Random Hair Thoughts/Thinking out loud

More ((HUGS)) to you, @fifi134

I feel so sad by how frustrated you are! Your hair doesn't look unsalvageable to me AT ALL!!

And I think you're on the right track with wanting to do twists or braids! Do them with your own hair - no added hair. And that will reduce manipulation and other damage from manipulating the hair often. You can also wash, DC, M&S and do treatments in the twists/braids. If you don't already, a simple weekly regi of washing and DCing with heat will go a long way - even if you do nothing else to your hair.

Ladies are probably tired of me but I can't sing the praises enough about finding the right Ayurveda combo for your hair! For a simple scalp oil, put 2-3 tablespoons of Amla and Bhringraj into an empty jar and then fill with your favorite oil (I like EVOO and/or Almond). Shake it up and let it sit under your sink for a week, shaking it up every few days or so. The longer it sits, the more potent it is. But you should be able to start using it after a week. Strain as you pour some into your applicator, refill the jar with oil and put it back under your sink. I like to add lavender and sweet orange EOs to the oil in the applicator. Of course peppermint EO would aid in stimulating the scalp if you want. You don't have to be heavy handed when you apply it to your scalp (I am, lol) but get into the habit of applying it regularly. I apply mine daily as a part of wrapping my hair up for bed. I find cornrows to be the most helpful when I'm treating my hair as the scalp is exposed and the rows make for easy scalp applications.

I was still breastfeeding when I started oiling my scalp with the oil and I don't recall having any major post-partum hair issues. I was always terrified it would happen though! I believe using these powders that have LONG been used to prevent "hair fall" was instrumental in keeping hair on my head.

GL to you! ((BIG HUG))

You have so much hair! Go and get you a nice cut! It will make you feel so much better, i promise you!
Thank you! I ended up trimming some more dead ends after this and then spent too much time on YT looking at hair cut videos lol. I just need to find a salon that will do it, but I'm getting more excited about doing so and the prospect of getting to the other side of this.

Thank you so much! I know I have a good foundation and should be thankful for that. It's just so strange bc I've never had this much of an issue with my natural hair or even my relaxed hair since I started taking care of it myself over 17 years ago!

I will try DC'ing with heat. I DC every week but not with heat, so maybe that will help. And I have an Indian store around me so I'll go check out what they have for Ayurvedic products. Your oil mix sounds easy enough for me to do. But I'm not kidding about my scalp sensitivity, I'm also allergic to peppermint oil lol. I'll try that and get back to y'all in a month, with hopefully, wonderful results.

Thank you ladies so much!

Unfortunately, I had a severe allergic reaction to this last month! I wanted to love it so bad, but my scalp was on fire and I had relaxer-type scabs. But thanks for the suggestion!
Oh no, that's unfortunate :nervous2:
Do you know which ingredients caused that issue? Oh, and you're welcome lol

Yes, I have the chart. But the dates don’t make sense to me. Summer Solstice is usually one day. How is it multiple days 17 -19 and then skips days, and is the Solstice again on the 22-23?
I think Anthony Morocco has stated before that his calendar is not based on the Western calendar so the dates don’t align like that. He uses stuff he learned from some Shamans & the lunar cycle. I don’t know, I just figure it can’t hurt nothing. Maybe his YouTube videos can explain it better.

I hope I'm not stepping out of boundaries but your nails reminds me of mine when I was reacting to formaldehyde allergies. I didn't know what it was so I kept using nail polish to cover it. This made it worse since most nail polish contain formaldehyde. Luckily I found a derm who knew what it was because his wife had the same issue. He placed an allergy patch on me and I reacted only to the formaldehyde section. I had to stop using nail polish for a while and pay close attention to product ingredients. For example, I developed a bald spot when I had Keratin treatment. Found out later that it contained formaldehyde. Luckily my hair grew back.

My nails are much better now. They don't separate from the nail bed as often. I even use nail polish sometimes but I make sure to buy those without formaldehyde. Luckily there are a lot more companies now that don't use formaldehyde in their nail polish. Get a dermatologist to do an allergy patch test. You may just find out what you are allergic to. Good luck.

@abioni you are not stepping out of bounds at all. Funny you should mention that, I haven't worn nail polish or gotten my nails done in YEARS. I will take up your suggestion to see a derm for an allergy patch test.

Darn, I forgot you mentioned formaldehyde even though I read this post several times. My only excuse is that I's tired boss :lachen:

I swear even using color treated shampoo hair dye just doesn’t last in my hair where it matters in the front. I can’t live in my wigs because the southern oven is on. Hair dye spray come to mama.

That’s why I bought some more hats!! lol and I’m sick of dye getting on my nails when I shampoo or style..

Thanks for your responses. In my research last year, I found one of their blog posts stating that Anthony bases his calendars on astrology and "other charts." However, I can't find anything that actually explains his method beyond that. In my opinion, it’s not a lunar chart at all, at least not according to Earth’s moon. The solstice can’t be on multiple days, nor can there be a full moon five days in a month. It makes no sense.

The only explanation I can come up with is that we’re reading the chart wrong. Maybe it’s saying that the best days in June to do root work are those dates, and during the full moon, and on the solstice. It could also just be including the dates of the full moon and solstice in the list but not specifying which dates they are. I'm going to email them and ask for clarification. If they don’t respond or give an answer that makes sense to me, I’ll just use the regular lunar calendar and cut during the waning gibbous. The Farmer’s Almanac also gives hair cutting dates.

Does anyone still follow the Morrocco Method for hair trimming? I was planning to dust on the summer solstice, but I can’t tell which day is the solstice on their lunar calendar. Anyone happen to know?
I use the calendar. I pretty much make my own calendar now that I’m a middle school science teacher. I monitor the moon phases. My last trim was months ago during a full moon. I posted the new calendar in the “Trim, dust, cut” thread.

@Theresamonet

I was gonna say too that I have used the Farmer's Almanac in the past.
I only did dusting/trims on solstice days when I did them. I felt like I couldn't go wrong cutting on a Solstice. So if I missed a season, then I waited for the next season Solstice to cut.

Thank you! I wasn’t able to find your lunar calendar for 2024. I only see the one you shared in Feb 2023. Can you please post the link to the new one?

I’m going to trim on the actual Summer Solstice (not Anthony’s mystery solstice. ) next month on the 20th. But I want to trial doing micro trims every month or every other month, so I am trying to figure out a good marker for those.

I’m reverse washing my hair tomorrow. I’ll rinse, condition, then lather a few times. This will avoid scalp buildup, ease detangling and give me a smoother blow dry.

I’m going to have to accept I may always be in a wig esp now as I see thinning and sparse areas bc of perimenopause. This hit me yesterday and it made me feel a lot. This may be cheeky and if you’re under 21 you close your eyes. Since I’m not married nor partnered even if someone came along the thought of such showing just makes me not want to even desire a man. I know all the cliche things but the truth is it matters. All these years of trying to have long hai and nothing. But I will count it all joy and be happy with the hair I do have.
