I don't even know how to start enjoying my hair. I enjoyed my hair in the mini braids, but I need to take a break from them for a while. Loose hair makes me nervous lol probably because I have to be more vigilant.

Remember you can enjoy it at any stage in the game. The preparation and wash day can be relaxing and rejuvenating. The style can be flattering to you and a look that you know you will love. The upkeep can be small steps to give you peace of mind that you are keeping your hair up until the next wash and/or restyle day.
Each time you wear your loose hair successfully will give you the confidence to replace nervousness with confidence and optimism. The key is to take the steps that stack your deck in preparation for success and consider how well you can offset any risk that would cause you to worry.

@ItsMeLilLucky

For example, my hair is just over 4 weeks old. I don't really feel like washing it. So instead of washing and restyling it today, I am stretching this style one more week. It is still soft and smooth. I just feel that half-inch crinkle of soft new growth and notice my ends are a bit drier than the roots and length. Each day and night, when I let it down and put it up, I lose less than 10 hairs daily. So oiling my scalp to give it a cool, stimulating tingle and a bit of moisture(with a nice leave-in) will keep it soft until next week's wash. Right now I am deciding which oil to apply to my scalp. Peppermint oil will be a cool tingle that smells like candy canes all day whereas I have an orange oil pre-blended oil designed to stimulate and invigorate the scalp. It is an orange oil base which is known to uplift the mood. Both are pretty good pre-shampoos. My scalp has no orders and no build-up after 4 weeks. I just love the way the oils smell and feel. I also know they help me maintain a healthy scalp while boosting my scalp and nurturing it. I will enjoy treating my scalp today and giving it a moisture boost with a leave-in. I know my hair will look and feel fine until I am ready to rewash it next weekend...I just decided peppermint oil on my edges, orange oil treatment on the rest of my scalp and the Rene Futerer overnight leave-in on my strands.

Edges (pure essential oils never irritate my skin, I only blend them if I want the benefit of adding something not because I have to cut it)
Bulk of scalp
Strands

I used to love Rene Furterer circa 2010 then I got away from it when I discovered my first staple line. I rediscovered loving it around 2020. The deep conditioning masks aren't as great as I remember, but the serums/oils and leave-in are still fantastic.

I have been wearing my hair down pretty much every day since straightening it. This week will be nice to break out some hair accessories and I might even put in a quick style during the week.

Risk

Stretching my wash and restyle to 5 weeks from last full wash and style day

How I offset that risk to enjoy my hair without damage
Quality preparation, tools and styling on wash an style day
Assessed my hair each day and night for excessive shedding, damage, dryness, and breakage
Apply a bit of leave-in if it feels dry
Kept tangle-free by a quick comb-through daily(no breakage or excessive shedding during this step)
Used seamless combs to make sure each comb-through had minimal manipulation and stress to my strands
Put peppermint oil on my edges during week 4 to stimulate my edges
Oiling my full scalp post week 4 to keep my follicles strong and stimulated
Applying a bit more leave-in today to keep my hair supple and prevent dryness and webbing.

I plan to use accessories this week and oil my hair once more(after today) before complete wash day next weekend.

I have been enjoying mine in braids since November. I started braiding the beginning of November and braided enough to put in a bun that looked done while I took my time to gradually finished my head. Each weekend I braided more until I finished around Thansgiving. In January I started replacing each braid until I finished my entire head with a fresh set(the crinkled picture is after I finished at the end of January). I plan to keep that going (refreshing my braids so they stay looking fresh) through March...Winter is my least favorite time to wear my hair out because the cold air dries it out. I have always loved braids. This is the first set I have worn since around 2014.

I swooped in here, when I realized by happenstance, that there were pictures of @Lylddlebit and her fabulous hair posted!!

I have been wondering how certain of you know when a member has posted...

