The price increases is one thing, getting it sprung on you at the register would have me pissed.

Reniece's salon can get away with the increase because their wait list is crazy and that just is what it is. But they should have sent an email or posted it in the salon well in advance. People don't like surprises when it comes to spending money.
 
Not trying to be funny or anything but what is so special about reneice and her method? I know nothing about her.

I'm just honestly trying to wrap my head around this whole concept , waiting list a year long, prices doubling, etc.

Noooo I didn't mean to sound messy :lol: I only meant that she was one of the first to openly incorporate the techniques that forums, blogs, and social media made popular which caused her to become well known in the hair world. That's what I meant when I said she claimed the spot first :lol:

A good stylist WILL tell you to deep condition, trim dead hair, install weaves that promote growth, not fry your hair straight etc. so it is entirely possible find a stylist locally that does exactly what she does.

For special days I'd dump the contents of my wallet in her cash register too. Other than that I won't make her daily living and retirement plan better than mine!!!
 
I wish she would give classes about her techniques for us poorer folk. I would definitely shell out money for that. But she is a fabulous hair stylist and if I was financially better off and could get an appointment, I'd be a client.
 
Exploitative? I been to Rockville once in 2000. It smelled Like money. . Is the area still like this? If so, you gotta pay to play or go to Neicey down on the Block and have her scorch Your skull in her kitchen with no air and two kids on her hip While she hollering at her man about the child support. God forgive me.

It probably includes all of that. They need to wash and condition your hair before they try to flat iron it. Generally. I think I'm one of the few clients who usually goes in with my hair already washed and blow dried, because it would take too long otherwise. Sometimes she will wash and condition again even if I've already washed it if I ran out of time and couldn't detangle fully. In which case it often means she doesn't have time to flat iron. I go in for a hair session, not exactly a specific service.

I don't know what it will be now with the price increase, but I pay like $70 or $80 when I go, which may or may not include a wash and condition, but which always includes blow drying, flat ironing (unless it was too tangled when I arrived), and trimming. I honestly considered it a steal. :look: Reniece is my stylist, and I feel pretty confident in saying she is at the top of her field. When I go, she usually spends around 2 hours working with my hair. It's not the kind of place, either, where she's doing a bunch of heads at a time. Pretty much that whole 2 hours she's working with my hair alone, unless I'm under the dryer for a dc. What's that, like $40/hour? Add to that the fact rent has to be taken out of that for her place of business, and she's self-employed so health insurance and retirement must come out of that, I figure that like $30/hour before taxes. I figured she must actually be giving me a deal because how could she not earn more than that for her skills?

My hair is not easy. I don't know how long she or the other stylists spend with their clients in general, but I can say Reniece takes her time with my hair. She is the only, I repeat, only stylist I have ever been to that really does so. I've been brutalized by stylists so much I am scared to go to anyone other than her. I've never been to another stylist like her, who keeps notes on the condition of my hair over time, and actually talks about how she was looking at her notes from earlier. Like, who does that? As far as I'm concerned, she's a master craftsman and her work should be priced accordingly. Now, I might not always be able to afford it, but I think $100 2 hours of her time is worth it, maybe a bit less for her junior stylists I guess (though they may be the bomb too). I don't go more than like 3 times a year, though. I go more for the complete detangling and proper trim, and the flat iron is a nice bonus.

The big jump is a lot, but she hasn't raised my rate at least for like 2 or 3 years. I understand being upset by a 50% increase, though. I'ma still pay it though.

I know she's been thinking about doing this and mentioned it to me and if she could use my head in a demo. That was a while ago, though, so I wonder if she's still planning on it or if she just hasn't had time or something.

I hope to God she does. Her flat ironing technique is gorgeous. I'm excellent when it comes to my hair health, but know absolutely nothing about styling which is the main reason I get braids.

Neither. Old school hair dresser, lol. She was about 60 and only did wash, deep condition, and roller set or flat iron. No fancy updo, no frozen hairstyles, etc. She had her lane and she stayed in it, lol. But damn near everyone at my college went to her. She was in downtown ATL. The good ole days!

Now that I'm looking at the salon flyer/price list, I think $65 was a special. A blow out is $55 - $75 and a conditioning treatment is $15+. My service should have been $70 - $90 with no trim.

I still recall the photos from when Reniece first started doing your hair and gave your a proper trim. It was nothing short of amazing! If I lived close to MD, I'd use Reniece too.

Reniece seems to offer the kind of service where it's safe to fall asleep in her chair and not wake up scalped or with damaged hair. I have yet to meet a stylist who keeps notes on the condition of hair. The only notes I ever saw were for my loyal customer discount with my very first stylist who I had used from age 13. Finding a great stylist is difficult so once you do find someone, hold on to them.

I haven't read, but I thought the costs of the Junior Stylist was lower just because they had less experience...you were getting a bargain so to speak and they were getting experience. Now they have experience I assume they will charge what the others charge. That said...I've never gone there for a flat iron just weave up/weave down and style. LOL. Also, none of the Junior Stylist have ever done my hair.

At 3 pages, I'm sure this is going to be some interesting reading.

Sounds like the lady I used to go to. She was by the 5 Points MARTA station and had a dude that worked there with her... they closed up shop a long time ago though :(
 
I can't imagine paying this kind of money with YouTube on the scene. There's girls on YT flat ironing their hair with top quality results and complete reversion. I'm in the process of mastering my technique for MY hair from what I learned on the tube.

....shoot you can learn ANYTHING on YT. I just made my first wig ever from watching YT!

And as a client for nearly 2 years, I havent seen those kinds of increases at all. I really do think its the Junior Stylist promotion or bump. I don't think they are "trying to push out old clients", but hey I could be wrong. I do admit to some bias...my hair has never been happier.

I also agree about paying for flatirons...getting it done while Im there is one thing, driving to pay 100+ tip for it is something else. LOL.
