What… you don't get your hair done every 2 weeks?

Frankly, I am over doing my own hair. If I could find a great stylist for a reasonable price, I'd never touch my own hair.

My hair is my hobby now. I enjoy caring for it, not relying on someone else to care for it for me.

Before my journey, yes, I was faithfully getting my hair done every 2 weeks at the salon. I saw nothing wrong with it but you also have to realize that I had great stylists growing up (aside from them all being scissor happy ) who practiced healthy hair practices too. Not only that, but that's all I knew and was exposed to growing up. My mother, grandmother, cousins, friends, everyone who was black and female got their hair done. I was never taught how to care for my own hair because my mother was never taught and neither was my grandmother and so on. I could style my own hair but when it came to caring for it, even just the basics? Totally clueless.

My hair journey was a complete and utter accident. I was content with my hair and had resigned myself to the fact that "black hair just didn't grow". I discovered the hair community on accident while searching for a video on YT and the rest is history. I educated myself and, not to sound cheesy, a whole new world was opened to me.

Now the only time I go to the salon is because I want to, not because I have to. I cannot even begin to describe how liberating that feeling is.

Haven't been in three years since I went natural. I don't plan to go back. I hate wasting hours waiting to finally sit in the chair. I'd rather do it myself. My hair got shorter and shorter the more I went to the salon.

I use to be a "every two weeks" girl in high school.

But then I went to college and money got realllllllllllll funny. So I became a D.I.Y'er. Its funny that people keep saying that stylist prefer dependency (not the exact words, but still...) because my stylist would always ask about my routine, products, give recs., give me samples to test. I think that was her nice way of saying, "Girl, PU-LEASE at least try to do you own hair!"

Nothing wrong with the salon but to not know how to wash your own hair and style is it is a bit much

I still go but every few months. since I'm moving out of state very soon I'm trying to get the basics down so I don't have desperately end up in someone's chair and they mess my hair up.

Not at all. Not everyone wants to DIY. Some may think you're crazy for doing something in your house someone else could do in a fraction of the time.

No reason to be divisive on it. People outsource tasks all the time. The confusion about hair is puzzling I guess I should want to do my hair. But I don't

I don't enjoy it either. It's a necessary evil for me though. I can't expect others to treat it with the respect and have the knowledge of it that I do.

I know whatever makes a woman happy… but in my neck of the woods if you are not going to get your hair done regularly.. something is wrong.. unless you wear your hair as a natural or wear a wig.

I have a confession to make. Before joining LHCF I never, ever did my own hair. I used to go to the salon for everything! But then where I'm from you get a side-eye if you say you do your hair at home.

I live in the DMV. I know ladies both natural and relaxed, that dont' even own their own products. They go to the salon like clockwork because they want to look the BOMB. Which is totally fine, I think, if you have the money.

What I don't think is cool is one natural head I know who went 6-8 weeks between shampoo/condition sessions because she straightens her hair and didn't want it to revert. She used witch hazel for weeks pretty much. That ain't cool.

I love my stylist! She treats my hair like I do and she cares about its health. When i had highlights i used to go every 2-4 weeks. Now that i'm wigging it for the next year i haven't been in over a year. I think I'll go get my hair sttaightened for Christmas or new year's eve.

To each their own. I have never gone to the salon as frequently as mentioned in this thread but I did go about every three months at least for my relaxer and trims. Now as a natural I have mostly done NY hair myself outside of trims and cuts. I had my hair colored in Sept and I try to make go to the salon once a month. I've never had my hair color this light (natural color is jet black and its a caramel blonde) so I want to make sure it stays healthy.

I remember getting to college and so many of the girls were going to get their hair done every other week, and if I remember correctly the process would last them a full Saturday!! I could not. When I first went to the popular salon, I remember being asked if I wanted to set my next appointment in 2 weeks' time. What?? I just shelled out $85. You really think I wanna come back in 2 weeks?!?!

