The Ultimate Hardcore No Heat Challenge 2013

I want to join but I just want to make sure I understand. If you opt for the once ever 3 months can you use that pass at any point as long as within a 3 month period you only use heat once? TIA :)

I have been doing great not using heat. I haven't used heat for about 7 months now...I did use the hooded dryer twice within those months just to DC but I see that I really don't need heat to DC. Anywho, 2013 I plan to go hard on not using heat. I want to incorporate more wigs into my regimen!!!

So i did buy the blow dryer i was resisting......bottom line. I learned something new today. My hair HATES twists (big/small) i lost so much hair from washing today it was so scary and sad. I did blow dry using low and warm settings and this is my starting pic for the challenge.

My friend just commented on how thick my hair is and said that she has never seen my hair like this. I attribute it all to no heat. I think I'm going to give away my blow dryer and flat iron so that I won't be tempted to use them. I am in love with my thick hair.

prettybyrd When I saw my hair thicken up from using no heat in 2012, I fell in love with no heat. Thick hair is so addictive, and my hair is shinny too.

@shoapie Yes, the pass can be used anytime as long as there is a three month period between each heat use.

SincerelyBeautiful Wigs work great in the winter, as a stylish way to wear a hat. I like to use a hooded dryer in the winter.

Sunshinebaby At one time my hair hated twist as well. Once I began frequent trims, and baggying I can enjoy twist.

Seamonster, I know right! I'm hooked! Plus, I just read in that Komaza Hair Analysis thread that more protein in the diet can lead to thicker strands! What?!?!

I'm off to GNC this weekend for more protein powder. It's not just for workout recovery anymore!

Thanks Seamonster!

1. which challenge level?

level 1

2. Have you ever done a no heat challenge before?

no. i'm easing myself into it with level 1 lol

3. Do you plan to trim your ends without heat?

I hadn't thought of it but I may trim in the spring

4. Do you know How to Stretch your hair without heat?

Yes. I prefer braidouts and the occasional bantu knot out but I want to try more twistouts and banding my hair.

5. Do you plan to increase your challenge to the ultimate level by protective styling everyday?

No. Knowing me, it'll make me bored and i'll do something drastic like use heat

5a. If not, can you commit to low manipulation styles throughout your challenge?

yes! i'm all about low mani

6. What do you hope to gain from this challenge?

I want to get better at styling my hair. elaborate buns and updos with hair toys and clips, pinned up braidouts etc
I also want to gain thickness. straightening my hair involves a lot of manipulation which weakens and thins my hair if done regularly. I want to drastically reduce the heat and increase the protein and general care so it can reach its thickness potential :D

7. Do you know how to do length checks without heat?

erm..pulling it?

8. Post both a starting length and thickness picture. Pictures are Mandatory to be a member of this challenge
start hair 001.JPG
start hair 008.JPG
the thickness picture is a combed out bantu knot out

9. List your No Heat Regime

co wash a couple of times during the week
shampoo once a week, deep condition with heat and detangle weekly
m&s everyday
buns and braidouts
try to minimise wearing hair out/down
hard protein as per directions and i may incorporate regular henna treatments

I've been eyeing this thread for a while.... I just love my flat iron... Even though she don't love me :(

I flat iron once a month.... That's the only thing kinda bad I do. You can roller set through out this challenge right?

Hardcore.

I did no heat for 2012 so I can do it again.

How do people trim without straightening? I never trim my hair these days, I need to learn:look:

Seamonster my hair hates baggying as well, i think the only style my hair likes for any length of time is cornrows. 7-10 rows is just fine for my fine strands.

Seamonster, i aint messing with NO TWISTS. I'll stick to the good i know. I really hate twists now. Maybe if my hair was shorter. I have fine strands and my ends are thin so i'm working on improving that. I need to dust them before the year ends, maybe then i will see a difference. In the mean time, i'm looking forward to starting the no heat challenge and have to find a way to make my hair behave after washing it.:yep:

freckledface welcome to the challenge. I am really excited about the response we are going to do some great things in this challenge.

Here is to hoping 2013 is free of all set backs, and we all make our goals :amen:

Bought pretty hair toys to spice up my updos. I may get rid of my ghd too. I want a new one anyways but it'll ne a good few months before i can get one.

Okay - for ladies with longer hair - how are you removing shed hair without a blow dryer? I was blow drying my hair last year when it was longer, and then most of this year my hair was short and shed hairs were easy to remove. My hair is almost shoulder length now, and very thick and the shed hair is crazy!

Does anyone have any tips? I typically only wash and DC my hair once a week and I don't plan to comb my hair much more than that either - because I'm PSing all year. I'm trying to get this down before the challenge officially starts.

TIA

The three seamless comb technique works really well. Start with a large detangling comb, use medium, and finally a fine one.

I am going to try finger detangling next year, although I love my seamless combs.

^^^I'll have to give that a try. I don't own a seamless comb, so I'll try to find one. I've been finger detangling under the shower head but it's not working like it was a few months ago. Thanks again, Seamonster.

DANG yall are not playing up in here!!!

I have to see. Just last night I said that I would go back to my no heat rollersets. My hair is not relaxed bone-straight so the rollersets come out textured. Which is fine...I just have to make sure I can commit to that. It's not really in a style if I have somewhere to go; with that I usually flat-iron.

Here's a question...if I"m doing Challenge 1 where I can use heat every 3mths, are flat-irons permitted as the type of heat? Or is it still no flat-irons, etc.? Thanks!

I have an appointment with Tamika for next Saturday to get my hair blown out & trimmed. Since she doesn't do rollersets, she told me she could curl it with a curling iron if I'd like but I don't know about that. I may just get it trimmed & go to my braider & get it braided back up.

I will be getting my annual flat ironing done for this year on Christmas Eve, so I will be posting official starting length pictures after that, probably on New Years Eve.

Was playing with my hair on wash day got lazy and decided to put in 2 French braids. It dried really good. By hair is smooth and it gives my pony tail and or bun a big juicy look. So happy I tried it didn't think I could (can't braid for the life of me) hoping this new method helps me lay off the heat

nakialovesshoes Her name sounds familiar is she a member here? Do try to have her take a length check picture before and after the trim, plus of the finished style. This will really help you with gauging the results for next year. Excited to see your new style!

jesusislove1526 I bet your hair is going to look beautiful for the holiday

freckledface That sounds like a nice style, so glad it worked for you
