What do you do to stop picking in your hair?

I'm newly natural (I'm in love btw!!), but I've had this problem since before I BC'ed 5 days ago. I have this really bad habit that I pick at my new growth. I'm just so intrigued and fascinated by my natural hair I guess that I just wanna feel and touch it alot lmao. But In the new spirit of determination to become at least brastrap length by Summer 2010, I need to kick this habit BAD because it's no good from what I hear lol. Does anyone any ideas on what to do to keep my hands busy everywhere else except my hair? I was thinking about taking up knitting but I dunno, what do you guys do?

Congratulations on your BC!

I don't really have any advice, but when I got too obsessed with touching my NG, I started cowashing daily, so I can feel it all I wanted, then during the day if I got the urge to play, I'd tell myself to wait until that night.

LOL, I take a deep breath and throw my satin bonnet back on.

IA. I have that bad. I always am messing with my hair. I get home and pieces are sticking up all over the place. But if you are able to (if you're home...) put on your scarf or satin bonnet.

You may think you are only touching your hair, but this can lead to breakage. I know sometimes I will play in my hair and notice a strand or two that I have pulled out or broken accidentally. It adds up:nono:

Also, a lot of the times I did not even notice that I was pulling my hair. maybe you can enlist a friend to help you. Have them tell you when you are picking or have them hit your hand...I know right? But this helps. It's kind of like Pavlov's dogs you will be conditioned to stop pulling it.

Plus people tell me I look silly and like a ditz messing with my hair. Harsh, but effective. Think yt girl twirling her strands...:look:

I've had the same problem. I have been all in m head since the BC. I love it, but I also know that my hair grows better when left alone.

I said I would enjoy my hair for a week and then braid it up, so that's what I will do.

I have this problem also....on my way home from work while I'm in the car my right hand is holding the wheel and my left elbow is rested along the window and I'm just a touching away.....

I'd like to get past this stage myself....

i was the same way when i was natural. IMO, there is no way to stop it lol. even if i threw on a satin bonnet, i was picking at the coils with the bonnet on =/ enjoy being natural =]

Congratulations on ur BC! Enjoy your hair, touch it, love it, rub it GET TO KNOW IT!!
In the beginning I would wear a silk scarf on my head just to keep my hand out of the newness of my napps. Protective styling also helps...as soon as I could grab a handfull of hair I was twisting, cornrowing, braiding whatever...

I totally understand you... I am only 11 weeks into my transition and I play with my new growth a lot! I know it's not the best thing to do but I can't help it for now... maybe you'll get bored eventually? Lol.

Yeah! It's just so interesting to see that such a pretty looking and good feeling structure grew out of my head so I just keep touching it. As trippy as that sounds

This is a problem with me too. My mother comments on it all the time. I do find that the scarf helps. At the same time it takes 70 days to make something a habit. So if you can find a way to make a habit of NOT touching your hair for 70 days you should be good. This is my goal for 2009...I still have to make a plan
