I have seen the Vaseline threads popping up lately and really am curious to see the stats of ladies using Vaseline on their hair.

Sometimes thread pop and and some might think it's a LHCF norm. I saw a quote that said something like Vaseline is the new in thing. I thought, hmmmm, it's not for me.

So ladies, has this become a norm???? Are you using Vaseline? What are your thoughts?

I with you Sis...I would never put Vaseline in my hair

This is why I will not use it on my hair. It attracts dirt and lint like a dangone magnet.

One time, a friend recommended I use it on my boots to make them shiny. After about an hour of walking around they looked like I had been stomping around in the dessert or on a beach or something... and I was indoors the whole time!!!:lachen:

That's EXACTLY why I don't use it on any part of me.

No I don't use it, but I do use other products that contain petrolatum to seal my ends, so I might as well be using it

I was gonna ask why pink lotion is such a no-no if straight vaseline is okay... but then I looked up the ingredients.

Woooooow :look:

Wow, all it needs is a few sulfates in there, and it would have every ingredient you're not supposed to put in hair. Yeesh.

I tried it on wet hair for a braidout on friday and my hair dried suprisingly soft and shiny, not greasy ( I do remove excess product with a towel after I braid by squeezing the braids). Can't say I'm a regular user because I've only just tried it.

HOnestly, I believe vaseline is just another hair bandwagon some may jump up on or just a temporary phase. I remember growing up and watching my aunt use vaseline on my cousin's hair and it always left her hair so dry and I remember my momma talking about my aunty to my other aunty about how she know she should use grease on her child's hair, lol(ahhh...the irony)....my head was a grease ball, for my momma used that blue grease or red can grease while my cousin's mom used vaseline on her head and it constantly looked sooo dry. Her hair was always short while mine still grew long. I tried using it on my ends but it left my ends dry the next day but had a greasy feel to it. It attracts lint and doesn't let in any additional moisture once the hair needs to be moisturized again...but hey....if works for some, then I won't knock the hustle...but definitely not for me. Plus its too thick and globby.:nono:

It's one of the world's most effective mosturizers and great for my ends.

Respectfully, from author Paula Beguon's ("Don't Go To the Cosmetics Counter Without Me") website:

"Vaseline is pure petrolatum. For some unknown and unsubstantiated reason, petrolatum has attained a negative image in regard to skin care, despite solid research to the contrary. Topical application of petrolatum can help the skin’s outer layer recover from damage, reduce inflammation, and generally heal the skin..."

But, of course, not everything is for everybody.

You are funny. I hadn't used Vaseline in my hair for over 15 years. But the latest threads made me give it a try. My hair was like, chick are you crazy!!!

I kept having visions of "Coming to American" in my head. You know where the family had the Jherri curls and got up off the sofa and the juice was on the sofa.:nono: Also, if my man wants to run his fingers through my hair, I dont want him to come out with a Vaseline coated hand. :ohwell:

Anyway, after trying it again, I remembered why I stopped using it. First we don't need it. There are so many oils and butter out there that do the the same thing. And secondly, it's attracts dirt and lint (like Bint said) and it's hard to wash out! I will pass on this one.

It is difficult to wash out. I read plenty of information about using Dawn and the like on hair to remove it....

Harsh shampoos are in my past... So I would not use it - or any other petroleum derivative.

I can get anything out of my hair with baking soda. (I am not into harsh poos either.) Even backing soda wasn't getting it out! I had to wash my hair 3 times with poo and 3 times with baking soda before I got it all out!

*I love your siggy pic.*

Thanks mama!!!

I use castile - so I know I would not take the chance. I don't know if CON would get Vaseline out...

maybe for my feet at night (so that I can avoid dirt sticking to me) although I don't want it getting on my sheets, but not for my hair!

I'm in the minority but I use it and love it.

I use it on me and both my DD"s hair.

We have no problems with lint or dirt and it washes out just as easily as anything else I have put in our hair.

I use it 2x a week at the most but I imagine if use it everyday it would get gommy.

It is now a staple in my arsenal, not that I use a lot of stuff anyway.

It makes our hair soft and VERY shiny. Definatly a keeper!

I don't use vaseline no....but occasionally I will use hair grease and I love it. (just a certain kind by Motions though) The shine is off the scale.

I use it sometimes on the last 2 inches of my hair right before I bun up. I also use it sometimes on my nape right before I bun up. The trick is to make ure your ends (and only use it on your ends) are still wet. I don't worry about lint because my hair is in a bun. I dont even use that much. Maybe enough to cover my fingertip.

no thanks. i hate most oils and greases in my hair. i dont even like using it on my lips

Correction: I also use it on my ends to coat/protect them while relaxing...that's all though....for real this time lol

my bad

For those who say it's hard to wash out and attracts dirt and lint..... really.... how much are/were you using?

Just used it today before I went to the salon for a touch-up. After reading all the posts on here about vaseline as a protectant, I decided to give it a try. I melted about a half a teaspoon down, and applied it to the previously relaxed hair. Before I could finish appying it, it solidified into a lighter creamier texture that was not so easy to apply to my remaining strands(????) Maybe I should have just put it on straight from the jar. I have read from the pros that using it before perming will help to strenghten, protect and thicken the hair ends.
Time will tell on that one...

It washed out rather easily for me with a shampoo bar. I put some more in last night for a new braidout today.

I dont use actual Vaseline but I do use petroleum based products. When I first started going to hair boards I stopped using petroleum and mineral oil based products only because they got such a bad rap, not because they ever harmed my hair. Since then I have learned to use what works for my hair, no matter what is said about the product or ingredients. My hair has thrived while using some of the most infamous products on this board, so i'll continue to stick to what works for me, even if im the only one using it.
