Silicone Free Regimen

Oh my goodness. Thank you for starting this thread. My hair is trying to tell me that it doesn't like something. But I'm not sure if it's co-washing or cones. So I want to try to go cone free to see how that works. But unfortunately, EVERYTHING that I own has cones; with the exception of Nexxus, I think.

Well, some cones you need to clarify out. You can't just use a regular shampoo. And I try not to use shampoo very often, no more than every two weeks. And I would rather have to clarify only once per month. Soo, in order for me to do that, I may need to tone down the cones.

I'm pretty much silicone free, with the exception of one product that has a water soluable silicone further down on the ingredients list.

I'm silicone free because my hair doesn't like sulfate shampoos that don't contain silicones (at all--it gets dry and frizzy for two weeks). So in order for me not to use sulfate shampoos, I can't use products that require sulfates to remove them. There are other products my hair doesn't like either, like propylene glycol or wheat protein high on the ingredients list.

I don't use all natural products though--about half and half.

I've developed one and I am much happier. I used to use silocnes for detangling, and I also used serums on my ends when I wore my hair down. I was doing everything right, but my ends were chipping (despite regular trimming/dusting) and my hair felt dry. I was also clarifying regularly. I think that, while silicones do make my hair nice and slippery, in the end, they were blocking the effects of some of the other good things I was putting on my hair, like my moisturizers and oils. I haven't used silicones in a few months and I am happier with my hair. My ends don't chip off anymore for no reason, my hair feels softer and more moisturized and I have pared down my products considerably, because it seems like 'cones are hard to avoid. I now use Kenra and some Nexxus products exclusively along with Giovanni Direct. Giving up 'cones has helped my hair perform better and I am better able to assess a problem. When I used 'cones, if my hair was breaking, I never knew if it was because of 'cones or some other problem. There is a lot less guesswork in my regimen with a pared down product list and no silicones coating my hair and drying it out.

Yeah, see I'm not really sure if cones or co-washing is drying my hair out. But somethings happening. Like, today was my first time flat ironing my hair since July. Right after that, I starting co-washing 2-3 times per week and using less shampoo. But now my hair is dull looking, has less bounce, and it feels hard. My hair NEVER felt like that after flat ironing. People always thought I had just come in from the salon. And before, I was mostly using Nexxus products. But since I've joined this site, I've bought just about everything that people recommended. So, it's probably all the cones and the fact that I'm using the cones more often that has my hair feeling like this.

ETA: I'm going to clean out my closet and start selling stuff. Back to my Nexxus and Kenra here I come. No, that was my problem in the first place. See how fast I wanted to try Kenra since you said it worked well for you. I have a problem!!! I think I'll try the Nexxus Phyto Organics line first.

 Too funny...I think that the cure to PJism is finding those products that work for you every time. Kenra and Nexxus never let me down, and I am never trying anything else. Although it is so easy to get sucked into trying new stuff, especially if someone raves about it! I've sold and given away a good deal, and I am happy to be free! :)

I only use a silicone product when I flat iron my hair.

that is not often - maybe every 6 months.

other wise I use natural and organic products.
