Rant: why can't hair dressers follow directions?

I have been to and observed many hairdressers in the area and none of them seem to follow the directions they do the following:
1.) When they do a touch up they relax the whole head
2.) They don't apply a neutralizer or they don't apply it properly.
3.) They comb the relaxer through your new growth
4.) They don't do strand test
5.) They use harsh relaxers
6.) They leave the relaxer on for too long
7.) Some hairdressers don't deep condition your hair unless requested and then you have to pay extra for it.
Every time I sit in the chair to get my hair pressed I see this happen often and it makes me cringe. I want to say something to them soo bad.

You are TOO right! I had a brief brain-fart this past weekend and thought I wanted to go back to relaxing my hair... until I thought about having to go to a stylist again! The more I thought about all the crazy, bass-ackward ish they do to their customers' hair, the more shook up I became, and I let that foolish idea go! I actually want to become a hair stylist myself, just so I can make legit money by actually taking care of women's hair instead of jacking it up!

There are hairdressers who think they know more about a customer's hair than the customer does. I think when it comes to black stylists, they use a one-size-fits all way of doing everyone's hair. Some don't seem to realize that their clients have different hair textures, lengths, and styling techniques. The hairdressers I've come across know how to style hair, but they don't know how to keep it healthy. I also think they don't keep up on the latest hair news or products either. They know about the latest styles, but they don't know much about the latest products and techniques. A lot of them don't even know what a roller set is or how to do one. JMO.

For the most part I can agree with what the ladies have said so far. I havent been to the salon and many years. Finally came to the realization that its a business and todays hairdresser is making budget. Thier products come out of thier overhead costs and that why they dont seem to use enough. The more services they can complete in a day, the more larger the profit margin. I'm not mad at that-we all have to earn a living. My hair care has to be my own responsiblity. If i want a style then I will go for just that. And will lay my own foundation for healthy hair at home.

I honestly don't think anything good comes of relaxers.. Too expensive, too much work...

They are trying to save time and $$$. Once you realize everything they do, or don't do, relates to time and $ all the crap they do makes sense.

If you really care, go to a chain beauty salon (JC Penny, Fantastic Sams) where they are required to follow some sort of protocol, and the products do not come out of the stylists' pocket. They usually only take home 50% of the service, but they never run out of anything and there is no incentive to be stingy or take shortcuts. They also have access to the appropriate appliances (cermamic flat irons, blow dryers, attachments, every comb and brush under the sun, plenty of rollers of all sizes) etc. I'm not saying chains are the solution to all your problems, there will still be plenty of ignorance. I once saw a lady at JCPenny put a relaxer on a woman's fine hair and walk away:eek: , but when that silliness ensues you can get those types of complaints put in with the management.

A lot of times they are in a hurry so they can get to the next person. the last time I was at the salon which was in Sept. The lady took out her blow dryer and I waslike," I just want my hair wrapped under the dryer and then flat ironed."

She was like,"Ohhh I was about to blow dry it."

I just hate going to the salon. It takes forever to get out of there. You ask for a trim and they think you want a hair cut.

Im seriously thinking after I get my hair corrected Im going to go back to relaxing my hair myself. I told myself I wouldnt lol but seriously there are not that many good hair stylist around here. Ripping through my newgrowth and then my hair falling out is not worth it.

I can do my own care myself. I just need to get my self relaxing technique down and then I wont ever have to go back to the salon and spend 60-80 dollars for a retouch.

And yeah im bringing my own relaxer in (ors-olive oil). The relaxers at the salon burn me and are too harsh. I dont care if they snub their nose when I bring it in either.

that is so true. I once asked a hair stylist yrs ago how I could get my hair healthy and all she said was,'Just make sure you have a moisturizing shampoo."

I was thinking,"thats it?."
Im really thankful for this board.

That's why I don't go to hair dressers.

exactly! no hair dressers for me, they just do what they want and that's a blatant disrespect especially after I'm telling you what I want done, and you still doing your own thing:mad: and I'm paying you so what's the problem, I just stay away from them and do my own thing, and it's working for me very well.

Ummm I just got really paranoid but I did not realize until reading this thread that they are NOT suppose to comb the relaxer through the new growth. My stylist always do this- what are the ramifications to my hair because of this? Urgh I had no idea they are not suppose to do that.

Hi csmoot,
Combing the relaxer through can weaken the hair strands, because of the pulling/stretching of the strands, potentially causing breakage. In addition, the comb can scratch the scalp.

Smoothing the new growth (with fingers or backside of comb) after relaxer has been applied is healthier for the hair than combing the relaxer through the hair.

HTH =)

Thank you Lion Queen for your response- I now have to tell my stylist to NOT do this. Lets see how this works out esp since we have a language barrier. :ohwell:

I only go to the hairdresser for special occasion styles. I had my hair done last month for a wedding and was horrified when I realized she was about to blowdry my hair without any sort of heat protectant. Because of this board, I felt empowered to request it, something I would not have done before. She gave me a quizzical look but then complied with my request.

She also did not comb my hair properly. She started at the root and worked her way down instead of detangling from the bottom up. Once again I left the chair promising never to go to a hairstylist again. I felt like months of progress was just being yanked out of my head. At this point, I think I am the only one who can treat my hair the way I want it to be treated.

This is a major issue for me. everytime I allow a stylist to relax my hair I observe how many times they apply the neutralizer. Im an experienced self relaxer. I did a test one day and I decided to do the same process my stylist does I used the same relaxer too with he help of my SO. I rinsed the relaxer out first than applies neutralizer the same number of times my stylist does whish is 2 to three times. When I was done I decided to apply my trusty Isoplus neutralizer with color indicator on the 4th wash and behold the damn thing was fuschia pink I still had perm in my hair. I washed it 4 more times almost used 1/2 a bottle the damn perm was still in my hair.

Ladies this shows me that none of use are being properly neutralized and thats the reason why our hair is thining out after a while is because of this. I either cary my own neutralizer of I relax myself and I trust myself more.

Have you tried letting the neutralizer sit on your hair for a while after lathering?
