So I would like to start this testimony off like they do in some churches....
Giving honor to God who is the head of my life and thanking Him from Whom all blessings flow. I would like to tell the choiiiiir how blessed I was to hear the beautiful song this morning and to thank the Ersher board No. 1, the mother board and the deacons.....
I started my journey to Pressed Hair last Monday by taking down exhibit A and B because I wanted to do something nice for the Debutante Ball that my man chile was an escort in.
This was a two day process to take down and I needed to get into my office to see my IT guy about my computer.
As Wednesday rolled around I did some twists and thought I could just put on one of my trusty full cap girlfriends, albeit I had not had one on in over a year I figure no harm no foul.
Well, there was some serious foul the likes you would not believe. I could not put my full cap wig on because.........my hair was waaaaay tooo thick and tooo long...Have Mercy, I knew I was in danga girl!!!
I dug through my wig stash praying all the way hoping I had one with bangs that would cover my oh so obvious hairline peeking out. I found one, but guess what it was a day out of the book of Winnie the Pooh. Remember the story Blustery Day?!?!?!?
Anywhoo I could hardly stand the thing on my head because it was so tight but I had to cover up the first phase of a four phase process. Stay with me ya'll.... So I determined that I would need to do something other than the girlfriend complete cover up for the Ball (aka full cap wig) and due to some serious thinking and wondering what would my hair look like flat ironed I must admit the idea was getting the best of me so I thought, If I do this I would need to do some serious work and some serious time would be involved. My trusty sidekick, my sister was not around to help so it would be all on me.erplexed
Thursday I did a deep conditioning and detangling (hair ball the size of a large orange - it had been a minute) and then battled with putting my hair up and a semi wash and go since I didn't have time to do anything with it because I was busy and needed to get my son to his rehearsal for the Debutante Ball.
Well I washed the cottony mass of wonderfulness early morning and had a good little talk with it saying that I needed it to be dry by the time I got home that night because it was going to be twisted up in large twists and having it wet was not going to be a good thing going to bed. At the very least just be damp but not wet, please not wet.
Here is what it looked like...Exhibits C, D, E and F
I pulled out some of it and it shrunk right back up!
Shrinkage and I are FRENEMIES!!!!!!!!!!
Soooo by the time I get home at 11:00 pm that night, guess what, this stuff is still soaking wet! How is that possible? I know this stuff is porous but in my best Neffie impression......"Are You Serious?!"
I get it twisted up that night (really around 1:00 am) and realize I am in some seriously deep KimChi!!!
So I am going back and forth trying to decide should I just do flat twists in the front and put on a 3/4 wig or actually go for broke and take a once in a lifetime shot at seeing how long this stuff really is.
Well after 5 hours with a fan in 92 degree weather and the mother of all battles with constant shrinkage here is the blow by blow play of Saturday afternoon. I literally finished at 5:00 pm and was suppose to be at the Ball at 6:30. Let's just say it won't be anytime soon I will attempt this at home again.
So without futher adoo here is what the process looked like and before you ask I never got it to show the real length because it kept shrinking up. I used every product available, iron guard, Chi everything and Sabino but I was NOT going to get that flat iron near 400 degrees because my hair was true to nature and held heat like a raging furnace.
So Nonie, I told you I would post if I decided to be a dare devil. Here ya go Chica. It doesn't show the real length but it gives you some idea of the volume of hair I was dealing with.
Half done half not done, I was almost in tears at this point.
It was like a WWF Championship Event!!!!!!
It WOULD NOT stop shrinking!!!!!!!!!! And I realize I will NEVER EVER see my real length.
There is at least 4 inches in there unaccounted for.
Trust me when I say this has been a seriously character building event. Oh and yes shrinkage won by a MILE!!!!!!
I did manage to do some tendrils in the front and pin up the top half with a hair barrett and let it hang in the back. It was absolutely hysterical watching peoples responses because they did not recognize me, I was getting double takes all night and one person even walked pass me because they had never seen my hair like this.
Even got a chance to talk all things hair with the lady I was sitting beside, she was not Nikos cousin but she was interested in knowing how I got my natural hair the way it was. Sunday at church was a real hoot too. I went into a store after church and a lady wanted to know how in the world I had so much hair and could I talk to her daughter about it.
It has been a very interesting few days. Right now I have it pinned up like my grandmother use to wear her hair, I think about that and smile since she just passed recently and I have wonderful memories of playing in her hair and taking care of it for her.
So all in all even though it was a battle of all battles I'm glad it was done and the next time I do this it may very well be another 4-5 years. So enjoy....and thanks for letting me share my testimony.....Let the church say Aman!!!!!!!!!
RIP - Big Momma!!!
PS: I am sooo thankful I have you ladies on this board who have seen me go through the ups and downs with my hair and for those who have been such and inspiration to me. Thank you all. Ladies with shrinkage I raise my fist in the air and say FIGHT THE SHRINKAGE THAT BE!!!!