Suddenly,

I realized only 5 minutes ago,

after being on this site since 2003,

that you all know when someone has posted because you clicked 'follow' in their profile. I just made the connection after 22 years of being active on this site.

These braids are gorgeous. They look professionally done, as per usual for anything YOU touch related to hair! Your hair always looks beautiful, healthy, well-cared for and professionally done.

I especially love that last photo with your braids grouped together. You can really see how neat and well done the braids are when they are arranged like so.

I've been enjoying my hair resting in the fact that my velcro ends are gone. I no longer have that nagging anxiety that my hair is having micro-breakage and I can't identify or stop it. I have identified it and I have stopped it. It's a great feeling.

I can now luxuriate in this feeling of 'hair peace'. As it is a welcome respite to not have hair worries in the back of my mind: dreading unbraiding my hair and hearing that inevitable snap of breakage. No more tearing apart and shearing matted ends and losing length gains and health EVERY TIME I re-do my hair.

Having arrived to this point took me meticulous analysis, trial and error, lots of setbacks and disappointments, puzzlement and arriving to the precipice and brink of considering to give it all up by figuratively jumping off the edge and throwing in the proverbial towel.

Feeling at my wit's end and with feelings of grief and loss, I was planning to quietly withdraw from the world of afro-textured hair care in August 2024. Then, things 'suddenly fell into place'.

Coasting for me right me now is how I am really, really enjoying my hair. I know for some it's just hair. Yet, I feel so very blessed and thankful and privileged to be at this point. Some people never arrive here. For a time, it looked like I was going to be one of them.

Thank you so much! Braids get a bad rap but as long and I keep my hair properly moisturized and lubricated they are an excellent tool and beautiful style. I have always loved them. The last picture is all Janet Jackson "You Want This" lol. It's a style all it is own then will give the crinkled effect during the let down. If it wear it as a style I dont have to dip them in boiling water for crinkles so that is a two-in-one.
Thanks so much. I am LOVING these braids. I have been sayign I am going to braid my hair every time I saw a girl with cute braids lol. I just had to sit down and do it.

I love this! Hair breakthrough and peace! This is so important because when you dont have to be fearful and reactive enjoyment and contentment is a natural side effect.

I didn't have much time to post yesterday but I was coming back in here to say to @Chicoro , Sis, you just taught me something else!! I had no idea that's what that feature did!

I actually still "follow" members I've been following since 2010 and don't recall ever once seeing any notification of when they post!
I just thought it was more like a "like" function that didn't really do anything. lol

Uh oh…. wait a minute. I thought that was what YOU used @MzSwift and you @snoop and you @GGsKin !!!

No??!!

That’s what happens when you assume. The person doing the assuming, and doing so erroneously is ME!

I guess I’m up in here creating confusion again! I was like mzswift and them always be up in these threads first. They must be following people. Let me start following so I can know when people post.

And ya’ll are like, “Oh! Is that what it’s for? Let me follow people, too, then.”

Ahm, I THOUGHT I was copying you all! Chile…let me go somewhere and sit down.

@Chicoro :rofl::lachen:

I've learned on this site that there are always little tidbits of info being imparted in a thread that I could probably use or stand to learn so I tend to just go into most threads that are updated to see what ladies are chatting about. I love reading about different ladies' experiences and noticing trends that maybe I can share to help someone in another thread or something.

I've also gotten some really unrelated helpful tips! I mean, I've learned about some harmful effects of spinach and kale in a thread about a rapper down in the Entertainment section! I've learned not to take any discussion for granted.

Even @snoop 's advice to use a fragrance oil in mixtures - makes total sense but it never occurred to me bc I was trying to keep my stuff all natural and whatnot.

So I'm in here to see ladies who enjoy their hair and the ways they enjoy wearing it. Maybe I'll pick up a new PS or get some encouragement to wear my hair out more.

I only realised we could follow one another after I saw you followed me :lachen: @Chicoro

Like @MzSwift I go into most updated threads for the same reason
