The word on Maxiglide...

...simple question: is it really worth the high price? I'm looking to stretch my perm a few weeks longer and i really need something to keep my roots (relatively) straight. Who of you here uses this and does it really work? Also, is it found in a BSS like Sally's? Thanks in advance.:)

I think it's a good starter iron. The steam burst technology is what impressed me the most. But I'm someone who's always looking for the next best thing. I'm probably going to sell my maxi so I can purchase a SEDU or H2pro.

I think mine was worth every dolla' spent. That says alot coming from me, cuz I consider myself "hair cheap" (don't spend over $5 on products, etc).

The "combs/teeth" is what I'm mostly excited about... I flat ironed while my hair was dry curly yet I only had to do 1 pass to get my hair silky straight.

I love mine. I use it after my rollersets, and it gets my hair SUPER straight and really keeps it that way.

The problem? It's addicting. I've been using it 2x per week now, and I'm starting to see some breakage.

Out of the many many irons I've owned, this is the best one because of the steam function.

I love my Maxiglide and think that it is worth the money. I know that you can purchase it at Bed Bath & Beyond or Linens & Things... haven't seen it at Sallys.

I really like mine alot. With that said, I wish it wasn't so wide because I have small hands and I have to use both hands to use it.

I bought mine at Linens and Things.

ITA w/ everything Peachtree said! Maxiglide is worth every penny for me and I'm cheap too, lol. I can get my hair straighter than a relaxer w/ just one pass of the iron and on setting one.

Girl Me Too

I see they are only 79.95 at Bed Bath and Linens n things...

Too bad u can't use it on short hair. I will have to buy an iron to tide me over til my hair grows.:ohwell:

:look: I just went and bought a maxiglide...do most of you use it on rollerset or airdryed hair? which is probably healthier for the hair?

So true. I'm using mine once a week to help fight tangle ends, but I find myself thinking about using it more. I've given myself a routine now that I hope will reduce the urge.

How do you think it would do on natural, nappy hair? Do you think the little teeth will get tangled up in it?

If you use it after a fresh wash, with detangled hair, you will be fine. I airdry in braids. Also, I find that Fantasia IC Heat Protectant (pink bottle), helps to fight the tangles.

You need to make sure you don't use high heat, as it can fry your hair. Depending on how straight you want it, it's very tempting to turn up the heat. Try not to do that. Instead, try to find a lower temp your hair can tolerate.

With each use, I use a very low temp and go up only if I need to. Out of 10, I don't go higher than 3.

So what are you doing with your hair at that level? Straightening new growth? Curious.:look:

I'm not relaxed, I mostly bun and my hair is very coily. I'm having trouble with my ends. They ball up and break off terribly no matter what I seem to do, resulting in no retention in over a year and I lost some length. I'm struggling to maintain APL.

The first time I used the Maxiglide to just to wear my down in a pressed style, but even with a little reversion on a VERY humid day, I noticed that my ends were mostly tangle free. So now I use it once a week or up to 10 days, after deep conditioning or protein treatments and airdrying. I'm trimming away any damage I see and go back to bunning and oiling almost daily. After 3-4 days, I wash (CO wash or Oil wash), because that's as long as I can go without cleaning my scalp and hair and day 7 or 10, I start all over again.

I'm seeing an improvement so far.

ETA: I don't try to press bone straight.

Thanks for that. Sorry, didn't know if you were relaxed or not. The only- only reason I want a Maxiglide is to use on my roots. I hate my hair bone straight. I do rollersets to keep it curly when I'm not wearing it up. If I purchased the Maxi I'd just use it enough to tame that new growth, which is a beast coming up by the 7th week post relaxer.

Remember, don't steam at the roots. You'll scorch your scalp. Don't forget to use a protectant either. I hope our ends will loooooove the steam as much as mine.

What's a protectant? If you throw a name at me I'll be happy to go out and buy it.

Thanks for the response. I'll keep that in mind if I decide to get one.

Guys I have a question -- I don't own a maxiglide (i have a sedu - which I love but I am trying to reduce direct heat by rollersetting my hair) but I was just wondering about using the steam feature or using this product on hair not completely dry -- I thought someone posted that this was damaging to the hair because the steam/heat combo causes "bubbles" to form in the shaft which lead to damage down the road. I am not sure at all and it has been some time since I thought I read this. I only mention it becasue the goal of this forum is to help and encourage others. Please tell me that I am wrong -- I have a friend that wants to purchase the maxiglide and I have no personal experience to share.

This is a little long, but here's my personal experience.

There was a very old thread about using a flatiron on wet hair. If I remember correctly, some members knew of people that used heat that way, but the hair was nearly soaking wet and those individuals had varying degrees of success or failure.

I'm a sucker and tried it a couple of times and I did see the "bubble" damage after the second time. So I stopped.

Later, I read (other places) that with a proper professional flatiron, damp hair had less of the "bubble" damaging effects. I did not try this.

Since Maxiglide is said to be a professional style flatiron, it's supposed to be safer on damp or dry hair and the steam is meant to infuse moisture into the hair. I believe I heard that even the Maximus people say it's better to use on dry hair. I've tried both and prefer it on dry (I'll explain why shortly).

The steam is supposed to be safer, because it's not wetting the hair. It evaporates too quickly. Thus it's not trapping an extrodinary amount of water in your hair the way the "wet method" does.

Why do I prefer the dry hair press? I saw the maximum moisture benefit using the steam of the Maxiglide on dry hair. My hair seemed to only hold the amount of moisture needed. Also, the steam is not constant, so I have the option to press the steam button or not steam. The steam really gave my ends a boost. On damp hair, my hair felt a little spongy and I had a greater (although not total) reversion when the humidity was higher.

Thanks for clearing this up for me. HHG vickyd