Regular hair salon visits just aren't part of my culture. My family full of women are a bunch of DIYs. This salon thing happened really infrequently, so when I saw just how committed all the girls were, that confused me a bit.

One time I remember this girl asking me if my hair was as long as it is (must have been MBL) because I rarely get it done. I was a little taken aback by the question bc most of the time my hair was in a loose bun or something.

Anyway. I have been to the salon 1x since July 2013. I'd really like to go before year's end.

I use to get my hair down every other week when I first went off to college. My Mom paid for it, so that I wouldn't have to worry about it. Once I had gotten use to college life, I went back to my norm, which was a few times a year for special occasions or to get my hair trimmed. I haven't been to a hair salon in about 15 years now. I think that I was still in medical school or something.
I don't trust anyone with my hair.

I was a once every three month girl until joining LHCF. This was for relaxer touch ups. In between I was a do it yourself girl. I was queen of the roller set and braid out in the 80's. In college quite a few girls had skills- braids etc were popular. I tried once when I had a short relaxed cut to go every two weeks but I found it a huge time commitment so I opted out. I recently found a good stylist so I plan to start going maybe once every two months just to give myself a break after so many years of DYI.

i used to go every 2 weeks when i didnt really know how to take care of my hair. Now that I am more knowledgeable i stopped going so frequently. now i only go if i want to get my hair straightened. so much money is saved this way too

I will say that on Thanksgiving day I got a little salon envy as my cousin sported a cute bob with some fierce highlights. She is a faithful salon customer. It almost made me reconsider but I know that I love to do my own hair.

Rocky91, Wouldn't that be a dream? When relaxed, I had a standing Saturday morning appointment at 7 AM. I loved going to the salon. All the latest news, not just gossip as the stylists were all older than me, married with children. Then I went natural for the first time and started going someone else, but not as often. When that salon's relaxer then rinse two weeks later took out my hair, which was after I moved about 15 miles away, I stopped going. I've been to a salon near me two or three times, but whatever I have done, they want to blow dry or flat iron first.

The time spent is a lot more that I'm natural trying to do everything for my hair. The money may be less, but my time is more valuable as I can't make any more of that. And the results with a salon visit while relaxed were always on point and eye catching. I wear hats and scarves to cover up most days now that I do my own hair.

My mama said my old stylist does hair by appointment only now. It would be about a 30 mile ride one way to her house, but you ladies really have me thinking about being relaxed again.

I went weekly when I was relaxed because I could never re- create the shine, bounce and swang of my stylist. Now that I'm natural, I wear weaves and buns only with natural hair and style on my own but it honestly never looks as good as when I was going to the salon.

When I had a relaxer, I went every 8 weeks for a re-touch. I washed and styled at home. My hair styles were only fly for 1 day, so I couldn't see paying that much for a 1 day style. Now with natural hair, I get a professional cut yearly. I do everything else myself. I trim, color, and style my own hair. I had a great stylist, who was a master cutter. She gave me great advice, but I did not follow. Now I understand why she warned against the flat iron every day. I find with my natural hair, imperfections are harder to spot and my styles last longer. My trims may not be perfect, but I dare any stylist to find 1/2-2 cm difference in kinky coily hair that is armpit length and super thick.

I've never been a person to go to the salon too often but now I'm pretty sure I'm salon-free. I've had too many bad experiences to justify going back. I'll be doing my relaxers, trims, styles, care – everything at home. The stylists I've went to were never really great overall in the long run – pretentious, ignorant, self-hating, rude would be some words I'd use to describe them. Salon visits would never really be super relaxing either but I guess the idea of going is supposed to be like a pampering treatment so there are some parts that are stressful and other parts that put me at ease. I guess I really have a love/hate relationship with going – more hate than love, obviously. I can only see myself going back if I wanted a really nice cut and even then, I wouldn't have a set salon to book haircut appointments, to be honest. I feel like stylists can get too used to you when you get too comfortable. Also, they can screw your hair up in 2 seconds so I don't know... trust issues.
