What I Miss About Being Relaxed...

I miss....I miss...I misss...nothing. I can't think of anything except severe breakage. Sure it would detangle fast, but thats also b/c my hair was thinned out so much. I hated the fresh relaxer look. It would be so flat to my head and so straight. I couldn't wait for newgrowwth. Wait, I know what I missed, newgrowth. But now I have a head full of it :)

Wow this is really interesting to me. When I was relaxed I felt like I was living in hair chaos! LOL I can't ever remember a time when I didn't struggle with my relaxed hair. I had no clue about maintenance or styling or technique or ANYTHING! I was always envious of people with beautiful relaxed hair because I never had it.

Then I BC'ed and everything changed. I feel like my natural hair is far more manageable than my relaxed hair ever was or could be. To this day, I still can't maintain a straight style for more than a day before I start looking a bit crazy. :lachen:I guess all that was to say that I envy you all your happy remembrances because I'll never have that!

Knowing EXACTLY what my hair was going to look like for an event, because my hair was so predictable. Flat ironed styles, seeing my length and having it swang. My wash n go's - still maintained my curls they were just very loose, so I was able to see all my length. Falling asleep and not waking up with a flat-on-one-side-afro.

Still can't see myself going back tho.... the pros far outweigh the cons.

I felt the same way when I got my hair pressed and flat ironed (never relaxed). My hair was BONE straight because the "old school" lady that did my hair knew how to do a hard press. It was tight as hell, especially right before a large "JDub"/church event.

All I had to do was wrap it at night, and I was done. That type of ease I DO miss.

I did long to get my hair relaxed as a teen, but my mother never allowed it, even if I was going to pay for it myself. :lachen:

Thought i'd come up in here to see if you guys would make me miss a relaxer...NOPE!
...my perms never looked good till I was 3-4 weeks in. 'Tis all...carry on!

My hair is flat ironed right now so I have nothing to miss. I like my blown out natural hair much more than my relaxed hair.

I miss having my hair look great every day. I stayed in the salon when I had a relaxer, so our always looked fresh. With my natural hair I sometimes look crazy. And I have to prepare days in advance if I really want it to look good.

The pros of natural hair definitely outweigh the cons though.

What I miss about being relaxed... :scratchch

NOT A THING!

I can still wear straight hair if I wish and do everything I did with relaxed hair if I wish--and even more now because it's longer. I'm so happy I have the option to not wear straight hair and that I don't have to depend on anyone for my hair's upkeep and don't have to deal with two textures and don't have to spend crazy money on hair.

I suppose for me being relaxed was more work because I always had to do my hair every morning. Even just wrapping it at night and unwrapping in the morning was more work than I have to do now. I can literally go a weeks w/o doing anything to my natural hair besides washing it (not even moisturizing after the wash) and I can still get away w/o ever needing to detangle or ever having problems. Can't beat that!

:look:..... I miss ..... :look: the thinning, the burning, the unevenness, the absent edges, the tri colored hair, the money out of my wallet....
OH! You asked what do I miss?

NOT a THANG.... after 13 years. I am grateful I woke up.....and stopped the madness.

My hair was:nono:... My hair now????:lick::yep:

I admit that I do have more "bad" (IMO) hair days than when I relaxed. That's just because I haven't gotten creative with my protective styling yet. Sometimes I don't feel like doing twists or my twistouts end up looking terrible. I miss being able to wrap my hair every night and it comes out looking shiny and bouncy the next morning. But that's about it.

Not much. Once I found a stylist who can straighten my hair just a blowdryer and marcel irons and trim it accoding to my specifications, I felt very comfortable going natural. My only thing is that I need to work on my styling techniques, but I am sure it will get better with practice and as my hair gets longer.

I tried to think of something I miss about relaxers.... But I'm stumped. I used to hate getting relaxers because I burned so badly.

Nice thread topic!

I would be interested in hearing from more current naturals who loved their relaxed hair and never had issues with it.....like me.

I mean really, if you hated getting a relaxer, burned each time, had no edges, got oozing sores, etc., who would blame you for not missing that process?

I miss the 1-2 hour wash days  and the fact that I never had to detangle it. And rollersetting.

Say what? you never had to detangle? Im relaxed and i have to detangle every dam day and night. and as i speak i still have a little knot in my bun:look:, just a little one tho, but still.

@sunnieb, I didn't have burns. I didn't lose my edges. I didn't get oozing sores. So my experience with relaxed hair was not negative at all. But I still have more joy being natural than relaxed.

The versatility I have now, is one thing I didn't have with relaxed hair. Relaxed hair styles were limited to only what one can do with straight hair. Now I can enjoy both worlds.

The independence I have now is another thing I didn't have with straight hair. Because I can't see every corner of my own head to ensure relaxer application doesn't overlap and weaken the point of demarcation, I had to have another's eyes do my touchups. Don't need anyone to do my hair now.

I love not having to deal with two textures...Not having to worry about paying for a touch-up or the fact that there's always a risk of over/underprocessing... Not having to wonder if formula changes in relaxers will affect how they process the new growth and whether I will get the same results as before....

Being able to do everything I could do with relaxed hair and so much more, not to mention I can also afford to be lazy and not end up with matted hair or unraveling styles (I can't even remember when I last had a bad hair day) makes the world I live in today paradise compared to the life I had with relaxed hair. My hair isn't a chore like some people seem to have it, and I cherish shrinkage, don't deal with SSKs or knots, don't spend hours styling my hair and detangling isn't something I ever need to do. So I can't identify at all with the reasons people miss relaxed hair (or the negative experiences that make some not miss relaxed hair) because none of that applied or applies to me. Life is just so much better for me with natural hair.

I was trying to think of what I miss... and all I can say are my bantu knot-outs. I can still flat iron my hair then do them, but its not the same- and its more work.
Even that I don't really miss that much...

I miss:

1) No single strand knots

2) Detangling in 1 minute or less

3) Being able to do my hair on short notice without having to hop in the shower to get my hair wet.

4) Having all my length visible.

ETA: I never had problems with a relaxer. I never had sores or my hair burned out. I moved out of my moms place when I went to college and couldn't afford the $90 touch up. I bc'd after 6 months and never looked back. Even though I can afford the relaxer now I have no desire to relax.
