To Lye or No-Lye? What relaxer do you recommend?

Which is better - I was all set to try and find a Lye relaxer but after reading up on it some more I am not sure it's a good idea. What relaxer do you recommend, I would like to try one at home?

MILD Lye relaxers for me all the way. No way am i risking dryness by using a no-lye relaxer. I have a sensitive scalp so i make sure to base my scalp really well and to only use a mild strength. Right now my fave is Silk elements. so far i've only seen it at Sally's.

Well, I had hopped on the lye bandwagon for a minute. I used elasta mild the first time and applied it myself, which was hiliarious cuz it came out looking like ish, which I blamed on myself and the fact that it was mild. So the next time I bought the regular strength and had a professional do it and it still didn't get my roots straight so I am back to no-lye, for now. Hope I didn't do any damage making the switch back..oh well time will tell! But for those that suffer with dry hair due to no-lye, using a shampoo every once in a while that removes the calcium buildup should help if not solve the problem, I will bump a great thread on the subject for you..

Ditto..SILK ELEMENTS MILD has been good for my hair. I've had only one bad incident due to shampoo lady not neutralizing well{ouch!!}..otherwise no problem. I am thinking of doing my next touch-up with REGULAR because I want to remember the difference but should I not like the effect it'll be back to MILD formula SILK ELEMENTS. SE is a good relaxer, inexpensive and always available at SALLYS. I love the movement it gives..I had straight hair using MOTIONS and GENTLE TREATMENT NO-LYE but my hair was stiff, broke easily. I'm thinking how I was not aware of the need for scheduled deep conditioning, leave-ins, oil heat treatments, coddling my ends, etc. while I was using NO-LYE so these methods may have kept me on NO-LYE.

I agree with CaribbeanDiva; I would recommend mild lye. I  Mizani for fine/color treated hair (mild strength). There is no burning, it doesn't relax bone straight (which I prefer) and my hair comes out moisturized, silky and strong after I use it. Regardless what you use, make sure you take care of your scalp.

I have found that I can use nothing by Affirm Sensitive Scalp relaxer on my hair or I will go through the roof. The salon tried Mizani before and I want to about cry from the pain.
