Rollersetting Hell

Okay.

I was SO inspired by two journals with fabulous rollersets in them that I decided to give it a whirl again.........

I followed Macherieamour's instructions and my technique was the best it's EVER been. My rows were straight, my edges smooth, used end papers, yada, yada, yada.....

Well I take the rollers out this morning and I'm pleased. Get outside and it's misty. By the time I get to work I look a h.a.m.

Can a sista win? I currently use Nacidit products and I like them (minus the parabens). My curls were nice, firm and bouncy when I left home. Now I'm walking around looking like a wet chicken.

What products should I be using to prevent this from happening? My braidouts/twistouts yield the same result and I start looking like the Lion King when it rains or it's too humid.

I think I'm a 4b.

Help!

I dont rollerset...but my braidouts had a bad habit of getting VERY poofy when it was humid or rained, until I started using serum/hair polisher.I would make sure to apply serum on my wet hair after my leave-in and more after I took my hair down. No more poofy hair for me!

Hmmm...it's most likely just the weather. Did you use a leave in? Did you dry under a hooded dryer?

Honestly, this morning it was so foggy and humid out that my hair has expanded. Sometimes that's how it goes :ohwell: .

At least you can do a perfect rollerset now!

Delta, I think you just needed some hairspray.

This same thing happened to me Tuesday morning. Frizzy head but I forgot to use hairspray.

I used a soft bonnet dryer..
So am I supposed to just accept the Lion look whenever it rains?

I used NTM serum on my wet hair. Is there something better I should be using?

I haven't used hairspray since middle school. I thought it was bad for your hair.

By misty, I'm guessing you mean a very fine drizzle that doesn't call for an umbrella. If your hair was not covered while you were out and about in the misty weather, there's not much that would have saved your fresh rollerset. Best thing to do in this case is to wear a hat, bunning your hair underneath it until you reach your destination, or have some pins and clips handy in case you need to put your hair up later.

I agree with this. When its misty outside like that, I have my umbrella up (even if passersby are snickering!) or i wear a hat and make certain my hair is tucked under. That type of inclement weather is great for destroying hairdo's..... and im honestly not sure there is any hair product that can prevent this.

When the weather is not "hair friendly", I put on a cute silk scarf to keep my hair covered until i get wherever i am going. I make it look classy (not the aunt jemima look) by tying it loosely toward the back. It looks good with a nice coat. Its the only way my rollersets stay ;)

My mom hair does this and the only time it held up was when I used Sedal Hydraloe as her leave-in w/a little Jojoba oil (or whatever oil I'm feeling that day. I actually thought it would be too heavy on her naturally thin hair but it actually worked excellent. Her curls loosened a little but didn't completely go BANG! w/o a curl in sight.

More products, huh? So far I LOVE Dominican products....... Guess I gotta go get some of that Sedal Hydraloe.:D
Dumb question: why do I feel like adding oil to my already oily hair will make me look greasy???

Its the mist. My hair does this also. It is amazing how it only happens when I consider wearing my hair down.

When it's misty/rainy outside, I know that I'll need to cover my head. This weather is a disaster to my hair. I usually keep it pincurled or bunned until I reach work. When I walk in the door with my silk scarf, I'm told I'm bearing a "Babuska":) Even if you wear a bun for the day, your curls will return after pincurling/rolling, etc.

Well we wouldn't want that  , if ya don't need oil I wouldn't add any. You can also do as the other ladies have advised and keep it pincurled or in a bun until you reach your destination.

The same thing happened to me today. I spent this morning flat ironing and used my carusos for some body and I was cute but I got outside and it was very foggy and humid and raining which completely destroyed my hair and turned it into a frizzy mess. This always happens to me when it rains or even looks like it will rain. Even though i always have an umbrella the humidity kills it anyway. I haven't found a solution except maybe wrapping my hair up while I'm outside but thats too much to do in between each of my classes. I just have to do it over i guess.

Serums will prevent the frizz, but the falling is inevitable because of the moisture. A 3-type head might do well in mist by getting curlier, but if you're a 4-type, you're gonna fall and go frizzy in humidity.

Be sure you're using a good setting lotion, like Lottabody, to hold your curls under normal conditions.

I rollerset exclusively. When it's raining or humid or even might become either outside, I wear my hair back in a bun or pony--a braidout might hold too, if it's not too gross out. I don't even bother trying to rock it down, because it's absolutely pointless. This comes from about 15 years of wearing nothing but rollersets.

I use it too! I just started using DOVE spray (not spritz).
It rained up sumthin yesterday & my hair held up!!!!

And I didn't use alot either. Had body & bounce too.

When I don't use spary, my head looks like I did NOTHING to it.

ITA. On misty days, I never expose my hair to the elements. I wear a satin scarf, a hood over that and use an umbrella. If I'm going to wear a braidout, for example, I wear my braids/plaits to my destination and take them down in the restroom.

ITA also about the curls returning after pincurling, even if you were wearing a bun. Our hair is amazing. :yep:

So Blu217, have you tried hairspray on your rollersets as Dlewis mentioned? I'm wondering if that's what I've been missing...:scratchch

I confirm that it is not a matter of products. Even with my hair which is "easy" to rollerset, I need to pay attention to cover it when is is misty outside.
Using the hairspray is a possibility, but the real solution is to cover your head with a scarf. An umbrella is not sufficient because there is an impact of the prevailing humidity.

Hairspray isn't for me--can't stand the stuff! Plus I never felt my hair held with spray the way it would on any other day, so I don't bother. I also like KNOWING FOR SURE on a nasty day that I'll look the same at the office as I did when I left home, so I put it up or pull back. But it sounds like it's working for the ladies who are using it.

Well, it sounds like that means always having good silk or satin scarves on hand. I really love my extra-large sized silk scarf I bought a year or so ago from www.tenderheaded.com

This happens to me too. I have given up looking for curls. The weather doesn't even have to be bad with me. I guess because I do not like gels and hair sprays. I have learn't to just enjoy the curls when I do have them

When it's wet out I break out the silicones like Silken Seal, Fantasia IC, Tresemme or Friz Ease. Yet Silken Seal if my favorite. I also notice a little seal of oil keeps the frizz away on wet days.

I used to use an old fashioned plastic rain cap that you can buy at Walmart. I saw a lady entering my building at work with one on. I need to buy another one.
