The first thing people said when you went natural

/images/graemlins/blush.gif! That's funny.

I didn't get that comment from anyone when I was natural. I guess it depends on the person's features and if they're wearing make-up or not. Oh well.

Oh yes! My mother asked me that when she saw me when I went to visit her and she picked me up from the airport. "But, what are you going to do with it?" lol

I mostly got compliments. When I was asked why...I would say to give my hair a break....which usually got the comment back of ..."well you can do that with YOUR hair...mine won't do that..."

*snort*

I got that mess too. I never understood that. I went natural so I could stop "doing" stuff to it. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Someone I thought was a friend said, "Why? You don't have good hair. You need a perm." /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Everytime I talk to her (she lives in another state) she asks me if I've "stopped the madness" and had a touch-up. She even sent me a Christmas card with some cartoon pickaninny looking kids on it! /images/graemlins/confused.gif Which is weird, because we never discussed hair before...

Ummm..... all I will say is if she ever gets to see your hair after all the great tips given on this forum, the only one who will be "stopping the madness" and nonsense is her. You may just send her into shock and she'll be asking you for the downlow on your routine /images/graemlins/wink.gif

When I went natural for the most part I had support. Being that my hair is thick people just wanted to know how I was going to deal with it. I said the same way I dealt with it when it was relaxed, "with a whole lot of tlc. Tender loving care".

Humph!!! When she see's how beautiful your hair is and bombards you with questions I wouldn't tell her squat. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Those comments are so rude! Everytime I see a sister going natural with a twa or whatever, I try to compliment her because I know she has already heard alot of "negative" stuff. I think going natural is a feat in itself and it's something to be applauded in my book!!! /images/graemlins/smile.gif /images/graemlins/clap.gif

WOW your hair's gorgeous! I can't wait to get my natural back!!!! sigh..

My mom said: "Good, now I can touch your hair again!" Other family members didn't care that I went natural, they just cared that I cut off my hair and asked if I was growing it out. Most people just asked my why did I cut my hair off, and when I told them I cut out my relaxer they just said oh.

Well, I have always been natural (never been relaxed), BUT when I recently stopped flatironing my hair and styling it in it's natural curly and sometimes unruly state, my aunt was like "ummm you didnt have time to comb your hair" and I also got "Are you a hippie now" ( I guess because I lived in Berkeley, CA!) I thought it was cute though!!

My mom was okay with it asked me why I didn't keep the relaxed ends until my natural grew out. But my sis said it was about time cause my relaxed hair was jacked up. Nice! LOL! It was fried and totally unhealthy. I just wish she would have told me something then..I wouldn't want to hear it but.... Anyhoo, my dad said "O yeah" and went back to the TV...lol. My friends asked "WHY?!" you know with that little bit of disgust in the voice. I knew what they meant, I don't have "GOOD" hair. But who cares what they think now, I'm 4" above my waist, healthier and thicker than ever. And their hair is the same length is was 3 years ago.....HA HA HA. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I went natural about 14 months ago (just went back to relaxed),my mother asked,"Are you depressed because you're still fat?Is your husband cheating on you?"
/images/graemlins/swearing.gif

Wow Stacy. That was really rude! /images/graemlins/mad.gif /images/graemlins/frown.gif
I also got some ditzy comments, now that I think about it. "Oh, your hair is so cute like a fluffy teddy bear!" In the words of Michaelangelo, what the shell??

Don't we all want fluffy teddy bear hair? /images/graemlins/wink.gif Sometimes people mean well (like my mom),but they just don't know how to put their thoughts into the right words. Oh, hell! My mom has other issues, too! /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Dag on. Some of these people have a lot of nerve. I care about other people's feelings, so I know I would never say a thing like that. /images/graemlins/nono.gif

Sometimes the hardest part about going natural isn't the new hair care requirements. It's the lack of support from your community, your friends, your family, and they get really mean-spirited about it.

They basically think you are crazy, and you're trying to experiment [but you don't know how bad you look, so I'm going to help you by cursing you]. Well, I don't care. The rest of the world can have a problem with the way God made me, but I treasure every aspect of His craftmanship.

Some folks just don't know when to keep their mouths shut.

I can't stand those statements. It shows ignorance about our own hair texture. /images/graemlins/mad.gif And why does the word "natural" to some people mean short cut afro?? You can grow hair out and be natural too. (Not a lesbian thing either) /images/graemlins/look.gif
