Are there any recommendations for mild yet moisturizing and effective:

1. Shampoos
2. Conditioners
3. Styling aids
4. Maintenance aids
5. Hair styles

My daughter's hair is 1/2 way down her back when stretched and is very thick. I typically part her hair in quarters and make 4 pony tails OR I will part down the middle and make two pony tails. I am not good with braiding. Her hair line is fragile. I have her sleep in a satin bonnet nightly but it is pulled down to her forehead.

Any suggestions to help keep her hair moisturized and neat would be great.

maybe with all that hair she just needs to use grown folks products
for maintanance you might try natural things like olive oil coconut oil
shea butter etc

maybe to keep moisture you should conditioner wash and only shampoo
every 4th time or something

i wouldnt surge her hairline because that stuff irritates alot of peoples skin
maybe just avoid braiding that area too tight

as far as hairstyles i would keep an eye out for ads with kids in them and copy them, try 2ponys, 1pony, a couple of twists instead of ponys hey my motto is never too young for a bun!

OFF TOPIC: can you tell i was trying to copy the lady in your avatar?

My 20 month old has a head full of thick hair. She was born with a ton. It is very challenging because she's not old enough to sit still. I try to do her hair at night while she sleeps and sometimes I'm successful.

Stretched I'd say she has about 10 - 11 inches of hair that shrinks to about 3 or 4. You can imagine the detangling nightmare. Most times I let her rock a fro. I'll spritz it with a moisturizer when I can get her to stand still (or I'll just sneak up on her!) The only time I detangle is when she's in the bathtub. Usually I'll just get in with her, soak her hair and load with with a conditioner (suave or vo5) I then use a wide tooth comb and then finer as it loosens up. I find that the tangles and clumps are not match for the water and conditioner. I wash afterwards with something gentle and natural (I'm using herbnlife royal rinse right now. . .it's mostly black soap and aloe vera.)

I put her hair into a high puff to dry.

The hairline is fragile because their heads are still growing. The edges are always going to be shorter and more fragile until they mature. I don't brush dry or over manipulate. She gets treated like a superstar when rocking her fro anyway. So I let her be the star she is most of the time. I detangle in the bath maybe once a week or biweekly. I might do plaits this week.

I use shea butter and coconut oil on her hair. Daily doctor or a glycerine spritz for moisture. That's about it. I'm not about to expose my baby girl to all sorts of crazy chems. Daily doctor is as unnatural as it gets.

Thank you both for your advice. I am not good with cornrowing so I don't do that but I am interested in a style that is easy to pull together in the morning b/c I have to be out by 6:30 am.

What I have found is, if I pull her hair up in 1 pony puff after washing and dressing it, it is murder trying to detangle once it dries b/c it is like it puffs up on itself so the roots are detangled from the original wash but the ends are clumped together. So I have to handle her hair like silk b/c of course, before you even touch her head she says it hurts or I am hurting her and I definitely do not want to put her through what I went through as a child getting my hair done.

I want her hair to continue to grow in healthy and thick so I don't want to put so many products in it that is jeopardizes her hair health. I also take her to get her hair trimmed about every 3 months and she is due for another one now b/c her last trim was in October where I instructed them to trim off 1 inch of hair b/c they were her original baby hairs that were raggedy.

How often do you get your child's hair trimmed?

I know what you mean! My daughters both have long thick here (their pictures are in my fotki). I use the same stuff I use on my own hair. I use EVOO, and mango butter. The older one (7 years old) has waistlength hair that is texturized. For her I have to use something with a little more weight. So on her hair, I use african pride hair dress in addition to the other two.

Hope this helps!

check out my baby girl's pictures in my hair. Her hair is like WHOA!! It is a battle doing her hair all the time but with using the right products I can easily tame her hair. She will be 4 in July. Here are the products I use for her (mostly the same same things I use):

1. Shampoos-Nexxuss Therappe once a month
2. Conditioners-CW ever weekly using Sedal Anti sponge and V05 Strawberries and Cream
3. Styling aids-Let's Jam
4. Maintenance aids- Oil Sheen
5. Hair styles-I alternate with a ponytail after airdrying and doing twists and braids

TThreat08 I really liked the way you styled your daughters' hair. Very cute. My daughter has thick hair like that and I don't want her to be afraid to get it combed so I am workign really hard to make sure I am gentle.

Thanks for sharing.

1. Shampoo - I use diluted baby shampoo on my daughter and I shampoo only once.
2. Conditioner - Aubrey Organics all the way baby! Softens like nobody's business. That denman brush glides right thru. Leave in - Giovanni direct leave in conditioner. I condition wash her hair on Wed to keep in moist.
3. Styling aids -Avocado butter I got from fromnaturewithlove.com. It's softer than shea and has just the right amount of weight to it to lengthen the curls. Can be a tad bit greasy if you use too much
4. Maint - Bottle of water I use to spray her plait (i never comb her hair dry) and then apply a little giovanni direct leave in conditioner followed by avocado butter.
5. Hair styles - plaits. I don't use accessories unless it's a special occasion and if I do they are most certainly hair friendly. I may use little clip barettes on the ends but it's rare.

