So I finally decided to loc my hair

Hey LHCF fam...

I've always had a love for locs and after doing some extensive research on understanding locs, the different types of locs, products and maintenance, I've finally decided to take the leap and began my journey. I just thought that I've had every single thing in my hair from a relaxers to a jheri curl, but never had locs.

As most know, I did a BC in March 2010. I wore my natural for an entire year, mainly to gain growth because I didn't want to start my coils when my hair was too short (with my texture, it would have just kept unravelling).

I'm still at the very beginning...about 3-4 wks in and just thought I'd share my process with anyone interested.

I apologize but I lost the pics that I had of my initial loc install but here is where I'm at now:

My parts look huge in this pic and I'm thinking it's because of the angle. I actually have medium size partings. I opted for this sizing just because of how thin my hair is. I didn't want to have a higher risk of breakage with locs that are too small.

So far so good. I know that patience is key so off I go. I'll be back with another update in a month or so.

All comments/feedback is welcome. Sorry for all the pics....

Beautiful!! Did you start them yourself? I've been thinking about locking my son's hair. He normally wears twists, but I prefer the look of locs that begin with comb coils or palm roll method. I haven't mastered doing either on his mbl hair.

Sorry for the ramble, but if you have any sites to recommend hook a sista up! lol

Yes I did. I actually used the comb twist method. I learned alot from this person:

if you have some time, please watch his tutorials. He has a wealth of knowledge when it come to locs and maintenance. I love him.

Congrats! I can't wait to see your progress!
I'm almost two years in and although I have "down" days I'm glad I made this decision!

Can you really tell a difference on mature locs of how they started them? Why did you opt for combcoils as opposed to other methods? Lovely coils and good luck on your new journey!

Congratulations! They look great! I'm debating on if or when I may decide to loc as well. Keep us updated!

Congrats! I had locs for a while and still think about getting them again. They are so easy to take care of and get better looking every day I really miss mine

Looking good. I've had three sets of locks - all were started with braids. I had them for a total of ten years and I feel like I'm done but if I change my mind and go back in I'll go with sisterlocks. Enjoy the journey.

I will probably be stalking you when I run into stumbles in the road. Like the lumps and kink thingy. I've hears several explanations and one was really good. The lady provided in depth information as to how the locs form and draws up. Once I understood that, I knew to embrace the lumps and kinks as they will iron out later as long as your cultivating you locs.

From what I see no. I think that's only noticeable during the beginning stages. I opted for the comb coils just because I knew how easy it was for me to do single strand twist or finger coils... my hair just automatically form nice spirals. When I tried the two strand twist, my hair just seperates. Free form is out of the question. Braids..hmm, I debated with this but my hair unravels in braids. At least with the comb coils or single strand twist my hair wraps around itself easier.

I sure will. I have to have someone to talk to if I get fustrated...

Yes, I hear the maintenance is fairly easy as long as you develop a method. I find that when retwisting/palm rolling the locs... I'm down to about 50 minutes if I don't stop in the process.

I absolutely adore sister locs, but I was too afraid to get them due to my hair being thin and how tiny they are.

Nice! My mom has a similar texture and it took her hair close to a year to completely loc. She made sure she kept it twisted when her hair would grow out out would start unraveling. Can't wait too see your progress.

I would love to see pics of your mom's hair... especially any during her journey to mature....

Keep us updated, I'm thinking about getting locs myself.

Yay or nay ladies:

Haven't started locs just yet, would like to remedy my dandruff situation first and maybe even cut off some of my hair and start from scratch. But what say you? Would it be a good look for me, judging from these finger coils? Go easy on me please :D.
