If you'd asked me this even 3 months ago, I would have voted weaves hands down. But since starting my LHHJ, I've become semi-obsessed with my hair (yes, I've admitted it lol) and need to have constant access to my hair so half wigs have become one of my new main-stay PSs. I co-wash 2x/week and moisturize daily and it's easier to do this in wigs over a weave.

I just came back from a cruise today, and I was actually thinking about this question all week. The 2 half-wigs I bought for my trip cost me less than $35 combined and they held up far better than any of my weaves ever did! I'm used to spending $200+ on weaves (plus the cost of the hair) every 2-3 months. The wigs I bought are both by Outre (I think?) and are called "Evony" (My personal favorite) and "Kelly". I got them from hairsisters.com and they have a kinky/curly texture. I love them.

I'm in the minority but I love weaves! Half wigs are cool but I need very low manipulation for my hair. And ever since I saw Reniece's hair via weaves years ago, I've never turned back. Plus the fact that I do my own, doesn't hurt!

I voted wig....just as the other ladies stated...I prefer the full access to my hair whenever I need it. I've worn weaves and I've washed my hair underneath but it just never feels as clean as I'd like...I'm currently wearing braids because I have access to my scalp and when I wash I can really feel the water on my scalp.... I think I will switch to wigs in the winter months.

I've been wearing a few wigs for the past couple of weeks, and I'm really missing my weave. The wig isn't laying like I want to and it looks fake. I'll be doing my sew ins again real soon...

Honey chile......that Jersey Girl done straight brought me out of lurk mode with her tales! Check this one out....my and DH went to Circus Circus (Las Vegas) on a date. I had this really cute wig that I had bought for the occassion, and oh by the way, he actually knew that it was a wig but was ok with it bcuz it was really cute. Anyway, we walking throught the amusement park and you couldn't tell me sh@t! We decided to ride the roller coster. Mind you.....I had considered bobby pinning that joint down, but assumed that it was secure enough with that adjustable band it came with. I'm quite sure you all can figure out how that one ended. Talking about straight up embarrasssssssed, however, murphy's law did not trap the kid. The wig actually flew in the seat right behind me, so you already know I grabbed that sucka and duck somewhere to put that thang right back on my head. The killing part is that NO ONE ELSE observe this fiasco but my kids and my future DH. But honey, my man was ride or die for show. He help me run and duck, assisting me in my unfortunate situation. Now that's what's up!!!!!!!

This is why I'll never skimp on the bobby pins!

I'm glad it worked out in the end. Talk about a true test of love!

I tell you one thing girlfriend.........experience has a PhD in education. I will always secure my wigs under all circumstances. But to answer OP question, I prefer wigs....when they stay put

Isn't it easier to wash your hair in a wig than a weave? You can easily just take off the wig and wash and condition your hair.

I voted for weave. I love the versatility of a wig but I'm always afraid that someone is going to yank it off. And I have a lace front that I love but the combs reeked havoc on my edges. My hair grew so much under a weave and I like that I'm not in contact with my natural hair. I also like that while I'm taking care of my hair underneath by ignoring it while nourishing it. My weave will always look great and I'm not hitting my own hair with heat and other things. I like weaves more than wigs because I don't have to put it on everyday or remember to put it on.

Hate bad wigs, love good weaves. Good weaves serve as a long term protective style for me and as long as I took the proper care in the take down I don't lose any progress/hair. The only time I have had problems with weaves are when the cornrows are installed incorrectly (too tight and too small). I have a curly weave in now and it will probably be my staple style until I can figure out what to do to my hair or reach full BSL.

lace and half wigs .. for all the reason already mentioned, but my main reason is because I can get to (and care for) my hair everyday

I would say wigs over weaves any day. Weaves destroyed my hair. With wigs, I can care for my hair to my hearts content, wash, dc, moisturize, seal, etc.

