Relaxed Hair

I am new to this site. I currently wear braids and I plan on taking them out this week because they have been making my hair a little thin at the hairline. I want to put in a relaxer, however I don't want my hair to break. I want long, healthy strong hair. Does anyone have any tips on how I can keep my soon to be relaxed hair healthy?

Use a reconstructor (Aphogee is popular among the ladies) after you relax your hair. Followed by a moisturising conditioner.

And use curl activator to soften your new growth.

There are loads of tips on the site. Try searching for post relaxing tips and tips for self relaxing.

I am not relaxed myself so unfortunately while I read most threads, I usually focus in on the natural ones.

After taking out the braids, definitely do a protein treatment followed by a moisurizing conditioner all in the same initial session. That will def. strengthen the hair and put back the moisture the protein sucks out.

For a good 2/3 weeks maybe, I'd do alot of deep conditioning with your favourite moisturizing conditioner. Leave it on for a good half hour or more. Some use heat some don't.

Scurl activator does help soften the hair and keep it soft as it air dries so you may want to try using that inbetween washes.

I think after those weeks of deep conditioning, check how your hair looks and feels. If you feel its softer, not dried out etc then pick a salon via a recommendation!!! and go for it.

After its relaxed do the same deep conditioning treatments. Starting with a protein then moisturizing one. Try to avoid strong heat to dry it. Rollarsetting is comparatively less damaging than blowdrying. Find a good leave in too. Oh , and try pre oil treatments!

Thanks for the tips! Do you recommend a specific type of moisturizing conditioner and pre oil type treatment?. I have used motions hair products in the past and they seemed to have work well with my hair.

Motions Moisture Plus is an excellent moisturizing conditioner. Their CPR and Oil Moisturizer conditioner (which are both protein, but CPR is the mild one) are also excellent conditioners..You can stick with those if you like..If you're interested in others, try doing a search there are tons of threads on conditioners and various other products..I'm sure you'll find it.

Also, there are few threads on products we've tried lately, you can check those as well..

Definitely check back on previous pages to read favourite conditioners of the board. There's tonnes listed. My current faves include: Loreal Unfrizz Smoothing Treatment, Mizani Moisturefuse, Motions Moisture Plus. I also like Aubrey Organics GPB for protein because its effective but doesn't dry out the hair at ALL. It leaves it very soft and moisturized. LOVE this stuff.

Pre-oil wise, I like extra virgin olive oil either alone or mixed with coconut oil. Just warm the combo and put on the last two thirds of the hair for a good hour if you can before shampooing.
