Versus | In Defense of the Weave: Weaves V. Natural Hair

Are most naturals anti weave? This is news to me. Also I am a natural and I wear weaves occasionally as a protective style.

So as a former weave wearing sister, I say former because this is the LAST time that I am going to sew ANYTHING into my head again, I will always have love for how those Indian.Chinese.Russian.Brazillian locks fell past my shoulders and I could shake my head like I was in a Rio commercial.

I am always going to defend the weave wearing Sista because I love them…the Sistas AND the weaves!!

I have embraced the “natural hair” phenomenon. And I am in love with how it makes me feel, but I believe that all of the years that Natural hair was looked down upon has made natural hair sistas feel a little uppity now that the Natural look is more in style. And talking about Natural Hair sometimes makes women on both sides argue like the Jigaboo’s versus the Wannabee’s in Spike Lee’s School Daze. In the same way that we have other REAL issues to discuss, they should have been headed to class!

I am in defense of the weave wearing Sistas. Here is why:

Just because you wear a weave:

You are not less of a Sista
You are not trying to be white
You are not disrespecting your roots or your natural hair
You are not confused
Does not mean that you are not ALSO a Natural Hair Sista
Wearing a weave may be an indication that:

You may be protecting hair that chemicals have annihilated
You maybe exercising your options as a versatile Sista and you may not want to dye your natural hair that sandy honey bronze that you look so good in
You like the ease that weaves can offer you while exercising and enjoying an active lifestyle
You are also not ready to go natural yet, you have been weaved up for 15 years!
You just like weaves-and that is perfectly okay!
As Black Women there are so many issues that divide us, skin color, class, education, married versus not, do not let weather you have extensions in your hair become another irrelevant divisive tool to make us cut our eyes at each other. Hair weaves are like a tube of lipstick in your favorite color raspberry red or like a pair of high heel shoes that you feel sexy in. They merely enhance ones standard of beauty. In the same way that Natural Hair Sistas feel offended that Weave Wearing Sistas throw those silky locks in their faces, Weave Wearing Sistas are now getting the brunt from Natural Hair Sistas throwing those big coils in their faces.

Let us embrace all of the ways that we choose to showcase our beauty, one of the most awesome things about being a Black Woman is that I can be so versatile. From an Angela Davis Afro on Monday to Blonde waist-length goldilocks on Wednesday night Bible Study!

And not an ounce less a Black Woman.

In defense of-my beauty.

I agree with the post :yep:

Is this really an issue? I mean dayum, how many "issues" are we supposed to have about hair and how we choose to wear/style it?

ITA about embracing our beauty.

I will never defend weaves because the vast majority of the ones I see irl look awful. It's not about natural either because healthy relaxed hair looks a lot better.

The excessive amount of times she used the word "sista" annoyed me.

I have seen plenty of drool worthy sew-ins and wigs, but they are not for me. I have nothing against them though

I'm not a big wig/weave fan but right about now I am ready to just cornrow my hair and plop some Remy down on top of it so I don't have to be bothered.

Mentally, I associate black women with weaves. I almost always expect to see a black woman with a weave that I rarely bat an eye. In my current city, it is nothing short of a miracle to see a decent looking weave that I don't even expect it.

I seriously doubt this is even an issue as weaves and wigs are so prevalent.

Can I just say I think it is so interesting how many white women I now see wearing "extensions" or lace front wigs and like no one says anything.

Personally I like wigs, I buy them because they do what my hair cannot for whatever reason and I am to cheap for proper weave maintenance. I think whatever makes you feel like a woman is what you should do I am just annoyed this is an issue.

.

They are wearing hair that mimics their own. When white women start wearing giant afro wigs or kinky weave, then it would be a fair comparison.

I saw them gluing tracks of this plastic looking blond weave onto this white woman's hair in one of those mall stalls. It was only a matter of time before janky weaves became mainstream. Black women are definitely trendsetters .

Hopefully, the prices of the better weaves would come down and people will quit it with the plastic crap.

People love to entertain the topic of Black Women's hair so much. Why is that? I feel like our hair is becoming some type of circus side-show. Just do what you wish and be happy.

BTW, I plan on getting a weave soon. A kinky curly weave. It has nothing to do with me trying to fake it or not loving my real hair. Sometimes you just want something different and non-permanent.

Yes! I wonder how much of this is all about what's really going on INSIDE of the other lady's head. Stop being so self-conscious! Ain't nobody judging you!!

I'm really getting tired of people pitting naturals against the daggone world. It's really NOT that serious! A lot of us just wanna rock our natural hair in peace, we're not worried about what's happening on another lady's head.:perplexed

I'm gonna continue to rock my wigs!

I am not into wigs at all...but to each her own ;-). I couldn't care less what another chick wanna do with her hair!!
