Summer 2010 No Heat Challenge June 21-Sept 22

I'm transitioning too, and that works for me. I co-wash the evening before and let it air dry overnight.

To help it dry a little faster, I have to either let it airdry 80% in 5 ponytails first then twist/braid it OR with a towel, squeeze (not rub) most of the moisture out of my hair before I twist/braid it. If I don't do this, my hair is still a little damp in the morning. :nono: You may not have this problem, but I'm putting it out there just in case.

You know what? Since I am off of work this monday and I do my weekly wash on Sunday nights, I will let my twists air dry and see how they turn out the next day. If they are dry, then I know I can still do my washes at night and have dry hair the next morning in order to go to work. That has really been my concern, wet hair in the morning. I will give it a try. Thanks!!

I haven't read all of the posts, but can this include indirect heat (ex: my Pibbs dryer)?
I'd love to join!

No indirect heat allowed except for while DCing. But you do have the three heat passes.

If you look at it, many of us only heat once a month anyway out of habit.

^^^ awe shucks, i might be making a trip to the BSS to get some pony tails then. I am thinking of trying the spin pin by Goody it claims to do the work of 20 bobby pins. Here's a tutorial that I am looking at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc5wl6Ex050

I have those spin pins. They were hard to find, and I'm in NYC. The work of 20 bobby pins huh? well... I'd say that they were ok, but for the price... I use a butterflye clip and I'm good. I've only used them for french roll, maybe they will work for something else.

I got my spin pins. . . .its gonna take some more hair growth and practice for me to feel like i got purdy buns but they do work. my hair feels very secure. I have the office to myself today so I wasn't stressing about makig it perfect,

Is anyone using a blowdryer on cool? I may try it this weekend. I hadn't even thought about doing that. Or even using a hood dryer on cool. hmmmmm wonder how a roller set would work with a cool hood.

^^If you try it, let us know how it turns out Although I have banned blow dryers from my life this year, I am curious to know how the hooded dryer works on cool...I'm just too lazy to try it. I'd rather just air dry while I'm running errands or something. Kill 2 birds, ya know?!

oh yeah, i know. i was just over in another thread and someone mentioned blow drying on cool and the lightbulb went off. i may try both. . .can't hurt right.

Has anybody ever trimmed/had their had trimmed without blowing it out first or flat ironing it? I've NEVER had a trim without somebody blowing my hair out first so I'm kinda iffy about this. I don't want to come back home with botched hair! I don't want to use heat, but I will in order to save my hair... any thoughts?

im relaxed so i don't think i count, but my hair is always blown out when she cuts it

I don't count either because I'm relaxed but I have a natural friend who goes to a salon specializing in natural hair care and she never has to blow her hair out and her cut looks good when it's straightened. I think it depends on the stylist and their skill level.

^^ that's true. I use to go to one stylist years ago that insisted that hair NEEDS to be wet when being cut. now the lady i go to only cuts my hair dry,

Yes, I go to a stylist that specializes in natural hair care and she just gets to work with my hair in whatever state. She is pretty good too. First good hairstylist I found in 2 years....boy, it's about time!!

OK...I used a heat pass today...I had to blow my hair out after my first henna treatment, to see how it was acting.

SO here's a question... I blew my hair on low.. Can that count as 1/2 a pass? :drunk: Also, is it good for 24 hours? (I think I want to flat iron it) or per heat application?

I would definitely consider it a 1/2 heat pass because usually the process of using heat in the first place for styling involves either blowing/hood drying followed by flat ironing. stretch that heat pass out to the max.

Ladies . . .what say you all?

BTW, the shine in your siggy :lick: How'd you get that right there?

Ok so I followed through with the other half of my heat pass and flat ironed my hair. sigh.. it was just necessary!

Oh and the shine... I use a mixture of Jojoba, EVCO, Almond oil, EVOO and Vitamin E. I mix it in a bottle and dab on my hands and run them throughout my hair, focusing on the ends...a little goes a long way! All else fails... Jojoba is the main ingredient!

I used a heat pass today. I washed and DC'd last night and let it air dry while i slept. I woke up this morning and flat ironed my hair. Feels good, nice and silky.

I'm jealous about your silkiness! Swing your hair around for me once or twice :lachen: I'm still wet bunning.

I wish I could wet bun. Turns out my hair doesn't like it at all. I tried it last summer and there is where I started down the road to setback. I am jealous of you ladies who can do that.

lets trade for a day. lol

Today I have my little itty bitty spin pin bun in. I realized just how much of a setback I went through, every time I bun my hair and can see how little my hair is.

Y'all, I wanna try some braids or kinky twist extensions. I know I'm allergic to the hair, besides washing it before installing it, is there anything else I can do?

I'm planning a beach trip with my family and I REALLY don't want to have to fool with my hair and my DD hair at the beach.

Do people still get crochet braids? I know back in the day they did and that seems less time consuming to apply and much easier to remove.

Update on Stylist -

She did a pretty good job on my cut. She took off about an inch... but that was expected since I haven't had a trim in over a year. Its when I realized an inch is 2 months of progress that I wanted to :wallbash: but now I have no splits and I can start from a good place. She didn't use heat which I was the happiest about. She was very gentle with my hair. I probably wont be going back though because the next time scissor will be going in my head will be when I BC.

My current stylist always cuts hair wet. It took me a while to realize that yes the cut CAN be more precise but my question is isn't your hair longer when wet? Aren't you losing more length when the hair is cut wet? I asked my stylist and she said no more length is lost wet than dry. Suuuuuure. When I do get a professional trim I ALWAYS make sure that she cuts my hair dry. No exceptions.

Natural or Relaxed:
i'm relaxed/texlaxed

Purpose in cutting back on heat:
i haven't used heat since late november early december 0f 2009, and it has done a world of good for my ends! i'm ready to hit some serious length goals, so i have to keep doing what's working!

Hair length in inches and location, i.c APL, SL:
i haven't measured very accurately but i am somewhere in the 20's (from the top of my head to the bottom length)
i'm currently in APL land.

Plan of action to maintain smooth hair minus heat:
IF i wear my hair out, it will either be rollerset or wrapped to get it flat and straight.
however, most of the time, i plan to keep on wearing my baggy buns with dc on the inside...it's been working!

Heat-free style suggestions: for body and bounce, the rollersets are the best!!!

I hope not to use these as i would like to make it at least a year without heat.

Just ckecking in...and bumping the thread

I'm still hanging in there. I've been finding more ways to handle my hair without heat. This is all new to me, being that I'm a former heat-addict. :mwahahafire: Until recently, I was doing braidouts. They were ok, but I was getting some breakage, and I didn't like that. So, for the past few days I've been doing flexi-rod rollersets. The first day, I co-washed, conditioned and set with perm rods. I'll flexi-rod it every night for 4 nights, then I'll start over again. It itches if I wait longer. No breakage so far, just shedding.

I'm going to follow the routine for a long time, then when my new growth is longer, I'll add braid-outs back in. :yep:

I never knew it could be this easy to not use a flat iron. Seriously. Coming from somebody who use to flat iron 2x a day (before I found LHCF) this is awesome!
