Talk to me re: flaxseed gel

@ciccina, let me know when you start selling products :drunk:

 a realistic forecast is that I will become poor buying all the butters and seeds in the world before even using my stuff, I stopped being a product junkie and now I am ingredient junkie, what a disgrace

(think Nickelodeon)

LOL :lachen:

2. IT WORKS!!!
YAYYYYYY!!!! welcome to the club!

Flax seed gel is one of the best. I just made me a batch! I sometimes add aloe vera gel, an oil, and eo oils. And sometimes add the bold items below :yep:
Aloe? I'll have to try that!

Interesting....

So I could possibly replace this with my ecostyler?? It seems super simple. All you do is boil the seeds/water??

For those of yo uwho add aloe vera gel and EO's. Do you add it while it's boiling or after you have strained it??

Ok. How bout I just whooped up a batch of this tonight and I am in total and complete awe.

1. This stuff is like slime (think Nickelodeon) and I find that awesome. Yep, I too am weird like that lol.

2. IT WORKS!!! The definition I got from this was CRAZY. I just may be able to pull off a WNG! :yep:

3. You can't get any cheaper and more natural than water and seeds. For those hesitating, don't. This is actually pretty cool. No buildup at all and pretty good shine. It has a soft flexible hold. (I used it over Giovanni Direct Leave in and Coconut oil)

4. If you want greater hold, pile more of it on. Weird but it's working for me so far. :yep:

wow! im glad to know it worked out for you!! Im going to be trying the exact same products tonight or tomorrow on a twistout...giovanni, coconut oil and flaxseed gel!!

i cant wait!

Cherokee-n-Black...so I want to aid you by giving you names for your comedy hair site...how about:

Natural Di-HAIR-ster

Kinks, Coils & Cussing

Or

The Hair Junkie Flunkie.....just let me know girl I gotcha on the set-up..lol

omegachick31 OMG you are funny...do you do this for a living? I love your ideas. I would only tweak them slightly. So far, I'm torn between:

"Kinks, Coils, and Calamity" and "Natural Dis-ast-hair" - really leaning toward the latter!

growinghealthyhair I add aloe vera gel and eo after I strain. And in my last batch I used aloe vera juice because that was all I had on hand. Didn't see much difference either.

I tried it a few months ago, but it didn't have the hold I was looking for in a gel. I used it for a braidout and my hair was not as defined as I like it to be. I really wanted it to work though. :-/ Maybe I will try to add some xanthum gum to it...

i know i am late but these are some good tips!! now that it is summer i have been wanting to do more wngs...i will try it on a weekend to see how defined and frizz free it comes out and report back

So I'mmmmm baaaack! Got my flaxseed gel in the mail this weekend! Woo hoo! I tried it on a wash n go--that was a no-go. Even though I'm transitioning, sometimes I wear a WNG on the weekends, just to experiment and see what the "natchal" hair is doing. My relaxed hair has a bit of reversion so the contrast is not AWFUL--after it dries LOL. But the flaxseed did nada for curl/wave definition.

I am, however, rocking a slick back ponytail bun, and boy do I look smoove today! I've had big puffy hair for about three weeks and nothing--not even the dreaded ecostyler could tame it. Flaxseed gel has my hair layin' down! And shiny (although some of that could be the Wild Grown Oil). Soo...I'll keep experimenting, but for now, I got my "slickback" gel staple! I'm excited.

