers can definitely affect the condition of your hair, but the effect is temporary. It's kind of a cruel cycle because you take meds to make your blood pressure go down, then you see your hair change and that makes it go back up again.

So my unsolicited advice is don't worry about your hair. (Yeah, right, Pat. You realize you're on a hair board , right?) What I mean is don't *worry* about it. Keeping your stress low and focusing on your overall health are far more important. Get that right and your hair will follow. Garner's got some good advice above. When you get rid of the cause of the changes to your hair, your hair will come back lush, fabulous and will exceed its former glory. :bighug:

My hair is thin when straightened and full-looking when curly too. It is quite heartbreaking as I know it was thicker just a year ago. In my case, the thinning may be due to anemia.

THANKS....

I really needed to hear this this morning. I know it's "only hair"....:look:...(can I say that?)....I mean, in the grand scheme of things it's only hair...but it is heartbreaking.

When I got home last night I just remembered that night from a few months ago when I walked up to my friends and how they were looking at me when they saw my hair. Last night/today is just confirmation that it's not getting better and I'm just not looking forward to peoples' reactions this weekend and over the next week.
