Just passing 4 months now and a lot of people say the had difficult parts in their transition. It kind of scared me a bit :perplexed because right now I've been pretty okay with my transition. Will I have to deal with a lot of craziness later? When did transitioning become difficult for you and why do you think it did?
 
Honesty, I'm not having any problems. Never have. I bunned the first three months and then went straight into cornrows, (April 01?) because i heard from the 3rd month up will be the hardest because of tangles. I didn't want to find out if that was true or not, so I just got cornrows.

I'm 7 months and 3 weeks post.
 
Detangling started becoming difficult around 6 and 7 months because I was wet bunning, frequently co-washing, and detangling once a week so my hair would get matted and take an hour to detangle. Now that I've switched up styles (braidouts EVERYDAY) detangling is 20 minutes so transitioning is smooth sailing again. I don't think everyone will hit a hard stage, it depends on ur reggie and styles.

ETA: I still only detangle once a week
 
The only problem I had with transitioning was staying away from scissors! I tried twist outs, had my hair braided and tried to use as many low manip. techniques as possible. Conditioner was my friend and kept my hair moist, but by month #9 I found scissors and one snip turned into a BC! I have no regrets though!
 
The first six months were weird, rather than hard. I was trying to figure out what to do with my hair other than flat iron it. Prior to my transition, I was the girl who got a blowout every other week. So this was new to me (laying off the heat).

After six months, it was a struggle between the STRONG 3-4 inches of new growth and the 6-8 inches of bone straight hair. After the one year mark, it's all downhill from there.

Hold on til the 12 month mark -- it's super easy then!
 
I transitioned for 11 months & 3 days. Months 9-11, all I obsessed about was wanting to chop! Sheer torture! Didn't make it to the 12 month mark! :)
 
I voted for 6-9 months. I had a lot of problems detangling and just basic styling issues. I couldn't get my hair to cooperate so I spent the winter months wearing wigs and half wigs to get over that stage. I'm almost 13 months post now and things have gotten a lot eaiser, I have more length and more natural hair in proportion to the relaxed ends so its a lot easier to style.
 
I had the most trouble just past the one year mark because half of my hair was curly and half was relaxed straight and I was wanting to do more than buns everyday. I had to learn "tricks" to avoid wasting time on hairstyles that never came out right. I had to find new products too. But once you discover those things its smooth sailing. Just learn how to do a great puff or bun and keep a super cute wig on hand because some styles will be a fail! Styling was my major issue. I detangle in the shower under running water so I have no problems there.
 
Since I am very impatient, 0-3 months.:look: I've never made it past that point in my previous transitions. :rolleyes:
 
I'm 1 year post on 26th July and i found the 6-9 month mark awful.....dryness set in and i'm still battling it to be honest. Right now detangling is a major issue and its making me have thoughts of relaxing.
The front of my hair grows slow and it looks like some of the relaxed ends have completely gone so styling my hair right now is a nightmare. I'm hoping this is just a hump and the next couple of months will reward me with easier styling.
At the moment i have 6 inches of new growth everywhere except the front portion where i only have 3 inches. All of which are still shorter than my relaxed hair.

Just to add - i'm going to the salon to get a Mizani Therasmooth treatment. If i like i will do that for a while.

Styling became difficult around the 9.5 month. I rollerset up until 9.5 months after that I started to notice broken hairs on my rollers. So I started to wear my hair pulled back with a claw clip and head bands. Due to the low manipulation it stopped any potential breakage. My transition was not hard. I only had problems with styling but I am style challenged so that was to be expected. I finally cut off the remaining relaxed ends after 1.5 years of transitioning.
 
9-12 months for me. I didn't make it to 11 months. I did better this time because the first time I went natural in 02 I transitioned from December 2001 to April 2002 so 4 months that time. I did 6 months better this time.
 
6-9 Deatangling and breakage was too much.But after do EVERYTHING is section and weekly protein treatments It was smooth sailing...Oh that and my natural hair getting longer made it easier to do styles:yep:
 
I almost broke down and cried during some detangling sessions. Then I was like are you kidding???? I will not let hair defeat me :lachen:. I'm 4a if that helps.
 
around 3 to 4 months was hardest. Just getting used to having so much hair on my hair that wasn't straight. This is when I almost relaxed. But around 6 months on forward, its been smoothing sailing.

Also my hair is short and I'm 4a/b texture. I have used heat throughout my transition. I also started doing steam treatments. Once my moisture level got better from the steam treatments my hair was easier to handle.
 
Honestly, my transition was pretty smooth. I thought it would be difficult, but surprisingly, it wasn't. :)
 
I haven't had any problems and I'm about two days shy of 15 months. I had fairly short hair in the back of my head the last time I relaxed (April, 2009) and I lost those relaxed ends early enough that I don't remember ever having them. Just lost them. I am all natural at the back of my head. I still have the relaxed ends at the front and the sides. Since that natural hair is not very curly, I think the texture differences is slight.

The hardest part of my transition has been seeing all the purty curls on other girls.
 
I did a 9 month transition, months 6-9 were killing me

The hardest part was the whole washing process, it just took too long to detangle. I never mastered handling newgrowth and relaxed hair. It was a disaster
 
This is a great spinoff. I have been transitioning DD 9 yrs old for 12 months now. It is starting to defeat me. Today I seriously thought about relaxing. I had to send her to camp with this horrible hairstyle because I didn't have enough time. I couldn't just pull it into a ponytail. It was so bad that she snuck a baseball cap in her bag. I couldn't blame her. I would have done the same thing if it were my head. If you ladys can give me any advice I would appreciate it. I don't want to relax again. I just don't know if I can make it.
 
The hardest part was the fifth month when I removed my Senegalese twists and had the worst tangles EVER and ended up having to cut some knots out. Ever since, my transition has gone smoothly. The only thing that's hard is resisting the chop and being afraid of heat messing up my curls.
 
ahamlet have you tried braiding her hair? I had to do a 2 year transition for my daughter after my grandmother took her to get a texturizer. I would just do corn rows in different styles and it would last for the week
 
The beginning was for me, because as soon as I started to feel my coils come back, I was ready to chop! I was supposedly going to transition for 2 yrs. That obviously did not happen. :lachen:
 
I'm only 3 months in (21 months to go, at least). I figure it will hit me about the six to nine month range, simply because right now it feels like a long stretch. I used to stretch my relaxers out 15-17 weeks. Once I hit the 18 week, it will feel like an actual transition.

So far, detangling is fine and styling is okay since I'm doing ponytails, braid outs, and buns.
 
Out of the 18 months of transitioning, I would have to say the 1 year mark. My new growth and relaxed ends were nearly the same length and detangling was a beast!