All wigs are not created equal to me though. My hairline is very fragile, so I don't like full wigs. I love half wigs. I think weaves do look more realistic, but if you take the time to work with a half wig- you can get it looking great.

I agree. I prefer wigs, half wigs specifically, since I can make them look more realistic. I did not do well with weave, but I also was not taking care of my hair very well underneath.

I vote wigs.Although weaves provide impressive growth they have a tendency to thin the hair out.

Having worn both, I'd say wigs. You can take care of your hair much more often and it's easier, for me anyway.

Wigs! This way i can take them off and wash and moisturize my hair properly and i like seeing my hair and messing with my own hair

For me, wigs hands down for several reasons.
Firstly, wigs give me the versatility of change on a regular basis, daily if needed - shhots several times a day if I choose, lol.

Secondly, wigs offer me the ability to wash, cowash and/or treat my own hair when needed. I do some heavy exercises that make me sweat a lot and this is a must for me to be able to clean my hair and scalp as often as I need to.

Thirdly, with wigs when I can wash and DC my hair frequently, I don't have to worry so much about my own hair dreading up on me or smelling funky and buldling up heavy gunk because I can't get through the tracks of a weave properly.

Fourthly, when a weave starts to mat up and tangle after just 3 or 4 weeks in my hair, I get antsy and angry for spending all that morney first for the weave, then a ton more to have someone install it for such a short period of time. I don't waste a lot of money on wigs. They only cost me anywhere for $20 to $40 and still last me a long while because I get to take it off, detangle, and wash it for the next day.

Fifthly, detangling a weave while it is still attached to my hair would damage and thin out my hair from all the tugging and pulling while with a wig, I don't exert any kind of tension on my lovely strands.

Wigs are just better for my hair. My hair grows in a lot healthier and thicker with wigs than it does with weaves.

They both have pros and cons.

Weaves look more believable because your own hair is blended in. They are more work though. IMO, a weave is just a notch below having to do your own hair. You also can't really "get" to your own hair with a weave. If you are an exerciser, the hair underneath can smell mildewy after a while from being damp so much.

Wigs are much easier but they can look obvious. A good LF can help with that though.

I've gone through periods of time where I preferred one over the other. Right now I'm not really feelings wigs anymore. I'd rather wear my own hair than the wigs. I still have to do something with my hair (whether it's plait it or braid it, etc.) before I put it on and then end up looing like whodunit when I take it off. I'm gonna vote weave. I can just get up and go with that. No combing or styling necessary.

To take a weave off your head is about 2 hours....with a wig? 1.5 seconds.. maybe less..

To put a weave ON your head? 1.5 to 2 hours depending on if you can find a competent stylist that can braid quickly without damaging you hair..

To put a wig on? 1.5 seconds, maybe less

To moisturize your natural hair with a wig? 1.5 to 5 minutes with a massage.

To moisturize with a weave? 5- 10 mins. due to getting to the hair between the tracks, and not getting an overall beneficial massage due to the tracks.

To install a weave? $150-$250 with hair depending on the stylist.

To slap on a wig? Free.. also usually done in 1.5 seconds.... maybe less..

Never tried a weave, but I do like the idea of being able to mess with my hair when I want. Weaves for me are too... foreign. That might not be the word I'm looking for but I don't like things attached to my head that did not come out of it for too long. I like access to my real hair. Weave would look more natural depending on how it is done though...

now that i discovered 1/2 wigs, i'll NEVER get a weave again...its the best thing since sliced bread on bad/lazy hair days and you can get the weave look and still take good care of your hair underneath, or switch it up as often as you want.

I'm a half wig stan! You can get the weave look without have the barbie doll hairline. You dont have to pay for anybody to put it in and it takes less than 5 seconds to put it on. When I get sick of it I just take it off or switch it up. And when I want that style again I just put it back on. I dont have to worry about breakage from it being sewn on too tight or that my hair will accidentally cut from trying to take it out.
