Debating if I want to loc my hair. Do anyone in here have the sisterlocks? Arte they worth the price tag? Is it easier to learn how to tight them? Dreds.... Can you get them small? Would they weight to heavy? Should it be hard to start them at sl? So many questions...

There are a few sisterlocks wearers on here. You can do a search for the threads.

I used to wear them years ago. Only you can say if they are worth the investment. They will not save you money if you are currently a salon goer. They did however save me from having to "do" my own hair in between salon visits and I liked that freedom. Retightening is pretty simple once you take the training, as long as you stay on top of your retightening schedule. True sisterlocks are always small and the sizing really depend on your hair and whether or not the consultant follows standard sizing methods.
My sisterlock were never heavy. Starting at shoulder length will be more expensive and time consuming than shorter hair. Most consultants charge an additional fee for hair longer than 3 inches.

I had locs. They weren't heavy, but I cut them when they were a little past my shoulders so it wasn't like I had anything super long. It won't be hard to start at SL (depending on texture), it'll probably just take a little longer for all of the hair to loc.

And you can get them whatever size you want, but they thicken a little as they age. If you know you want to grow them really long I wouldn't get them very small because of the weight you're putting on the root.

i have regular sized locs, so i don't know if i'll be of much help. what ive heard about sisterlocks tho is that you have to care for them because they're so tiny and prone to interlocking with other locks, so you have to maintain the do. meaning you'll prob be in the salon up-keeping them a lot. that's one reason i didnt sisterlock cause i was scared lol. i saw a beautiful head in atl tho and it was so gorgeous. it looked like loose hair. but i like the low maintenance of my locks now so i know sisterlocking is something i could never keep up if i wanted them to be right.

you can get locks any size you want them. you just have to go to someone who knows what they're doing. and if you want your locks to lock fast, then you might be waiting a bit with sl hair because the longer the hair, most likely the longer the wait. i locked at chin length and it took about a month for them to start locking, but they were fully locked around the 3rd or so month.

There are sisterlocks alternatives. By starting with tiny braids for example, you can create microbraidlocks. The benefit of using a certified sisterlocks consultant is that they're trained to install and maintain locks using a standardized procedure. The methods they use are meticulous and labor intensive so that's why the price tag is high. You can also find other locticians who are just as knowledgable and meticulous about their work but they use other methods to create and maintain locs. If you don't know much about locs then you should do your research before you make a final decision. A good youtube reference "video locktician". She does both sisterlocks and conventional locks. You can learn a lot from her video channel and her website.

Most locs aren't exceptionally heavy for the first ten years and a lot of people don't last that long. However long time loc wearers either get used to the weight over time, or cut them back a bit if they get too heavy.

I have SisterLocks and I do Sisterlocks but i'll try to give honest unbiased answers.

  1. Yes, I have them, and have for almost 2 years.
  2. Yes they are a worthwhile investment, if the name is important
to you; BUT if you check around you'll see that the money involved varies GREATLY, that is another factor.
  3. No, it'snot easier to learn how to do a re-ti on Sisterlocks; honestly I can't think of anything simplier than palm-rolling/twisting. JMHO.
-- The Retightening process can be simple, once you get the hang of it; my biggest headache with it is the volume of loc's to be done. But that's just part of The Journey.
  4. Regading can Dred's be made small; that's a relative question (What's small). Heck my "smalls" are considered "micros" by others.
  5. Weight is also relative. Some folks don't mind; others do. Only you can determine when as far as weight goes. Enough is enough but that would be many many years into your Journey.
  6. Loc's can be started on any length hair.
I hope this helps.

I agree with everything the other ladies have mentioned...I'll also add...

IMO sisterlocs are worth the price to get them installed if you can afford it then go for it...

I have sisterlocs

Official sisterlocs are tightened using the SL tool...but you can use other methods and other tools....

Sisterlocs are small in general....

Sisterlocs do not get heavy...however hair weight is relative.

I started with my hair almost at BSL....so SL should be no problem.....

warning...longer locs take forever to go through the loc process and locs tend to shrink before they show length.

Anyone know if sisterlocs can cause thinning?. I have a friend with the most beautiful BSL sisterlocs. I recently saw her after a long while and noticed large spaces and what looks like thinning from traction alopecia along her hairline and through the crown of her head. The rest of her hair looks very full. I was shocked because her locs did not always look like this and I had always heard sisterlocs were very light and did not cause tension. I once considered them for myself but now I am afraid.

JazziLady!

I wonder if stress or medication was a factor in her hair thinning. The crown and edges are the first to show signs of stress/medication thinning.

Also, some people have problems when the locs are excessively maintained.

To the OP:

I'm not a certified loctician and I don't claim to be. I started both my hubby's and my son's locs last year. My lil guy had about 3" of hair and hubby's hair was SL/CBL. I started them both using the interlatching method b/c they both rinse/wash their hair often. I also maintain by interlactching using a crochet hook.

My son's are smaller -- slightly larger than sisterlocks. I believe his locced faster than hubby's b/c of his texture (very fine strands, kinky). His also appear to show growth more.

Hubby's are varied in size b/c some of his hair was already loccing naturally when we started due to him leaving in TSTs. Many of his are the size of a pinky finger and some are the size of an index finger or thumb. His hair is more coarse (thicker strands) and curly (what some would call 3b/3c). His also don't readily show length.

GL with your decision! :) I plan to loc after I'm finished playing with my loose hair.

How long were your locs after install on bsl hair?

I personally don't think sisterlocks are worth the money. I started my locs with very small two stand twists, but I ended up combining them later to make them bigger because it was taking too long to re-tighten my roots. You could also start a small set with mini braids.

I started with BSL/MBL hair that shrunk to chin/shoulder length over the course of a few months, then grew back to BSL. At that length they became cumbersome and took forever to dry so I took them down after 2.5 yrs.

I paid $80 for the initial twists, them did all the maintenance myself. I was spending about $10/month on my hair.
