Sleeping on a Silk Pillowcase and Nothing Else

Many LHCF women do several things to protect their hair at night and prevent dryness.

Some wrap their hair, others wear bonnets, others plait it, and others sleep on satin or silk pillowcases as well.

Do you think that just sleeping on a silk pillowcase and doing nothing else is enough?

Or should I do something in addition to this? I want to sleep with my hair free.

Depends on how long your hair is. I'd say any longer than SL you probably want to pin it up, but that's just me. I do the high ponytail with pincurls, but you can experience some ponytail holder damge with that. The pillow case helps IMO

I'm between APL and BSL and for me that would never work. My hair has to either be braided, banded or in a pony tail otherwise it is a tangled mess in the mornings which requires far too much time to make presentable. I've also found that if I don't restrain my ends in some way they become too dry and require extra moisturization. Still, you can always try it for a night and see how it works for you. My problems may well stem from the fact that I am a wild sleeper and often wake up with my head below the covers or off the pillow entirely. Best of luck to you.

i've been sleeping on a satin pillowcase for years. my hair is between BSL and MBL so i twist it up and clip it on the top of my head so the ends don't touch anything.

^^^ I'm not APL yet but I do the samething. I pull off bonnets and scarves in my sleep and since I can't sleep without a pillow this is my only option.

I need to get a satin pillow case. I usually just braid my hair at night and put it up but occasionally I don't.

All I use is satin sheets and a satin pillowcase. I can't get down with head coverings anymore....:nono:

I have only been sleeping on my satin pillow case lately. I may start back wearing my scarf. My hair is always in flat twist and tucked in.

I've been doing this lately. I haven't actually bought a satin/silk pillowcase yet cause I'm el cheapo :look: but I just lay my large scarf over my pillow. It works fine and keeps the tension off my poor lil weak edges.

I've been wearing a 'satin' bonnet and a satin pillowcase since I started my hhj but I'm worried that the bonnet isn't doing any favours for my edges. I've considered only using the pillowcase too but I'm not sure that would be enough protection, IDK...

The main drawback to doing just the pillowcase is that if your face is sensitive to your hair products it will be worse without a scarf.

I use both a satin scarf/bonnett and satin pillowcase just in case they come off during the night.

I basically use my satin pillowcase as a fall safe in case I forget to put my scarf or bonnet on after a night of partying. :look:

If I sleep with my hair out and just a pillow case, though--hello, H.A.M.! I almost always do at minimum four twists, usually more, to sleep with and then top with a silk scarf or bonnet. It helps to avoid the tangles.

At the moment though, I have extension braids in and I am relying on the satin pillowcase--scarf and bonnet over extension braids strikes me as unnecessary.

I do the silk/satin pillowcase-only. Sometimes I run my cool mist humidifier too.

When my hair is flatironed, I go back to a silk/satin scarf.

I only use a satin pillowcase because a scarf/bonnet never interested me. Still, my hair is never free, whether I am asleep or awake; it is always tucked and out of the way.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I slept with my hair completely free--that sounds lovely, actually :look:
But for now, a long satin scarf works fine for me!

man, that sounds so nice having un-restricted hair, fully framing my face as I drift off.... :lachen:

I have been using a Satin Pillowcase ONLY since 2002....I'm not fond of scarves and don't cover my hair at all unless I am DC overnight on dry hair.

I use a silk pillow case, but that's really insurance in case my scar rides up or slips up. I always wrap my hair up with a silk scarf.

ETA: I get my pillowcases from The Silk Company. They are not thin cheap ones either, they're pretty thick and very slippery and wash well.

I am 2" before WL and I often sleep with my hair in 2 Pocahontas braids, sometimes uncovered by my satin scarf, on a cotton pillowcase. Never satin.

I only use the pillow case. I hate wrapping my hair. I leave a shower capl on overnight if I'm deep conditioning though.

When I wash my hair I oil it WELL. I then tie it with a cotton scarf and cover it with a satin bonnet. I sleep on a cotton pillowcase because I keep sliping off the satin one. Most of the oil is absorbed by the cotton scarf so I wear this scarf to bed for the entire week. This keeps my hair well oiled but not feeling like an oil slick.

I've stopped wearing a bonnet and only use a silk or satin pillowcase. I finally realized that all these years, the bonnet or head scarf (no matter if the elastic is covered on not on the bonnet) was ruining my hairline.

Since I've stopped using a bonnet, my hairline is improving.

Those of you that use satin or silk pillowcases where do you get them ?
