I used to go to a salon in Chicago that when they put in a deep conditioner in my hair they would put me under a steamer instead of a hair dryer. While I was going to this salon my hair grew like it never did before. They also only used Mizani products.

I don't live in Chicago any longer and wanted to know if any of you knew what this steam might have been doing to my hair and is there a way to achieve these results on your own at home.

I had never heard of this method before but my hair was so healthy when I was going there I just wanted to know if any of you have used this steam method before or heard of the benefits from it and have you gotten good results.

Curve Salon in NYC does this as well... You can do it yourself at the gym - the steam room! I add ALOT Of conditioner and do it myself when I go to the gym...

I used to go weekly and they did not put a plastic cap on my head they just put me under the steam

Wolftrap, what is the name of the salon in Chicago where you had this done? I'd love to check it out.

BTW, when I lived in NYC, I did have this done. However, it was a while ago and I only went once, so I can't remember the name of the salon. Sorry. But I too, heard that Curve is great.

I don't know anything about it, but I have a friend who has beautiful waist length hair- don't think it's relaxed, and I just found out she steams her hair! I'll have to get some tips from her!

Where in Chicago were you going? Id love to know!!!

You can get deep conditioners like that @ Ossama's and Max & co (both in Hyde Park).

I think the steam opens up the pores of your scalp. In addition, the steam probably allows the conditioner to penetrate your folicles better. This is only my assumption.

Now that I think about my hair would swing and my scalp would feel so good after receiving one of those treatments.

i used to go to ossama's too. my thinking was that steam is a form of water, so you are giving your hair moisture. however, at those egyptian places they blowdry your hair within an inch of its' life!! so, yeah, they're adding moisture and then taking it right back!

I think it does open the cuticle... There is a write up on Curve's site about steaming as well and the benefits...

I just slather conditioner and sit in the steam room at the gym, no cap and let it penetrate and shower and rinse. I love the steam room - feel like you are on vacation ;-)

The salon I went to was Ossama's There are several of them in Chicago. I used to go to the one downtown. Although I have been to the one in Hyde Park too. The one downtown had a stylist that I really liked so I used to go to that one more often. Just look in the yellow pages and you should find it.

Wolftrap,

Did you go back to the salon you were telling us about in another post, that rushed you out of your conditioning treatment recently? If so, how did it go this time?

You know the reason why I went to them is because of their technique which is very similar to the dominicans and that is what I was use to being from NY. But whatever they were doing my hair was growing like a weed and it had never been healthier. So whatever those blowdryers and steam were doing it definitely benifitted me.

You know what thanks for remembering. I actually did go back to them yesterday as a matter of fact. I did not have the same problem but there were also more people in the salon. But I had my game face on though

Sitting there under the dryer like "I wish a ni**a would tell me to get up before my time" LOL! I was NOT going to have it that day.

It was Ossamas. I just created a post on it. I keep hearing things about curve but it seems that thier clientele is only natural heads and I am relaxed. Let me know if I am wrong though.

hey wolftrap,

maybe it was just the hyde park one, but i swear you could smell the burning hair in there and see all the smoke! i wouldn't let them blowdry me that long, and as a result, i think i benefited from the steam...my strands felt plump! i stopped going when i my scalp got burned with the dryer and i realized that i didn't really get any good styles there, since they specialize in long, sleek and straight and my hair wasn't long at all then.

I'm sorry about your experience but if I can remember I think the one in hyde park was pretty small. That may be the reason for all the smoke and all that. I can't believe they burned your scalp. That never happened with my stylist and I loved him. He knew how to style my hair and everything. When I first went my hair was about to the bottom of my ear. It grew to shoulder length from going there. So I'm not sure if they specialize in long sleek straight hair it just may be that peoples hair has grown that way from going there. It is the same in the Dominican salons. There are SO many black women that go there and their hair is bra strap length and beyond. They also do short hair but I think their hair has grown from going there. The Dominicans really don't know how to style but since I wear my hair straight down anyway then it doesn't bother me. But when my hair was shorter and I would go to them then the styles were awful but since i liked the way my hair felt I would just do it the way I wanted once I got home.

Hey Wolftrap!

I used to go to Ossama's downtown for about a year. I went to a guy there that EVERYBODY loved. I like the way my hair looked when they did it because it was super silky and shiney. Problems is I dont like all that blowdrying!! I like the steam dryers but the blowdrying was just too much for me.

I also went to the the Ossama's in hyde park and the girl who would style it was off the chain! However, the lady who blowdried it was just terrible. I tell you, the lady blow dried my hair for an hour. My hair was in the worst condition after that!!

THe guy who was at Ossama's and left has his own shop called Maysa's in Oak park. He's so nice! In fact he has agrand opening special going on for a regular style for $30!!

This reminds me.........I bought a steamer a while back when I was natural. My hair was so soft and moisturized from its use. I need to start using it again on a regular basis!!!!

Shame on you, lol. I'd love to get one but I don't have the money right now...booooo!

[/ QUOTE ]

lol...Yes, it is a shame that I stopped using it regularly. But guess after a while I returned to my "keep it simple" principle - deep conditioning under the hair dryer instead. I'm going to start using it again this week. I promise.

This is a quote from Peachtree:

Hey Ms ballet

I have several ways... 1) place conditioner in a microwaveable container & place it in my homemade steamer (stove top); 2) hold the container above my Caruso steamer; 3) Most often times, I'll place it in the microwave for 5 or so secs. Then I'll either use it as my "pre-poo" treatment or carry it to the shower with me to use after shampooing

By the way, the conditioner is not "hot".... it's merely "slightly" warmed. U can cover the top to keep it even warmer until ur ready to use it after poo'ing

Give it a try

[/ QUOTE ]

Has anyone else tried making a homemade steamer? Peachtree was using her homemade devices to heat up conditioner. Has anyone made one for their hair? I'm wondering if I can use my Caruso steamer for this purpose.

I used to go to a guy named Fadi and Ossammas downtown. I loved him he was so nice. I didn't mind the blowdrying. He would do the blowdrying and styling. I figured since I was only doing it about once a week and then never applying any more heat to my hair.(no curling iron, flat iron) then the blowdrying wasn't that bad
