What I Miss About Being Relaxed...

I miss the easy care and styling. I can't see my growth because shrinkage is a beast. :ohwell: I don't really miss the relaxer, but the ease of a one second pony tail, I miss. I am trying to work out daily and it makes my hair look horrible. I currently can't do a pony tail on my natural hair.:nono:

I'm leaving this thread because its making have transitioner's regret! LOL!! But I miss being able to get up in the morning with smooth edges and walking out the door after spending only 2 minutes on my hair.

I miss smooth hair. I miss my rollersets, the shine, the feeling of hair on my back, smooth hairs without crinkles. I miss my amazing buns and ponytails, and not having to have a headband to hold back stay hairs.

I'm really struggling at this point in my transition... let me get out of this thread.

Short detangling sessions, swingy hair that I could do myself (the only way my hair gets straight and STAY straight is if I pay $80 for someone to do it), easy to style.

Being relaxed was less work for me than being natural.

Cant think of anything. Although I never really had damaged hair, it was not unique, had no personality, and was the same basic stuff erybody else with a relaxer and a wrap has.

Now, I can walk into a room and nobody has hair like mine. Yup, that unicorn appeal;)

Don't let this thread discourage you. Its all in fun. I've never missed my relaxed hair at all. I had to struggle to come up with something I missed, lol. Even as long, thick, and healthy as my relaxed hair was, its much more of all 3 now.

The sheer ignorance of all things hair related. I could wash my hair with no conditioner. Slap on some something with African or silky in the title and kim. I could go to sleep with my scarf on and have the same exact hairstyle days in a row.

This is exactly how I feel!!! Ignorance is bliss! I miss the word "detangle" being absent from my vocabulary! Being able to do a last minute "out" hairstyle with no problem.

However, having said all that, I loved my relaxed hair but I LOOOOVE my natural hair more. I still am amazed at the versatility! So for those of you that are transitioning, don't give up hope. You can really have the best of both worlds once your transition is over.

AWWWWWWW>>> I read this post and Lawd knows I tried to reach deep and find something I missed about perming my hair but Alas I couldn't find ANYTHING. My perm days were all down hill and all bad. I won't bore you with the details and I know this is not a permed vs. natural post but going natural was inevitable and the BEST thing I did for me.

GOOD point :yep:

sunnieb Oh.... Where do I start? I miss my perfect ends, just shaking my head, and it starts wrapping itself... The shine .... wrapping my hair nightly.... Didnt have to worry about products, moisture etc I had 0 products .. I mean 0...

BUT I lived in a salon... Went every week religiously... washed n roller set... Stylist was old school... Never blow dried, Never flat ironed... Hair was lush... I relaxed every 6 weeks though.. She was supposed to trim my ends with every perm.. but most times, ends were so perfect she had nothing to trim...

The only downside was that the back of my head always fell... like a little section of my back hair... Now that I'm natural, I see that that section is a soft and fragile 4A while every other part of my head is a very course 4B.... We should have applied the relaxer last to that area, but since I didnt know I had different textures, treating it the same as my 4B head was too much for it.

Then I moved away, started flat ironing weekly, hair fell out...went natural.... It's been a love hate relationship.. Hair is really course, really really course.... Hair has damaged a lot due to manipulation, suffered major heat damage...

Hair has grown though.. Longest layer @ APL, but it is very uneven... The cost savings are great... I paid my stylist $90 every month, and I could get whatever done to it, perm, wash, anything my hair needed.

I'm still trying to figure it out... If I am anywhere close to my old hair stylist, i may go relaxed again..

Im afraid of chemical/relaxer effects on my health long term and im really trying to stay natural with all my products.. 3 years of bein natural, I'm still in limbo.

My hair grows great in twists... The only time I dont have to worry about my hair falling is when its in twists.. everything else is a recipe for disaster.. Wondering how long I can live in twists... Looks like I can have great natural hair by being constantly in twists, or just getting relaxed again... Still confused.. (I'm sure you can tell)

Nice thread topic!

I would be interested in hearing from more current naturals who loved their relaxed hair and never had issues with it.....like me.

I mean really, if you hated getting a relaxer, burned each time, had no edges, got oozing sores, etc., who would blame you for not missing that process?

I miss not being able to comb/brush my hair everyday day........ i shed a large forest animal worth of shed hair everytime i do my hair and quite frankly its getting OLD all that shed hair is soooo gross!!

I miss just not having to worry about sweating or the dry heat and my hair reverting. I also hate the fact that stylist charge just as much for a press as a relaxer would be. But a relaxer latest longer.

I don't have too many great memories of when I was relaxed because I didn't know how or what it took to take care of my hair. I was constantly doing things that I know I should've been bald headed.

I've been thinking for a while that I really wish I had put more effort into my relaxed hair. I found this forum when I was about 3 months into my transition so I was already leaving my relaxed hair behind. I think that if I had all of the information that's available on this site I could have had very long, healthy, relaxed hair.

I don't plan on relaxing again only because growing my hair out was a lengthy process and I don't have another 3 years to do it again.

I never had issues with relaxed hair. Mine was always healthy. I miss roller wraps sooo bad!!! :) But my pressed hair is way more georgeous..the curls just dont last as long...sigh....

I miss the ease, my relaxed hair was so much easier to me. No tangling sessions, no "ouch" combing moments, styling was easier. I'm having to learn my natural hair for real this time. The last time I went natural, I kept it hid in braids or went to the shop - I never took the time to learn my own hair which is what I plan on doing this time.

The main thing about my natural hair that I love the most is that it's so strong & thick. I like it better than my relaxed hair, in spite of the amount of work involved.
