THYROID DISORDERS AND HAIR GROWTH UPDATE

Anyone have an update?
Asking because of my own battle now with hyperthyroidism , Tapazol, Tanormin and damaged hair. Just cut it all even in an effort to get rid of the damage and grow it in normally but a lil apprehensive on whether it will grow back now. And if it does I am worried it will be damaged still due to the medical issues. Anyone can offer help or advice please do.

Hey MzSouth....I'm in the same boat - Hyperthyroidism. However, I elected not to manage it with pills on a continuing basis, but to take the 'one-time' solution of the radiation pill. I'm waiting on my first blood work results 4 weeks post the treatment. Prior to that, my hair had been thinning, especially my front hair line. My longest strands are BSL so my hair was starting to look sort of pitiful (at least in my eyes).

I'm on a 'combat' regimen now though - I went to a black dermatologist, and he gave me specific shampoo & conditioner to use. I'm wearing mostly protective styles, and using Nioxin Follicle Booster & a cortisone steroid cream prescribed by the dermatologist on my hairline. I'm drinking water, and taking all the major pills to help internally - Biotin, Evening Primrose, Flaxseed, Multi-Vitamin, etc. So far, it's working. The breakage and hair loss is minimal to almost none, my hairline is slowly coming back, and though my hair was always still growing and I was retaining length, I'm hoping my regimen will 'thicken' up my hair. I even switched to a birth control pill with less progestin (leads to DHT & hair loss) & more estrogen. Hon, I'm willing to do ANYTHING & EVERYTHING to keep my strands on my head! lol And thank God that even though I felt my hair was looking pitiful, other people weren't really aware of the problem - they've said my hair is looking great & getting long these days!

Alpha Female,

Thank you so much for responding lady. Glad to see someone is overcoming this whole situation. I may do the radiation pill also. But I see that going hypo is one of the risks. Right now my hyperthyroidism is controlled but of course it is only due to the pills. As of now I am waiting to do the iodine uptake and from there we will see. Hoping that I don't have the do the biopsy that's my worst fear.
I guess I never thought the pills would have this affect. I'm planning to adopt a regimen and keep at it in hopes that it will help. Trying Sulfur 8 and Glovers to help with growth. Wondering if a shampoo and conditioner specifically marketed for damaged hair will be of benefit or will it still be damaged as long as I am on the pills. I read about the Nioxin but not sure if it would help with the actual loss or just make it thicker. I truly believe I am going to ask my Endo to refer me to a Derm.
Again thank you so much your info was very helpful :yep:.

 don't really know much about thyroid disorders but i just started taking Sea Kelp and when I read up on it it says its got high levels of iodine which helps "regulate" thyroid activity and one of the benefits of which is hair growth, you may want to check that? HTH

TSH Blood test will let you know if you have it. For those with hyperthyroid, I also have this and I hate taking pills because they also have a side effect, however, I was taking glutathione which I think regulated it, this is good for autoimmune disorders. When I was taking that I actually had normal readings, I stopped taking it and back to high reading, I will start again, this time the NAC since glutathione is so expensive and NAC helps the body to increase its absorption or make it. Any hoo I will then take a test again in another 3 months to see if it is normal again. By the way seakelp is not good for hyperthyroidism (hypo yes) as it is high in iodine which is not what we want. The good news is this has not affected my hair. Will keep you updated when I do my test in another 3 months.

Thanks for the advice miss lady but yeah as someone further done said it actually is not good for hyperthyroidism. The hair growth sounds good though . But the iodine would definatley kill me over and probably make this goiter explode. It would def raise my levels back up and I never want to feel that again :nono:

how does one know if they have hyperthyroidism?

Test are the definative answer but before hand you start to feel lil things. For me my muscles were weak and shakey. I would get out of breath just sitting still and lets not even talk about walking. Long story short I went to the doc for an excuse for missing work (faking) and she saw the goiter. Upon taking my pulse it was over 120 beats per min resting. So they figured that's what it was. From there we went into the test. But lucily the pills have that all under control. Now I just have to battle the hair loss.

Excuse my ignorance but are these supplements you found on your own or can you get them from your Endo. I will consider any viable option but of course I would consult him first. I think I went the pill route first just because my main concern was to feel better. Also when you hear the word cancer (i.e it could be caused by cancer or blah blah blah but cancer is the least possibility) all you think about is the word cancer. I wasn't hinking bout hair loss and nothing else. I do have hope though that I can get the hair loss under control. My mom went through this with dialysis, high blood pressure etc. Her hair is just as beautiful as it was before.
