Okay, so by looking at the ingredients, this is not a protein treatment to stop breakage. I wonder what's stopping the breakage...hmmmm. I want to try this because my breakage has not stopped but since I don't know whether its a protein issue or a moisture issue...I'm not sure what avenue of treatment to try. A couple of ladies referred me to this product and I really respect them so I want to try it. Couldn't find it this weekend but I'll look again.

It sounds great and I would like to try it, but you are right Cayenne! The ingredients don't look like a protein treatment, they look like a mini-relaxer. Maybe that's why there is so much slip with this product and why it seems to work so well on new growth and naturals. I don't know about how my hair would do with applying sodium hydroxide every time I deep conditioned. I know some naturals would be furious to know they were actually texlaxing every time they conditioned or relaxed ladies were overprocessing every time they conditioned. Has anyone checked further into these ingredient?

*MAJOR UPDATE*

Um... I actually have a total of 11 jars of the Pantene R&R Hair Mask.

(Not 9 as I originally posted!)

OMG, you're a pj after my own heart! I am currently in pj rehab trying to wean myself off purchasing multiples beyond 3... :look:

I have to say, the Breakage Defense Mask is the best product Pantne puts out there. I also like the Detangler too. Pokahonats hipped me onto this. It helped me when I had breakage from too many ACV rinses. It's good stuff.

This question (re: sodium hydroxide) was actually brought up months ago in a thread related to Creme of Nature shampoo. While sodium hydroxide is the active ingredient in lye relaxers, it does not necessarily mean that every product containing the ingredient is "relaxing" your hair. Sodium hydroxide, chemically speaking, is a strong "base" (opposite of an acid) and is often used to adjust the pH of personal care products. I think the concentration and strength of the sodium hydroxide in the product would determine whether it would affect the texture of your hair. In the Pantene R&N Mask, NaOH is one of the last ingredients, which means that it is present in a very small amount. It is probably only added to control the pH of the conditioner. Therefore, I personally wouldn't worry about it straightening my hair.

HTH!:)

Im sure one of our resident Chemisty experts will chime in, but since Sodium Hydroxide is the last ingredient, I doubt it is enough to have the same effect as a relaxer. I know NTM Triple moisture leave in has Sodium hydroxide as one of it's last ingredients too, I use it every day, and my new growth is nowhere near straightened. Maybe it is being used to neutralize the ph level? :scratchch

I think I did read this somewhere. There was a thread where someone explained it really well but I have no idea where it is.

I answered it, sort of, a few posts before yours. I do remember seeing it answered in more detail awhile ago, though.

I admit, I haven't taken chemistry in about 10 years, so I'm kinda rusty. But sodium hydroxide has other uses besides straightening hair.:)

If any product had enough lye to chemically change the texture of the hair then it would be a relaxer and would be regulated as such. Using lye is a cheap and effective way to regulate ph in a product. Lye is acutally used in pill form to aid digestion for some people.

Phew! Yes that helps a lot! I'll have to check it out..and thanks so much for the extra explanation. I needed that for when I'm on one of my bottle reading excursions!:)

Please clarify. Are you ladies using the mask, conditioner, or both? And, what about the shampoo?

I use all three and I love them. I shampoo, condition and then use the mask for 20 mins.

I tried it and I really like it. I did a Nexxus Emergencee treatment for 20 mins, applied Porosity Control for 5 mins, and then did a deep conditioner with the Pantene. I could definitely feel a difference in my hair. I flat ironed and wore it down today. Really nice!:D

Cayenne0622~I tried it and like it as well. I used the mask. I'm going to use it after my ApHogee treatment this weekend. I still have a little shedding to end.

I plan to purchase the shampoo and conditioner as well.

I also think this is a good product. I used it after my relaxer as a deep conditioner w/heat for 15 mins. My hair was detangled and soft, but without that extra silicone feeling. Made my ends looks smooth and there was barely any hair in the comb while detangling.

oh damn, I just left cvs I brought the poo and mask, but forgot the conditioner I'm going back... i'm looking for a staple, Nexxus is my baby but umm its damn expensive and humectress is not all that to me... and Mane and Tail umm is kinda weird on my hair... I'm not throwing them away just yet... hopefully I hit the jackpot with this because I'm sheding like crazy over here!!!

I have the shampoo, conditioner and mask. I was dealing greatly with post partum shedding. I do not know if it was just time for the post partum shedding / breakage to stop or what but I used the shampoo, conditioner and then deep conditioned with the mask and no more breakage ! I only used it one time. It is very hard to find the mask where I am. I had to get it while me and hubby were visiting his family in New Jersey. I think I am definitely going to stock up on the mask the next time I see it. I think it will be great for me to have a nice amount of it stacked away. :)

I had a hard time trying to find the Relaxed and Natural mask as well down here. So I picked up a bottle of the regular (comes in a white jar with, I think, green writing on it). Maaaaaaan, before I used this stuff it had taken me over an hour just to detangle from my shampoo. I slapped this in along with some Grapeseed oil and let it set for about an hour, without heat. When I rinsed it out I could put my fingers through my hair from root to end, with no tangles. I was about 12weeks post relaxer when I did this. This will be a staple for me....plus it's cheap.

okay clarified, washed with poo, and conditioning with the mask under dryers right now... man this is nic stuff, first thing I noticed was that the lather was more intense than therapee lather, and less stripping... I applied the mask and my hair was instantly soft... umm I'm excited ladies... I plan to blow dry and flat iron when I'm done

I like this mask, the only place I have found that carries it in CVS. Last time it was on sale I stocked up. Good stuff!

I just bought some yesterday at the CVS near my job. That's the only place (including other CVS stores!) I've seen it in my area. I was kinda pissed that they charge $7 for that little jar, but it sounds like it's worth it. I'll be trying it this weekend.:)

I am glad to get the rec to check in KMart which I will be doing tomm. I checked in every other store I could think of and couldn't find this. ...Like someone else, I did find the Intensive Moisturizing Mask in the white jar and it was great too! I am determined to find the Breakage Defense though!

I am not supposed to be on the forum, BUT check out amazon.com for this. They have the Pantene R&N Breakage Defense shampoo, conditioner, and mask in three-packs. I believe that I purchased the next-to-last mask for $14.42. That is less than $5, and I did not have to pay shipping due to my Amazon prime membership. They are out of stock now, but keep your eyes open for this.

JUST SAY NO TO LHCF-MANGO387

I cashed in a coupon I had last night at cvs. I had 13 extra bucks so I added 4 of own dollars and got three tubs of it:grin:

I have the whole line, also. the mask is my favorite. I always break it out when I see more hairs than usual and it does the trick. Great slip, too. This is some of the best smelling conditioner I have ever used.
