Not using a moisturizer between washes. Sometimes I would use oil, but usually I would put nothing in my hair btw. washes (at the time like every 10-14 days) unless it felt super dry, which it usually did.

Combing too often on dry, unmoisturized hair. All I would hear was snap, crackle, pop and I wouldn't stop combing till I couldn't hear that any more.

When I would get braids I didn't care how tight they were as long as they would give me a instant face lift :lachen:

When I would get weave glued in....taking it out by ripping it out. I only stopped if I felt dire pain from it...what tha...

Relaxing & getting braids in one setting.

Never sleeping with my hair protected & browne styling gel was my moisturizer...:nono:

Cutting w/ each 6 week relaxer touch up. CUTTING not trimming:nono:

Wearing my hair down ALL the time as soon as it was 1 centimeter past SL.:nono:

Inconsistent haircare practices. Sometimes I was on the ball most times I was not. Knowing & doing are two completely different things.

Finally I never set a goal before joining hairboard. I figured Long hair was something you either had or you didn't. Now I know it as an admirable achievement that actually takes some time, patience & effort.

My hair was dry and weak before and I never trimmed my ends. I used heat appliances regularly

after I added a combination of protein/ moisture, cut back on heat and started dusting my ends more frequently using a mild childrens relaxer every 4 months instead of a stronger perm every 6-8 weeks, and taking hair vitamins. Now I am growing my hair healthier and longer.

Not deep conditioning enough.:nono:

Trimming every 5 weeks.:nono::nono:

Combing- really raking-through my hair from root to tip every day, several times a day.:nono::nono::nono:

I've changed all these things and my hair is so much better.:yep::yep::yep::yep:

putting no form of mosture in my hair besides dax and gel and using the small end of the comb to comb threw it while i watched my hair fall to the floor:wallbash:

-Never or rarely DCing
-relaxing all of my hair from root to tip
-tearing through my hair with a comb, ripping tangles and knots
-letting my hair brush my shoulders
-neglecting to wear my scarf/bonnet at night

I would wear a scarf for 4 weeks after gettting a touch up, but after that nothing.
I always wore my hair down
I didnt know that I should actually moisturize my ends
I didnt deep condition, I would just trim off the bad ends

Strong relaxers (all I needed to use was a mild relaxer). Misuse of heat and too many trims. :nono: I went to a stylist for years but now I am a DIY and keeping it simple has worked for me.

This is sooo true to a T for me. Especially my stylist I swear I feel like I was giving her money to mess up my hair now that I think about!

Permanent dye, bleach, haircuts (because I hated that "growing out" look), not deep conditioning, glue-in weave, not trimming split ends... not properly moisturing my hair.

Let me count the ways......

relaxing every 5 weeks root to tip

flatironed e.v.e.r.y.d.a.y.

combing dry hair with a fine tooth comb

never used any kind of conditioner......ever

using glue for my weaves

when I did get the weave sewn in, I'd wear it too long (hair underneath loc'ed)

never conditioned after coloring

when my hair was braided I only washed my hair when it was time for the braids to be re-done (usually every 6 to 8 WEEKS)

didn't know a thing about moisturizing besides braid spray once a week and that was only *if* my scalp was itching

It's only by the grace of Almighty God that I am not completely bald.

Did I already post in this thread...? :look:

For me, I would say:

-Not moisturizing my hair properly

-Not detangling properly (combing hair while it's dry and with the wrong type of comb, etc.)

-Mistaking dry hair for damaged hair. As a result in my earlier years as a natural I unnecessarily (sp?) trimmed hair off thinking it was damaged just because it looked dry/raggedy. It just needed moisture and TLC...those ends weren't split so I really did not need to trim them, and thus coulda had a little more length

i used to get my ends clipped every two weeks and sometimes before then. i never moisturized my ends properly.

eta: i was obsessed with bleaching my hair and then putting a rinse overtop of it. this plus no moisturizer, only african pride oil left me with hair all over the bathroom sink.

Not moisturizing frequently or properly. I kept micros in my hair the vast majority of the time - my hair would literally only see water about 4-5 times a year :nono: Then when I did call myself moisturizing my hair, it was with products laced w/ mineral oil and/or petrolatum.

The other problem that I'm still trying to work on is being patient with detangling.

How long you got?? LOL

  • No conditioning
  • washing only on perm day- eek, I know, I know........
  • perms every 4 weeks
  • heat every day
  • not wrapping up hair at night
  • fine tooth combs...............
and the list goes on...................

Overlapping
fine toothed combs
flat ironing every day
wrong products
not enough deep conditioning
weaves, not knowing hot to take them out properly
being too rough with my hair (still need to work on this a little bit)

Not knowing how to retain moisture in my hair. As soon as I figured out that the right product and 2 hour DC's under a hot dryer did it, I started to get growth.
