Summer 2010 No Heat Challenge June 21-Sept 22

flat-ironing my hair would be so easy to do, but I'm not gonna do it. Im going to try to maintain enough energy to flat twist it down for a twist out in the morning.

ok, i think im eight weeks post now(on Thursday) i juiced my dry hair up with some cantu leave in, especially my dry crown and braided it up.

^ur cornrows looks nice and neat, are they loosely braided or tight, seems loose! I was just about 2 come in here and say my flat iron is turned on but thanks to you, i just tucked it away. I cant wait til this weekend gets here, lol

it is actually braided tight. I have weird hair. find strands but dense and a lot of them so in a braid they look really fat, loose they look thin. I think I may try to keep up the braid out until I just get tired of it

ok 16 weeks post and counting down until the last bit of relaxer is off my ends! That's a long journey, but I'm up for it. I've been wearing anything that's wet, french braid, french roll, wet bun, two strand twist around my hairline, granny braids, half ponytails...anything! I've been good.. no heat! yea!

Guess I'll just beauguard my way into the challenge and join! :lachen:

Natural or Relaxed: Au Naturel and loving it!! Almost 3 months natural.

Purpose in cutting back on heat: I haven't used heat since 2 weeks prior to my BC and haven't used it since being natural. I want to gain as much retention and length as possible this summer. Also, I live in a hot, humid area in summer, and it's hustlin' backwards to try and fight the power and go straight! I am waiting until Fall to straighten so I can amaze everyone that my hair is almost back at my pre-BC APL by Fall! :fingerscrossed:

Hair length in inches and location, i.c APL, SL: 5-6" at top/ front layering to 7-7 & 1/2" in back. SL in back, neck length sides.

Plan of action to maintain smooth hair minus heat: I will be rocking mine curly on the daily. I cowash and leave full strength condish in and shingle (Teri's method) with my denman.

Heat-free style suggestions: You tell me, lol

I sweat a lot so i have to rebraid mine at night. its not a bother, takes me maybe 5 minutes. it lasts during the winter for a few days under a satin bonnet

Yea...I'm wondering the same thing...lol.

welcome aboard

I still haven't broke down and used heat. I took my two days out of a wet bun yesterday & today. Tomorrow I will wash, DC, and go right back up into a bun!

Welcome new challengers!!

^^^me either. I have been really lazy though so I probably wouldn't use heat anyway. lol

This newgrowth is really kicking it up a notch though. I'm not sure if its this recent heat wave or what, but my hair is growing in really thick.

I would like to join as well.....I dont know how I keep missing these challenges :wallbash:
I was planning on abstaining from heat anyway...

I thought I was gonna have to use a heat pass in order to get a trim but I found a natural hair stylist who trims without using heat!!!! I'm doing really well with this no heat thing. I feel like I'm accomplishing some goal that nobody else can see...

we are >>>here<<< i'm not only trying to avoide as much heat as possible, but I'm also trying to stretch until August for a relaxer while I think about transitioning. My newgrowth is very thick, but because i've been moisturizing so often to keep it laid down, its also very soft and feels rather good.

I'm just curious how everyone is wearing their hair? I have been "heatless" since Sept or Oct of 09 and pretty much wear the same styles: twist outs, braid outs, flexi rod sets, buns and updo's (only up to 8 weeks post). I always air dry and have found that if I gently comb my hair every 15-20 mins or so until dry, my hair is fairly straight (I'm relaxed). I then section it and apply oil then roll my hair with flexi rods. I get really nice curls and body but with this Tennessee humidity, the curls don't last and I end up with a cloud of hair on my head. I'm tired of twist outs and braid outs; I'm saving buns for next month (I don't manipulate my hair much leading up to my relaxer); it's too hot for weaves/wigs. I need another style. HELP!

Question: Does the use of a bonnet dryer count as a heat pass? I would like to rod my hair (perm rods), but it will take days to air dry. :nono: If it does count as heat, I'll pass on this style. :ohwell:

I've been doing braid outs so far and buns. I have considered a phony pony but. . . .do people still wear those? Im in NC so I know what you mean about the humidity. I have been playing with my hair crying to create funky and jazzy little protective styles by just pinning the hair up. Check youtube for "updo" styles.

Oh, and yes, using a bonnet is considered a heat pass, unless its used for DCing, i wouldn't dare eliminate heat from the DC process since many of us feel that its not a DC unless heat is applied. myself included.

I love creating creative updo styles but since my hair has gotten a little longer they've become more difficult to do and keep up unless a thousand hair pins or clips are involved. I guess I need more practice at this length.

:lachen:@ the bolded! Yes, people still wear phony ponies and I may do that because I can baggy underneath! Perfect! HeChangedMyName, you are soooo smart!

I didn't realize I couldn't use a bonnet dryer with rollersets. Luckily I haven't done it yet so I haven't used up any heat passes. I'm using a phony pony actually I wrap a piece of weave weft around my own ponytail. I then twist the ponytail around to make a bun. I don't use a pre-made pony because my hair is thin & they have too much hair making them look really fake on me.

I also didn't realize the bonnet dryer wasn't allowed. :ohwell: That's all I use to dry my hair. I've never really tried air drying since I need to get my hair done as quickly as possible without damaging it. I guess I am out then. :wallbash: Sorry ladies. Good luck!!

Awww, don't leave, you can still play with us. It is possible to do sets without heat. Check out my fotki I did some no heat sets in '08 and they turned out well

You know what? Since I am off of work this monday and I do my weekly wash on Sunday nights, I will let my twists air dry and see how they turn out the next day. If they are dry, then I know I can still do my washes at night and have dry hair the next morning in order to go to work. That has really been my concern, wet hair in the morning. I will give it a try. Thanks!!