I made a batch this weekend (used Naptural85's recipe - hey girl). It's so easy to do. I used it for two strand twists. I noticed right away (sorry no pictures) that my twists were smooth. Normally they look kinda frizzy and don't always stay together. Not the case this time. They also looked a little shinier than usual. I couldn't stop touching them they felt so moist and juicy and soft. I took them down this morning (in a rush) and I noticed how defined they were. I want to try it on flat twists to see if I get a better look. The gel seems to keep the frizzies at bay - which is great. I have absolutely no frizz today. Now I love my eco-styler gel for my unruly edges and so far I'm not sure how the flaxseed gel will work on them because I didn't tie my edges down. Also I'm anxious to try it for a slicked down bun. One thing I imagine is that it will be easier to comb/brush through than with the gel. I give it a 4.5 out of 5 for now - especially since its allllllllll natural! I may never buy gel again.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE flaxseed gel I made mine last week for the very first time...Let me tell you it makes my 4b/4a curls pop. I was rocking the Michael Jackson curly bang in the front, and thought I was hot stuff. I put it in my hair and little ringlets appeared. Yes it is very mucousy but it works, I added peppermint oil, jojoba oil, and lavender oil to my flaxseed. Shhhh but I love playing in the gel. Yes I'm weird but who cares. I place it in the fridge until I am ready to use it again.

By the way I got so many compliments at church about my hair. My two strand twist out I recently did were very very defined. I was amazed because my hair likes to act funny and puff out after doing two strand twists.

With the flaxseed gel, there was no puffing at all. My hair loves it. Like stated no Flaking, no alcohol, and the best part is its NATURAl.

A mistake I did though is I threw out my flaxseeds when I was done making my gel. Don't throw away your seeds after you first batch like I did, I about kicked myself in the arse. Im trying to save as much flaxseeds as I can because I live in Italy so its hard enough to find products let alone flaxseeds locally!

@Songs_of_Serenity, I bought mine at whole foods right before I left the states. They have powdered flaxseeds but not sure how it works since its been altered by grinding. So I just use the whole seeds.

I got a flaxseed gel sample from Naturalista Cosmetics on Etsy.

I didn't wear my hair out most of the time so it got spoiled and I had to get rid of it :ohwell:

I did use it once before it spoiled though, it smelled nice and it worked fine, I was a little heavy handed :badidea:

Made my hair feel wet and all weird, but I love it because it's a natural gel and it works as well as the Ecostyler..

But the Ecostyler is easier to use, not as slimy :yep:

@DesignerCurls
@ciccina

When you mix your flaxseed gel with hair butters how does it turn out.. I tried it once and it didn't mix too well it was like the flaxseed gel is too simy to hold onto the butter..

LadyMacgyver I mixed my butters will oils first...a tad bit of wheat germ oil will help. Wheat germ oil contains lecithin which helps oils and water to emulsify (sometimes I add aloe vera juice to the flaxseed gel, don't know if that makes a difference too). I use an electric mixer to mix everything.

You all have me excited about making up a batch. My mix is gonna be flax gel, shea butter, vitamin E (preservative), a little plain gelatin and lavender EO. I will whip it all together with a hand mixer.

I used to use plain flax gel on my natural hair and liked it for moisture, I plan to use this for twist outs on my relaxed hair.

Thanks for the inspiration!

great idea, no need for heating and wheat germ oil has ceramides as well (I love it for sealing).

Hey Ojthomas I learned about flaxseed gel in Italy, very popular there as well :yep: Check out big supermarkets in the "BIO" or cereals section, Naturasi' supermarkets (Italian health food stores), or erboristerias and look for "semi di lino". Pet stores carry them as well (LOL weird I know, but apparently health conscious horses eat them )

I finally made a small batch of flaxseed gel today since I remembered to buy the seeds ($4.79 for a 24 oz bag). I only used 2 tablespoons and 1 cups of water since I'm only using the gel for my edges (crochet braids).

So far I like it. It has a soft hold and it not hard like my Eco Styler gel. I had been using Kinky Curly but that did not hold well enough.

I just made some the texture wasnt as gross as i thought it was going to be i added some oils and SAA im going to apply it later and see how it looks

My first batch of flaxseed gel went really well i was totally SURPRISED with the hold i got the same hold i get from eco styler im def going to make it again:grin:

It has super hold abilities (the hair is not going anywhere with this stuff). I used a fourth cup of seeds and only one cup of water. I will later try two cups of water because the hold was too much for my liking. It only took me about five minutes to make. It does not define curls on my hair.
