Do you color at home or in salon?
do you do full head color?
what products do you use?
are you satisfied with the results?
do you relax and color?

Any transitioners w/ color in their hair? I'm nervous if I color that the new growth will get a different color than my texlaxed hair....:perplexed
 
Henna is a natural and safe way to color your hair depending of the color you want to achieve. So far I used burgundy gave me a nice red highlights and recently I did a henna treatment and my hair is a deep brown higlights

Whimsy....what color were you going for? That will determine what process and developer etc... will be required. Also impact of the color you go for will also have to do with your hair strands personal characteristics.


Not to get on my soap box too much but it is possible to have healthy color treated hair. The problems people run into usually come from a couple of things

1. They don't go to a trained colorist, all stylists are not colorist..big difference. With that being said, go to lots of consultations and ask questions before you decide who to go too. Ask about their training, products.
2. They try to do too much at home
3. They didn't have healthy hair to start out with. Color isn't for everyone. If you don't have healthy hair to start out with and then combine with improper care afterwards then you are going to have problems.

I wanted to get a browneyreddish color, not too light though

allegedly.
I dyed it black in feb 07. I think the sun had some serious effect on it though because it's now various shades of dark brown, especially on the top 6 or 7 inches it's a lot more brown than black.

i'm just bored and don't want to cut so i need a color change.

Okay....they will probably lift off the black but when they do you will get green. This happens anytime you use black dye. Its not green giant green but its green. From then they will probably use reds to tone the green into brown.

Okay so I've got to find a good colorist then. Is this going to be harder to take care of? any special after-care instructions?

Since some of it has already started to fade a bit it shouldn't be a big job. Call around to a couple of salons and scheldule consultations, they usually are free. Tell and show them what you want. Bring pics that show the color you are aiming for. Bring pics that show things you like. For example, lets say you see a pic of someone with blond hair but you like the placement of the highlights or undertones. Bring that pic and tell them just that. Ask what they would do to get a similar effect on your hair with the shades you like. Then ask about what kind of process would they do to get you too that point. There is more than one way to skin a cat so every colorist isn't going to approach it the same. Shop around until you find someone you are comfortable with. Ask about their policies if you are not happy with your job.

As far as care is concerned assess your hair before you color. Make sure your protein moisture balance is good and check your porosity. Afterwards keep up with your conditioning treatments. You might want to check out the colored and growing support thread. There are some useful links in there as well as some pics from Tracy (color guru) that she just posted today with her current color.
 
I just use regular henna for the conditioning and strengthening. My naturally dark sandy hair has turned about as red as I'm cool with at this point, so I might try alma powder to go more chestnut brown so I don't end up burgundy ~shivers~. I try doing just my roots now and after transitioning for a while I tried to match up the ends and the roots, but the ends are always redder anyway. I don't sweat it.

Other than henna and very occasional clear glosses, I've never been into coloring my hair.
 
I am transitioning indefinitely (almost a year into the process):yay:and I got highlights when I was still getting relaxed. The brand of color my stylist used was Keune. Actually my brother is my stylist and he is also professionally trained by the company (Keune) and teaches classes for them.

I would like to try to do my next color job with henna but I am just too afraid of how the final results will turn out since. I agree with gymfreak about going to a colorist, especially if you already have some color deposits in your hair. Because of the existing color in your hair, when you look at a color board and say "I want that color", you already know that it's not going to turn out that particular color on the board. A person that knows what they are doing will be able to explain the process they will take your hair through and be able to help you know possible outcomes.(b/c of the color already on your hair)

I would like to get my highlights touched up but I am thinking I may wait until I am 100% natural; who knows, by that time, I may be bold enough to experiment with henna to see what kind of outcome I will get.

But recently I did a henna gloss and it came out nice! I like it! I only let it sit for 30 minutes, applied for 40 minutes, and VOILA! I had color (my hair is weird). If I let it sit for hours I almost shudder to think how it would have come out :blush:.
