We are killing our hair....one weave at a time

Anyway I was just in the hair store yesterday and the irony of it all really hit me. 99% of the women coming in there where either buying weave or replacing the one the already had. My mind couldn't help but wander off and think about how their hair looked under it all

I just love how everyone is running clean over my post that state this has nothing to do with weave bashing, weaves vs non weaves or none of the other stuff. I just love how this thread went completely off topic and I feel like nobody really read the OP..... I ..just...love it ~side-eye~

It definitely got off topic but I think some of the responses were on point in regards to your statement about how the hair looks underneath and how some women use weaves as protective styles vs. those who are hiding damage and not caring it. These convo's drift a little because after a while we're responding less to the OP's point and more to each other.

But girl, lol, you made a thread entitled "We are KILLING our hair...one weave at a time.". I read your OP which was neutral but the title is very charged and just inviting drama thus you'll get the "All weaves are terrible things and only speak to how sad some women are" responses. Some folks see an opening and run with it.

You have to be aware that some folks have a monkey on their back they've just been dying to get off one way or another, lol.

It would be cool to get a self install thread on this forum like there is on BHM. I would love to learn how to install my own weaves. It would save me some money and I can switch up my looks more often.

I love weaves. I can change the length, style, color in a blink of an eye without any damage to my hair underneath! I have a serious hair pulling problem and as well as hand in hair syndrome. Until I can deal with this issue, I would be ruining all of my progress.

I will be in there every day! Im currently wearing a wig a made my self but if we get a thread going i will be more than welcome to do my sew in so we all can be together for the ride!

Not really though. I have visted that site LHF and white women there do pretty much the same things that we do... ill say the hair care practices are new for black women but I won't say our hair is harder to deal with

I actually find it easier..WHEN YOU ***KNOW*** what to do with it. Knowledge of your individual hair is key. And easier on the pockets once you know what your hair likes.(PJism not included.)

I agree weave is killing a lot of women's hair. Flip on a reality show and you will see some jacked up hair with extensions on women of all races.

Yes, white women wear weave...but why is it so tough to admit that this is a completely different ball of wax when compared to black women? They are not running out in record numbers to get the latest afro kinky texture. Does a white woman wearing a weave validate weave/wig usage by black women?

Yes, our hair is more difficult to manage...we are trying to manage it to fit a certain aesthetic. If we were the dominant culture and highly textured hair was the pinnacle...would, it be considered "hard to manage?” I doubt it.
To the “it’s just hair” brigade…if it was just hair…people would not have an issue wearing their own...even it was damaged, long, short, kinky, relaxed, etc.

If people wear weaves/wigs and they like it, then I love it...but it is what it is. Let me leave it at that so I don’t ruffle any cuticles.

I believe this is the key to the "illusion" of 'difficult to manage' hair. It is difficult when you try to make it do things out side of what it naturally does. I think it's fine to change up from time to time, but the problem comes when we want to constantly keep a certain 'flair about our hair.' To be more acceptable to the CEO's.(Understandable, but objectively speaking it is key.)

I dont think its the weave i just think its people not being properly educated on hair care.
And yes i think that their hair is just as tore up as most of us who dont know proper hair care while maintaining a weave. Funny because i used to always think because they were rich they could afford the best treatments and care. But it just comes down to whether you are willing to practice good hair care and not just have a stylist slap a weave on your hair, go about your business, and not manage and maintain hair underneath.

This has always puzzled me to no end. i.e. Noami Campbell allegedly. AA