My daugter's hair is the same way, but not as long. I went back to basics and stopped using products on her hair. Now, I simply spritz it with water every day and pick it out with my fingers. That actually has made a huge difference. Every now and then, I co wash it with Mane and Tail. She has mostly 4A with some 3c in front, and I've noticed that she has less shrinkage now. Maybe water was the magic potion!

Wow ladies thanks for all the feedback. Today I parted my dd's hair in 6 sections, used the ball barrettes and fixed them up, 2-strand twisted them and then applied some WGO to each one and twisted along w/ some CD's Marguerite's Magic. She will be due for another hair wash by Saturday (I typically washed every 2 weeks) and I plan to use my newly ordered Elucence to CWC wash it.

Wow, I could just hug all of the ladies who gave such detailed steps. I am going through a meltdown with my DD's hair. She was getting it cornrowed every 3 weeks and it looked great but I was uncomfortable with having her hair blowdried each time. Do you think that is excessive heat? It didn't seem damaged but it didn't seem like it was really growing much either. It's been stuck at mid back for about a year now. Anyway, I'm going to try all of your tips too. So far, I know that my little one's hair loves CON, Paul Mitchell-The Conditioner and Coconut Oil.

TThreat08- what do you use to get your natural daughter's ends so smooth when you braid it? Other than loads of conditioner, what kind of comb or brush? This is where my DD's hair starts to look a mess. I can't seem to smooth down the ends. They aren't damaged but when it dries they do look ragged. When I do small braids I can finger curl/smooth the ends but I don't have the time and she doesn't have the patience to get too many braids at each sitting.

TIA

Rocky

all of you ladies seem to know your stuff cause every one of you has mentioned your girls hair to be long. i have a 2yr old that was born with a head full of hair but lost most of it due to cradle cap. it has grown alottle but is at a stand still. i've looked at your regimens and noticed no one uses grease on the scalp. my baby hair is almost at her ear and would like for it to grow at least to her shoulders, but will settle for at least close to her chin for 1st goal. don't get me wrong i will not go to the extreme of perming her hair as a church member said, she's too young for that.i don't want to burn it up .just gro it. she has alot of shrinkage.
I GUESS THE QUESTION IS DO YOU ALL USE ANY GREASE ON SCALP AND IF SO WHAT TYPE. you can post here or pm me THANKS.

I don't use grease on her scalp at all. I don't do anything special to her scalp really. I do have a neighbor who washes her infants hair and then puts olive oil on her hair, scalp and face to moisturize her. Her hair is growing in nicely.

I was going to ask the same thing. I keep using all kinds of grease and I wonder if that is doing my girls hair more harm then good. Right now we are using Indian Hemp. The only problem with that is the littel particles (we call them herbs and spices) stay in her hair and make CW very hard. She seems to have such build up. I want to stop shampooing her hair so much. I have decided to stick with Nexxus for her and me. I don't want to perm or even texturize her hair, I love her texture but she is going on 9 and her hair is short so she is starting to want big girl styles. She wants a "doobie" so badly. I am having a hard time getting her hair to grow longer too.

I worry about that too. I am very good at cornbraids and I try to keep my my daughters hair in braids. I always blow dry it before I braid it, it is just easier this way. I use Salerm 21 on her hair and I apply Alter Ego Crn drops to her scalp before I blowdry. We do this every other week. I can let it airdry but her hair after airdrying gets tangled no matter how much moisturizer I put in it. I tried doing the 2 strand twist while wet and I let her hair airdry, she hated it and cried because it looked so short from the shrinkage. I had to have a long talk with her, she thought the girls would make fun of her at school. She came home that day and she said they said it was cute. Go figure. She still wants me to blowdry it for now on or Maxi Glide it straight.

I don't grease my 20 month olds scalp. I just got some virgin coconut cream from fnlw.com. I plan to focus on that and a spritz as her moisture.

Basically:

1 - 2x per week I wash or cw with vo5 strawberries and cream
detangle with v05
oil and brush
put into ponypuff or pigpuffs.

when i think if it I reup the spritz/oil.

I'm planning to

CW-W once a week.
Detangle with vo5

apply curly custard for moisture
or
spritz with daily doctor

lock in moisture with coconut cream or a butter (hemp, wheatgerm, aloe, etc.)

braid or puff.

Taya,
My daughter wasn't born with much hair which was quite a surprise to hubby and i because we both came out with "helmets" of hair. After her hair still didn't do much at 1.5 y.o. I created a concoction of WGO, MSM and water. I heated it all together and used it as a hair moisturizer. I guess I used it everyday, massaging it in. Her hair took off after that. Plus, I bought a couple yards of satin and lined everything she laid her head on, car seat, stroller, bed.....

For the next 2 years I let her hair grow into a THICK fro' to minimize stress. By her third birthday she had lots of hair and pressure of family and friends finally caused me to start "doing" her hair.

Looking back, WGO or some light oil would've probably been enough to use to keep her hair from getting dry.
HTH

Thanks, and as I said before you all know your stuff and I will try some of these ideas one @ time.
