Oh I totally agree with that. There's a LARGE bulk of wealthy folk walking around with their noses in the air looking like da** fools! I see it all the time. Like that tanning nonsense.

Mugshots, these days, are public online. It doesn't have to be law enforcement to do that. Not saying that it wasn't, but it doesn't have to be.

I'm trying not to write a dissertation, but, it's the way the women are presented - mug shots - that implicates a negative undertone; it's not just the hairstyles themselves. The message is "these black women with their ghetto hairstyles are criminals/thugs." In reality, a woman's hair style does not implicate what type of person she is. There's plenty of women with blond hair and blue eyes committing crimes Where are the funny emails with the white women with stringy dirty blonde hair?

From another standpoint, these styles are actually art. Oxygen capitalized off outrageous traditionally African-American styles with a whole series "Hair Battle" and these types of styles are prized in black hair shows. Although I wouldn't wear them myself, I'm in no place to judge. I'm not faulting you or anyone else who finds it funny. I just don't.

Most of the names here are very conservative except Avenania and Qwanetha. I know that sometimes the "ghetto" names get outrageous but I don't understand why they are hated on so hard. If a foreigner comes with some crazy name from their country it's exotic. But because it evolved from the black community it's ghetto.... Nothing personal it's just something I've been thinking about.

JMHO, the difference is that the foreigner with the crazy name can actually tell you what their name means. Traditionally the name given to a child had a significant meaning behind it. First and last names spoke volumes about families, futures, occupations, etc. Whereas a name like Qwanetha has no significance or meaning. In many instances during conversation I've asked why a person chose a name for their child and the parents couldn't say. I also know of many parents who needed help spelling their child's name. One even refused to change her daughter's spelling. her daughter's name is Vagina pronounced by the parents Va-gee-nuh. So, it may not be fair but I think that is why some of these names are hated on. On average, those who have had a different type of life experience carefully research and select their child's name because it will be the child's for life. BTW, I can't see the pics so I have not been influenced by any images.

Not trying to be funny, but when I see hair like that (and I have only ever seen it online, we don't have that here), I think "unemployed". Like, you can't possibly have a steady, legal job at any decent place with hair like that if it's not a VERY temporary style. I know jail is a BIG leap from that though. Just my two cents.

Sorry I cracked up, lol. I know there's plenty of social, cultural, and racial issues that could bs discussed I just can't do it. These women look like damn crazy fools and I'm someone who even LIKES punk hairstyles.

I think much of the issue is a combination of things. I can't think of any intelligent person who considers a head of natural hair on the same line as a woman with a rooster shaped weave with tracks exposed. Nor is a name made up out of thin air comparable to a foreigner who's name seems 'funny' who actually has a name based off culture, family, and language. As someone with a traditional African name I'd be offended to be put in the same boat as any of these goofballs.

Come on now...if we can't poke fun and laugh at ourselves while realistically accepting what those women represent and how it reflects us as a whole then were really further behind than is good for us.

Also I'm calling liar on anyone who'd turn around, see Pinky or jacked Nicki Minaj in the check out line behind them and have to fight NOT to laugh.

there's a difference in laughing at someone well put together walking proud w/ crazy hair (cuz for sure sure, i laugh at spectacles... quite loudly in fact)
and launching at a collection of women looking like someone sat on them just before their mug shot. most people would not look attractive in their mug shots. these images were chosen specifically because the women are looking a mess and that to me is just wrong. it's not about their hair. some of the captions were about how ugly they were. so really? we're laughing and pointing at ugly darkies now?

not ok in my book. let the women be, they are low enough in the world.

there are plenty of other options available to laugh at whack installs, where it would be the installs that are the jokes, not the women themselves... that's the difference.

So true! I lived in Georgia for two years and I was like YES finally I see this creativity and hair color variation in Black hair! Besides, I always loved having my hair dyed with some "crazy" color (usually pink or blue) so that attracted me at times. Hmm, but I actually like their hairstyles/color play so I'd probably be looking like "awesome color," rather than choking back laughter...Maybe that's just me.

This might end up being a mistake but I think I'd like to figure this out. A mug shot photo can end up being ironic and humorous for a number of reasons. If I were on another website I'd see a collection of white individuals in mug shots wearing stupid shirts or with something about them meant to rouse laughter. I don't think any white patron of the website would be offended by the choice of white individuals as subject matter. In this case this is a black hair forum predominantly of women (if not completely) hence the subjects will relate to something relevant to the site. I think the women's race isn't so relevant as the ludicrous matter in which they look. Would these hair styles be more or less funny to you if the women pictured were of another race?

Hmmm, I think that requires some assumption on what the viewer is laughing at. I only paid attention to those whack installs, I did not even really notice anything else of the women till individuals tried to defend them. If these were a collection of white women dressed and styled exactly the same I'd have still laughed. I think part of the humor is in being able to chuckle at aspects of Black American culture while not saying this makes these women or this joke exclusive from how other people/races/or groups can look silly at inopportune moments.

Really?!!! Taking it to the next level. It's not that serious. We're laughing and pointing at ridiculous looking women (some ugly, some not). Would it be better if they were light-skinned.

What makes them low in the world? Being dark? That sounds like your own personal problem. I don't know any dark-skinned women (including myself) that feels low in this world.

When I initially posted this thread, I was only thinking about hair, not race. Shoot, I am a dark-skinned woman myself with nappy hair, so why would I be pointing fun at their race and gender?

I also thought it was interesting how the title of the email I received "Weave Got To Do Better" tied into doing better with their hair and their lives since these were all criminals with bad weaves.

And I saw a poster mention how creative hair styling is apart of our Black heritage and African roots.... get out of here! There's a difference between creativity and crazy. I'm Black and this type of weave-wearing has NOTHING to do with creativity in my Black heritage or African roots. Most Africans have creative and unique braided or twisted hair styles with some accessories, not crazy colored weaves that do not represent any type of significant culture.
