For all the Newbies and Discouraged hair growers, tell the board what is the best things you do for your hair and why it helps.

I'll go first!

  • Protective styles (Bunning and weaving) : protects ends from manipulation to retain great length and enhances thickness
  • Stretching : Enhances hair thickness and gives me enough new growth to relax
  • Texlax instead of bone straight relaxer : Hair is much stronger
  • Moisture, Moisture : No breaking hair
  • Co-Washing : Hair is softer longer and I dont have to DC as much
What About You?

Edit : OH YEAH, DECREASE HEAT DRASTICALLY!

Number one!!!!

Leave it ALONE! ( Braids, or protective styles that you only have to comb/style once a week)

Number two!!!!!

Go Natural - find the simplest products that work for you!

  1. Deep Conditioning
  2. Low Manipulation
  3. Wide tooth comb/shower comb/Denman Brush
  4. Using heat wisely
  5. Braidouts/Twistouts
  6. KEEPING THINGS VERY SIMPLE
  7. Sticking to what works FOR ME and not jumping on the tempting bandwagons:look:

1. Moisture, both inside and out (hair and body)
2. Low manipulation: decreases breaking due to stress on strands...Just let it be: hair will be hair...it's going to flop the way that it wants, curl the way that it wants, frizz the way that it wants, shrink the way that it wants...accept it for what it does and work around it, lol
3. As Fabienne said, keep it simple with the products. I realized that the more I mess around with products, the more my hair messes with me...and I normally do not win that fight
4. Get to know your hair...what works for some, doesn't for others...research and become more knowledgeable about your hair so that you don't jump on every bandwagon that comes around

1. Wearing 8 large twists overnight if I'm wearing a fro or afro puff during the day.
2. Washing my hair with conditioner.
3. Low manipulation.
4. Redken protein treatment every 4-6 weeks to STOP my breakage.

-Rollersetting
-Deep conditioning twice a week
-Co washing regularly
-Using regular conditioner as a leave-in
-Protective styles
-Taking vitamins
-Very limited direct heat (3-4 x's a year)
-Stretching relaxers
-Drinking lots of water

Who do you deal with puffy roots when rollersetting?

1. Taking my vitamins
2. Steam treatments
3. Drinking water!

what type of vitamins do you take?

as for me, texlaxing makes my hair thicker. But I rather the bone straight look for myself.

I'm still trying to fix my dry hair issues so I can't really speak on anything else.

Here are my top 5 (in order of importance):

* Healthy Diet and Regular Exercise - enhances blood circulation and supplies the body with nutrients necessary for healthy hair growth
* No Direct Heat - allows hair to retain moisture and avoid damage and breakage
* Moisture - strengthens hair, leading to reduced breakage and more length retention
* Low Manipulation - helps to reduce breakage from excessive combing, brushing, styling, etc., leading to more length retention
* Protection - includes wearing a scarf and/or bonnet at bedtime and keeping ends off shoulders/collars to protect hair from breakage.

1. Cardio
2. Water
3. Vitamins
4. Co-washing every 3 days and detangling
5. Braidouts
6. Moisture
7. DC after every wash

1. Using the right products for my hair type and knowing what ingredients will render the best results for my hair
2. Co-washing
3. Rollersetting
4. Finger combing/styling
5. Protective styling
6. LHCF & Fotki (to keep me motivated and focussed)
7. Daily massages
8. Scarf method (done on freshly washed & rollerset hair to keep the edges smooth, also done nightly)
9. Stretching relaxers (Keeping chemical use to a bare minimum to 2-3 times a year)
10.Consistency (Sticking to a simple regimen & products that work)

transitioning:
  • frequent DCs
  • protective styles/bunning
  • baggying my ends
  • lowwwwww manipulation
post BC:
  • airdrying
  • leaving in VO5
  • cowashing every 2 days...waiting 3 days made my hair feel dry
also...using a satin pillowcase/scarf or bonnet, taking a hair/skin/nails supplement, eating more fruits and veggies and drinking a lot of water. i am beginning to see a difference in not only the way i feel/my energy levels but also the moisture level of my hair and skin.

I ignore them :perplexed

Sometimes if the ng is just TOO ridiculous, I'll blow out the roots in the front and leave the back alone, since no one sees that part anyway

true. thats the part that gets me. i hate rollersetting because of puffy roots. lets see what a blow out will do.

  • DC twice a week
  • Co-wash every other day
  • Moisturize DAILY
  • Protective styling DAILY
  • Minimal direct heat

Ditto I just blow out the front roots and the edges if its too puffy. If you pull the rollers real tight when you do them it reduces the puffiness. I am reaaaaally thinking about going natural but I am kinda nervous.

Virtually no heat.
Protect and lubricate the ends with natural oils while wet
Co-wash regularly
Use a shower comb and detangle carefully
Henna 2-3x/month
