Rollersetting- is this supposed to happen?

So, I'm under the dryer rollersetting my hair and on LHCF instead of studying..:look: and just thought:

When you roller set your hair, the hair on the outside of the roller gets dry first.. does that mean the hair already 100% dry is getting heat damage?

I'm always looking for ways to cut out things in my reggie that could potentially dry out my hair. I got up to check and the hair on the height of the roller is completely dry while the "insides" are still wet. Does it make sense for me to stay under here? Am I drying out my hair??

When I go to the salon, I never think of this bc I'm usually done in 45 min. Right now I'm under my Lazey Dazy and it takes me an hour and a half to dry my shoulder length hair. And the only reason it takes me this long is because the "insides" are still not dry. Also, my perimeter is also 100% dry..

Can ya'll help me w this?

I thought the rollers should be large enough so the hair doesn't overlap. that eliminates the problem

i have been thinking this same thing for the past few days because i'm considering going back to rollersetting...but i'm afraid of this. i feel as though the outsides will get too much heat on them. :(

but what about people with longer hair that overlaps?

:ohwell:

i know some folks on this board seem to do it with apl hair and their hair still seems healthy. not sure what they're putting on it

That's the other thing, I didn't put any heat protectant because.. well.. I dunno I never do.. should I?

My hair isnt even that long! I'm in the 1 1/2 inch grey rollers.. You may be right though.. I am extremely cheap and don't want to buy a new set of rollers, but I will try what youre saying.. but i know there are ppl who's hair does overlap

I also don't want to airdry.. 8 hours?? in Magnetic rollers?? no.

I was thinking it was the lazy dazy...maybe u need a new dryer..
OT:RedBee..u got a eye shaped like keisha cole....keisha...dat u???????lol

Last thing, I think it is drying out my perimeter bc my edges and nape are always crunchy after the rollerset.. maybe I need to get a new bonnet??

Oh.. I just saw this.. Anyone have suggestions on better hard bonnets? I got this bonnet maybe.. 5 years ago? Maybe longer?

NOT the pibbs bc.. well.. not in this economy..

Same thing that happens to me and I wonder about hair thats already dry being under more heat for another 30-1hr also.

I dry my hair just hanging down straight, it takes like 20-45 min depending on the heat I use (I have a cheap $40 dryer from kmart), but the ends get frizzy, and the hair looks like big like a blowdry....after that I pincurl and its good.

Trying to find the best way also though. :ohwell:....

Thinking about just rolling the very ends of hair--but I think the rest of the hair might be poofy...

Maybe a ponytail rollerst, dry for about an hour (untill most of its dry) then airdry the rest?

Hey, to the bold- I'm no expert, but my hair does the same thing. I would tell you that you have porous ends. Do they dry faster than the roots?
I would say don't dry your hair that way. put your ends in rollers. Not a full rollerset, but let your hair ahng stright down and roll the ends up on a roller.

That helps me when I'm in a rush, try it...

how long are you talking?
i've been rollersetting each week for 3 years. my hair is bsl, and healthier since I started roller setting. but i use rollers large enough that my hair doesn't wrap around them twice. just a bit to keep the ends secure

anyway, hope that helps

What size are you using? I have the 1 1/2 inch ones and mine DEF overlap. Even at the salon it overlaps. Now, I'm not saying youre wrong, I'm saying that if you would have overlapped and sat under the dryer, you think those portions of your hair would have dried out?

Do you use a heat protectant?

Yep they do dry way faster then then the roots, porous hair and def. porous ends :nono:---

Thankyou so much!!!! (Im gonna PM you one question I have so I dont take away from your original post)

I don't think it's bad, at least it's better than the blow drying and tugging on the hair to dry it. I still blow dry too, but even though the rollerset may dry certain parts faster it is still a bit of a better way to dry your hair because your not using a pic attachment, concentrator nozzle etc. I still do both but I think the rollerset heat my not be as harsh.

Darnit why didn't I get that pibbs when lhcf had that deal? darnit!

i'm not sure who this question is for but,

when i used smaller rollers at the start of my journey, and they overlapped, the overlapping hair would dry first, and the hair underneath it would still be wet. so then i'd have to sit under the dryer longer- which means the hair on the outside got unnecessary heat. if that makes sense :ohwell:

so i started using larger rollers (3.5") so the hair doesn't wrap around the roller twice. they use a bigger size on me at the salon, i just can't find those in the store.

everything dries evenly, and i'm done in 30 min. :yep:

i use a little la bomba leave in conditioner or lacio lacio

The ends get dry faster than the roots too. Scary thought, huh?

BUT... it's indirect heat and you are using a leave-in/heat protectant. It's also LOW heat... I mean, you are sitting under it. It's not burning you, so it's definitely not scorching your hair. Your hair is getting as dry/damaged as your skin is... not much.

We can't escape every little tiny bit of damage... I mean, you're not going to stop combing, fingercombing or handling your hair next? The only people with 100% undamaged hair are still in the womb

I'm sure you'll have no problem :)

I use them grey and the black rollers for my rollersets, its time for me to upgrade my dryer, lol.:lachen: Your hair is pretty girl, its probly just the dryer, mines do that too, which is why i'm gone to upgrade.

I've had the same thoughts. But look at it this way: Macherieamour has been rollersetting for YEARS and she has some of the healthiest and most beautiful hair :yep:

Sorry, it was for you.

Yea, that makes sense and that's basically what I'm going thru now.
is la Bomba a heat protectant? (I'll google) I only used some spray leave-in (Infusium23) and a tiny bit of NTM. 30 min!? I'm SO JEAL.. hmm!! I'm def going to try this now.

Very true. But me and Macherieamour do not have the same hair at all. My hair is not as dry as hers. I can't use a round brush like she does w/o hearing snap crackle & pop.. She also has a pibbs, I believe.

Ive never seen her do a rollerset, what size are her rollers?

I have an Ionic Hair Dryer from Sally's it claims that the Ion's dry your hair from the inside out and that its better for the hair. You can check it out on Sally's website, its the Ion hard bonnet dryer.

yeah i thought of macheriemore's hair when i read this thread, because it was her video that made me consider rollersetting again.

i dont think i can find 3.5" rollers in my country lol far less a hair dryer that will accomodate it but i can look and see.

i think i'm gonna just try air-drying in big braids and then flat iron on a low heat or something :perplexed

ive seen people use cans, just make sure to file/sand the edges!!
a soda can is about 2.5". a soup can may be bigger
:lachen: but seriously...

I never sit under a dryer until my hair is completely dry. I rollerset weekly, and when drying, I use a combination of indirect heat and airdrying. After about 45 minutes of drying with my soft bonnet dryer, I airdry (sometimes overnight) until completely dry.

ooooh interesting

and you aren't frizzy when you're done? If i could do that, i could cut down my drying time to 15-20 min! how do you sleep comfortably in them?
